2020 Fair Grove Invitational - 7th March 2020, Fair Grove HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Fair Grove High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the inaugural Fair Grove Invitational, scheduled for March 7th, 2019. Our tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus. Because of the shorter tossup length, games will be untimed.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with a five point “power” awarded if the tossup is answered correctly before a predetermined point. No points will be deducted for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. If a question begins “pencil and paper ready”, teams will receive 10 seconds to answer.
  • Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Teams must use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.
Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

NAQT has assigned our event the IS-193A question set. As of this e-mail, the Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous in Moberly, as well as tournaments at Maryville and Viburnum, will also use this set. If you plan to attend our tournament, you will be unable to compete at these events. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

We anticipate our tournament serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Fair Grove High School is located at 132 N Main Street, in the northern part of the city. We are planning to have the booster club staff our lunch and concession stand, as there are limited lunch options in town.

The tournament is under the direction of Fair Grove High School Coach Michelle Wahlquist and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2020FairGrove. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Coach Wahlquist at WahlquistM@fgsmail.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2020 Fair Grove Invitational” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Fair Grove High School on March 7th.

We've hit our initial cap, but we are confident that we should be able to secure enough staff to allow a field expansion.

We have secured enough staff to allow a field expansion to 2428 teams and move all teams on the waitlist into the field. With a couple drops, we have room in our field for more teams.

With the addition of even more staff and interest from at least one other corner of the state, we have expanded the field to 32 teams. This will likely be our final expansion.

In addition to serving as a qualifier for NAQT's national tournaments, it appears that we will be Gold Certified by PACE, meaning that the top 20 percent of teams (6-7) will receive bids to their National Scholastic Championship June 6th and 7th at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois.

Our playoff teams are as follows:
  • Fair Grove, Gainesville A, Kickapoo A, Weaubleau A
  • Central A, Clever A, Kickapoo B, Rolla
Four small schools are among the eight teams in the two parallel pools. Games do not carry over from prelims.

Clean breaks in the playoff pools result in Kickapoo A and Rolla playing for the championship. Fair Grove has won the small school title by virtue of making it to the third place game against Central A.

After nine rounds of dominant performances, undefeated Kickapoo A and Rolla squared off in our one-game final, with the Chiefs holding on in the back-and-forth contest to win the tournament 335-315. Central A overwhelmed the hosts 395-230, claiming third while Fair Grove kept the small school plaque on campus. Fair Grove's Braden Booth was the top performer with 85.8 points per preliminary match.

My thanks go to our crew of enthusiastic staffers: Stephanie Hull and Jason Loy from the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, Phillip George and William Koch, Victoria Fowler from Bakersfield, Scott Walker from Clever, Eldon Haun from Richland, Lisa McCarthy from Rolla, Stacy Krenke from Stockton, Grant Brown, Jeff Davis, Kathy Gibson, Stephanie Goings, and Malu Hayes from Strafford, and Stacy Beckley, Leola Bryce, Jon Foster, Jennifer Harp, Amy Holland, Amy Johnson, Keri Kirby, Denise Kothenbeutel, Marilyn Meals, Devon Miller, Anna Ray, Jenna Scarletty and Michael VanCleave from Fair Grove, as well as members of the Fair Grove quiz bowl team and NHS for their efforts throughout the day. Thanks also go to the volunteers from the Fair Grove Boosters who staffed the concession stand throughout the day.

I also wish to extend immense gratitude to FGHS coach Michelle Wahlquist and FGMS coach Chanda Lemon for their assistance in the smooth operation of tournament central, as well as their willingness to host 121 of the region's brightest scholars on a warm Saturday. I also extend appreciation to principal Chris Stallings, activities director Christian Overstreet, and superintendent Mike Bell for their support of academic competition at Fair Grove R-X and for allowing us to host a wonderful event for teams across Southwest Missouri to attend. Between preparations for sectional basketball, a pancake breakfast, and even the haze from a purportedly controlled burn near the Arkansas line, we had quite the day at Fair Grove, but overall I hope it was a memorable and positive experience for all teams, one I hope we can continue in the future.

Best wishes to your teams as the season enters the home stretch, and in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
