Fort Osage Novice Tournament - April 9, 2016

Post by Lakeland Scholar Bowl »

Fort Osage High School is proud to host its 1st ever Novice tournament with a housewritten set, the FONS (Fort Osage Novice Set). This was a summer school collaborative set created by the Fort Osage Varsity/JV teams. This set is a 20 tossup/20 bonus, National-type set. The set is powermarked, so there is 15 points available for an early, correct buzz. To promote play for inexperienced players, there will be no “negs” for an incorrect early buzz. The set has a question breakdown as follows:

4/4 Science (includes the possibility of non-computational Math)
4/4 Literature
4/4 History/Social Studies
3/3 Fine Arts
3/3 Geography
2/2 Religion/Mythology
1/1 Current Events
1/1 Trash (pop culture, sports, etc.)

(Note: There are 2 extra tossups/bonus at the end of each round)

We will divide the field into preliminary pools that will each play a round robin in the morning, after which all teams will be rebracketed into playoff and consolation pools for the afternoon. After the playoffs, the top teams could play a one or two game championship final depending on playoff standings. All teams will be guaranteed approximately 9 matches throughout the day. Round 1 will begin by 9 AM and we anticipate finishing the afternoon rounds around 4:00 PM with the top couple of teams potentially playing one or two more matches after that. In order to provide the best experience and maximum playing time to all participants, teams are expected to play all of their scheduled matches. Please be sure that you fully understand the time frame before registering.

We will be limiting teams to a maximum of 6 players, so if you have more players, we encourage you to sign up more than one team. We will begin by limiting the field to 18 teams, but further expansion is possible. There are very few Novice tournaments available after November, so we would love to have you. This set is intended for Novice players, so these grade level requirements apply:

Grade Level requirements:
Freshmen: any Freshmen can play
Sophomores: No sophomore that has played at a PACE or NAQT tournament is eligible
Juniors: A junior can play if it is their first year in Scholar Bowl
Seniors: NO Seniors can play

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Fees:
Base fee (first team from each school): $60
Second or subsequent teams: $55
Travel discount (100 miles or more one way): -$10
Buzzer discount (must work for 8 players, limit 2 per school): -$5
Staffing discount (discretion of tournament director): TBD

To register, please e-mail me jmalecki@fortosage.net to reserve your spot.

Obviously, we would love to have as many Missouri schools as we can get. But, we know travel to the KC-area may be cost and time-prohibitive, especially for St Louis area schools and mid-Missouri (and it is the week before Districts, which was not the best date, but all that we could get). So, if any other Missouri schools (especially the STL area) would like to mirror this set, please let me know!

By this, do you specifically mean the national tournaments run by those organizations, or any tournament affiliated with PACE or using NAQT questions (which would eliminate most regular difficulty tournaments)?

Clarification to that: Any sophomore that played at the HSNCT, SSNCT, or PACE NSC National tournaments last spring is not eligible.

Thanks for confirming. That is what I thought you meant, since it matches the eligibility rules used at many other novice events, but I wanted to make sure that is clear to everyone else since my other possible interpretation would have been way too restrictive (and would have applied a limitation on first year sophomores that doesn't apply to first year juniors).

(Now that I see this wording, it's definitely helpful to explicitly list the tournaments that way, since "NAQT national tournament" could be interpreted as applying to MSNCT too, and you certainly wouldn't want to exclude high school students based on their earlier attendance at a middle school tournament.)
