MOQBA Fall Tournament - December 12, 2015 (Columbia College)

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the MOQBA Fall Tournament on December 12, 2015 at Columbia College in Columbia.

This will be a smaller tournament with a hard cap of 18 teams that will help us become familiar with hosting tournaments on the Columbia College campus, in preparation for the larger NAQT Missouri Qualifier that we intend to host at Columbia College on March 5, 2016. The MOQBA Fall Tournament will use the 2015 Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl (BISB) set written and edited by the Georgia Tech Academic Team. Games consist of 20 tossups with three part nonrebounding bonuses. We will be using 15 point powers and 5 point negs.

Check in on the morning of the tournament begins at 7:45 AM, with a brief introductory meeting around 8:30 before round 1 starts around 9:00. All teams will be guaranteed approximately 9-10 games, ending around 4:00 PM, with any necessary finals and tiebreakers to follow. This tournament has received platinum certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, meaning that the top 25% of the field will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship in Chicago on June 4-5, 2016.

Pricing
  • First team from a school: $65
  • Subsequent teams from a school: $60 each
  • Buzzer discount: $5 discount for each working buzzer system your school brings (limit 2). Each system must be fully functional for eight players to receive the discount.
  • Travel discount: $10 discount if your school travels at least 100 miles to the tournament (one-way, as determined by Google Maps)
Schools attending this tournament will be offered a discount on the entry fee for the NAQT Missouri Qualifier in March (pending NAQT approval of our bid to host that tournament). This discount will be $10 per school regardless of the number of teams registered for either tournament, and may not be applied to to the entry fees for the fall tournament.

Staff discounts:
All staffers will be needed throughout the day since all teams will be playing. Staffers will be provided lunch.
  • Scorekeeper discount: $15 discount for providing a competent scorekeeper.
  • Moderator discount: $25 discount for providing an experienced moderator. Moderators must be able to complete a 20 tossup/bonus game in 25-30 minutes to keep the tournament on schedule. We will reserve the right to choose our moderators.
  • For schools that provide staff, the minimum fee per team is $0.
Registration
To register, please complete this registration form. Registrations will be processed in the order they are received through this form, and will not be accepted via any other method. Please note that your registration is not official until you receive a confirmation email and your teams appear in the posted field list maintained below.

We hope to see you and your team in Columbia in December and wish you the best of luck as you compete this season. If you have any questions about the tournament, don't hesitate to ask at moqba@moqba.org.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill
MOQBA President and Fall Tournament director

The field has filled! We will not be expanding past 18 teams, so all future registrations will be placed on the waitlist to be admitted to the field if any of the registered teams drop.

Barring any last minute drops, the field above is confirmed. Registered coaches should have received two email updates within the last week. Looking forward to a great tournament on Saturday!

Hickman and Hannibal are currently playing the second game of an advantaged final. Hannibal had won the round 8 game 310-220, so Hannibal had the advantage in the final. Hickman won the first game of the advantaged final 360-220.

Rock Bridge finished 3-2, placing third.
We had a 3 way tie at 1-4 for fourth; all teams mutually agreed to break the tie on playoff points. 4th place was Hallsville A with 1140 points, 5th place was Centralia A with 880 points, and 6th place was Helias A with 875 points.

Stats for all but this last game are available at http://ft.moqba.org

Great tournament, Hickman and Hannibal are both really good teams, congratulations to both. This tournament really highlighted some communication issues for our Rock Bridge team. Hopefully by the next tournament (Tiger Bowl?) we can iron those out.

Thank you Nathan! Congrats to all teams and I want to thank the entire staff for their hard work as well. I learned a lot about myself as a player today, considering two of our players were taking the ACT (which is apparently more important :)) overall it was a wonderful tournament! Will combined stats be put up soon?

Thank you once again to all coaches, students, and spectators for attending the 2015 MOQBA Fall Tournament! I hope that you enjoyed participating in the tournament as much as I enjoyed directing it!

After round 9, Hannibal was undefeated and Hickman had one loss (310-220 vs. Hannibal), beginning an advantaged final with Hannibal holding the advantage. Hickman won the first game 360-220 to force a second game. Coming down to the last bonus, Hickman held on to win the second game 325-315 to be declared the champion of the 2015 MOQBA Fall Tournament! Rock Bridge finished in third place with a 3-2 playoff record. Hallsville A, Centralia A, and Helias A were tied at 1-4 for fourth place; instead of playing two rounds of tiebreaker matches for the final plaque and two PACE NSC bids, the teams unanimously agreed to break the tie on playoff points per game. Hallsville A finished with 1140 points in playoff games to take fourth, and Centralia A narrowly took fifth place (and the final NSC bid) with 880 points, compared to Helias A's 875 points.

Links to the complete statistics are available at http://ft.moqba.org/.

Thanks to the cooperation of everyone in attendance and to our incredible tournament staff, most teams were done after round 9 by 3:30 and the finals were completed by about 4:15. The staffers who made this possible were Colton from Hallsville; Adam, Franziska, and Sherry from Hickman; coaches Scott Allen from Hallsville, Ryan Kennedy from Centralia, and Jason Loy from Tuscumbia; Diana Harmata and Rachel McNeill; and fellow MOQBA members Matt Chadbourne, David Dennis, Kyle Hill, Stephanie Hull, Jacob O'Rourke, Sean Phillips, and Alex Smith.

I also must give a HUGE thanks to Columbia College for providing us the opportunity to use the facilities on their beautiful campus for the tournament, and the amazing representatives from Columbia College whose advance preparation and assistance during the tournament made my job as tournament director so much easier, including Faye Burchard, Kristen Hartmann, and Kim Craig. Everyone there has been incredibly welcoming and accommodating, and I look forward to working with them to learn from this experience to make the 2016 NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 5 even better!

Within the next couple of days, I will be sending coaches a survey requesting feedback about the tournament and how well hosting the tournament at Columbia College worked out from their perspective.

Thanks again for attending the tournament today, and I hope to see all of you back at Columbia College on March 5 for the NAQT Missouri Qualifier!

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill
2015 MOQBA Fall Tournament director
