Ladue Fall Novice and Middle School Tournament (11/5/11)

Post by Mewto55555 »

The Ladue Academic Team is pleased to announce that we will be holding a quizbowl tournament for novice teams and middle schools on November 5th, 2011, at Ladue High School in St. Louis, Missouri. These two tournaments will be completely separate events; they are merely being held in the same place on the same day. To register for either, or if you have any questions, please email laduequizbowl@gmail.com

High school coaches: It would be an excellent idea to alert teachers in your district's middle school about this opportunity; not only do you get a discount if those schools bring a team, but if your middle school has a team, then many of your future incoming freshmen will start off experienced at quizbowl -- it's a win-win situation!

NOVICE TOURNAMENT:

The novice tournament will be a mirror of the 2011 Fall Novice Tournament (FNT), a pyramidal tournament, which is specially written to appeal to newer or inexperienced players. A copy of last year's FNT can be found here.

As this is a novice tournament, there will be limited eligibility -- only students who are either freshmen or sophomores, or juniors who are in their first year of high school quizbowl (i.e. those who have not played a high school tournament before November 5th, 2010) will be eligible to play. However, if you have any players on your team who are not novices, but would still like to come to the tournament, we are in need of volunteers to help staff. Anyone who helps staff will get a free lunch, and your team will get a discount on your entry fee (see below). So, convince all your varsity players to come along and help out!

The fee structure will be as follows:

First team from a school: $50
Any additional teams from the same school: $45 per team
Buzzer discount*: $5 per system
Staff discount*: $5 per staffer
Middle school discount**: $5 per team (max $10)
Minimum fee: $20 per team.

*Buzzer/staff discounts are on a first come, first serve basis.
** If a team comes from the middle school in your school district, you will get additional money off your entry fee (up to ten dollars).

Right now, the field is capped at 16 teams; register fast if you want your team to have a chance to play! To register, or if you have any questions, please email laduequizbowl@gmail.com

MIDDLE SCHOOL TOURNAMENT:

Our middle school tournament will be run concurrently with our novice tournament; all middle school teams are eligible to attend. We will be using questions provided by Olympia Questions; we will be using ACF Set 2.

The fee structure is as follows:

First team from a school: $45
Additional teams: $40 per team
Buzzer discount*: $5 per system
Staff discount*: $5 per staffer

*Buzzer/staff discounts will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Right now, the field is capped at 8 teams. Register fast if you want your teams to play. To register, or if you have any questions, please email laduequizbowl@gmail.com

The field for both is nearly full, and it doesn't look like we'll be expanding!

Due to staff constraints, we're closing the novice field at 12 teams, and the middle school at 8. If people bring more staffers, we can change that number.

Here's the email I sent out to coaches this weekend:
Coaches,

Here are the details for the novice and middle school tournaments:

The tournament will take place on November 5th at Ladue High School (1201 S. Warson Rd, St. Louis, MO 63124). You'll want to enter via the front entrance, where you will find some our freshmen eagerly waiting to direct you to the registration table. There should be lots of parking on either side of the school.

Registration will begin at 8 and conclude at 8:45, at which point a quick rules meeting and run-down of the schedule will occur. Following that, each team will play 5 preliminary matches, followed by lunch at approximately 12. Since there isn't really much in the way of restaurants within walking distance, we will be ordering pizza to be sold by the slice during lunch-time. If you would like to partake of this pizza, please let us know what toppings you and your team would enjoy and about how much you eat, so we know what to order.

Following this, we will have a few more rounds of play, and then a brief awards ceremony, followed by finals if we need them. We will have awards for the top two teams in each division, as well as books as prizes for the top few individuals and members of the top teams.

As a reminder, we will be using the ACF-2 set from Olympia Questions for the middle school, and the 2011 Fall Novice Tournament for the high school. Each game will consist of 20 pyramidal tossups and 20 rebounding bonuses; we will have negs, or -5 point penalties on early incorrect buzzes on tossups.

For specific format, right now we have 12 high school and 7 middle school teams signed up:

The middle school division will run as a round robin -- every team will play every other team once over the course of seven rounds, with one bye. Teams will play five morning rounds and then two more immediately following lunch. Ideally, awards will begin around 2 and finish around 2:30, followed by finals if needed.

For the high school, it will be a bit more complicated. Teams will be broken up into two brackets of six teams each; each bracket will play a round-robin before lunch. After lunch, teams will be rebracketed, with the top three teams from each preliminary bracket advancing to the playoff bracket, the bottom three from each into a consolation bracket. Each team will then play every other team in their afternoon bracket that they had not played in the morning bracket (so the three teams from the other morning bracket). To determine final standings, only results against teams in your afternoon bracket will be considered (the two games played in the morning and the three in the afternoon). Awards should begin around 2:30 and finish at 3:00, followed by finals if needed.

For the finals for both divisions, it will work as follows: if the top team is two or more wins ahead of the next best team, they will win the tournament automatically. If the top two teams are tied, they will play a one-game final to determine the winner. If the top team is one win above the next best team, then they will play an "advantaged final", in which the top team must win one game to win, whereas the bottom team must win two in a row to win (essentially, a best two-out-of-three match in which the top team is already up a game). Finals should take no more than an hour for either division.

Here is the list of teams registered at present, as well as how many buzzers they are planning to bring. Please respond to this email to confirm that the information is accurate!

Firstly, I'd like to give a huge thank you to Marshall, Sean, Alex, and Noam, as well as everyone on the Ladue team who helped staff this; without them this tournament would have been nowhere near as well-run!

In the high school division, SLUH, Clayton A & B, Pattonville, CBC, and Parkway North all made the top bracket. 1st place went to SLUH, who went 5-0 and cleared the field. Clayton A & B and CBC all went 3-2; CBC declined to play a final and got 4th, and Clayton A beat Clayton B in a very exciting 335-315 game to get 3rd. Pattonville got 5th and Parkway North 6th.

In the middle school division, Richland graciously split up their team so we'd have 8 teams and no byes. Washington A went 7-0 and cleared the field. Ladue and Parkway Northeast went 5-2 and played a one-game contest for 2nd, which Ladue won 200-165. Richland A went 4-3 and got 4th.

Haohang should have stats up tonight or tomorrow. Remember that these questions are not to be discussed with anyone outside the tournament, but if you have any comments on the questions or the running of the tournament itself, please feel free to email laduequizbowl@gmail.com

Thanks to everyone who came out; hopefully you had a great time!
