I'm back!

Post by psychomanreturns »

well, I'm back. Did you all miss me?

It's time to put up, or shut up. This means you "BILL." Just a hint, don't pick Nixa this year.

With districts just one week away, let's get some action on this site. My god, this site is slower right now than Jason getting a driver's license.

Pick your district winners and runner-ups. You get three points for a correct district winner pick and one point for each runner-up.

Next, pick the team with the highest district championship game score in each class. Each of these correct answers is worth 5 points.

Then, when it is over, high point man is the champion prognisticator. In case of a tie, the person who submits his or her entry first "wins."

The winner reigns supreme for one month.

Your honor is on the line.

Class 4 -
1. Cape Girardeau Central (total guess), Poplar Bluff 2nd.
2. SLUH, Eureka 2nd
3. Clayton, LHW 2nd
4. FZW, Kirksville 2nd
5. Rockbridge, Jefferson City 2nd
6. Ozark, Kickapoo (?) 2nd.
7. Blue Springs, Lee's Summit North
8. Liberty, NKC 2nd. Highest score, and highest combined score.*
*I rethought this one based on the Lexington, Savannah, and conference having both of us put up high schores in our matches, with very little going unanswered.

Class 3 -
1. Notre Dame, NMCC 2nd
2. Cuba, Burroughs 2nd
3. Umm... Macon, Montgomery county 2nd (both get a ???)
4. South Calloway, Osage 2nd
5. Salem, Ava 2nd
6. Lamar?, El Dorado Springs 2nd?
7. Oak Grove, Warsaw 2nd
8. Savannah, Smithville 2nd. Highest score, and highest combined score.

Class 2 -
1. South Pemiscot, Koshkonong 2nd
2. VIBURNUM!!!! (not really). Steelville?, Iberia 2nd?(really, that district's a crap shoot for me because the only team I've seen was New Haven and we in esscence zeroed them. The only points they got were on a worksheet.)
3. Smithton, Elsberry 2nd
4. Scotland County, Knox County 2nd
5. Richland, Fordland. Highest combined score.
6. McAuley Catholic, Purdy 2nd.
7. St. Mary's, Barstowe 2nd. (And I call this district goes 0-3 at state)
8. Tarkio, Plattsburg 2nd. Highest team score.

Class 1 -
1. Bradleyville, Cooter 2nd (I picked it cause it sounds cool)
2. Thomas Jefferson, Lockwood 2nd. Highest team score, highest combined score.
3. St. Elizabeth, Hume 2nd. No one else shows up, I bet.
4. Pilot Grove, Bunceton 2nd
5. Wellington-Napoleon, Kansas City Lutheran
6. North Shelby??, Brashear??
7. King City, Union Star 2nd??
8. Mound City, St Jo X-tian 2nd.

I included highest combined score because i think that can also be a very good indicator of a team's quality. If they win 400-340 that's much more impressive than winning 400-30.

I think the winner of this contest should receive a prize at state. What say you, Psychoman?

I'll make my winning picks after class.

Ryan, you're missing Class 4 District 4 (with Kirksville and the Fort Zumwalt and Francis Howell schools, among others)

I'm a little interested in the Clever pick for runner up to Richland - of course, since you're from that part of the state you've seen more of those teams so you probably have more information than the rest of us. Would you happen to have any pertinent scores, etc. from that part of the state that may not have been posted yet?

--edit--
This is what I found... any other firsthand observations?
Richland January Tournament
Monday: Clever 225 - Fordland 150
Finals: Clever 290 vs. Fordland 230

2. VIBURNUM!!!! (not really). Steelville?, Iberia 2nd?(really, that district's a crap shoot for me because the only team I've seen was New Haven and we in esscence zeroed them. The only points they got were on a worksheet.)
We massacred them [Steelville] at Cuba, and we massacred New Haven at Washington. The only points they got were a few bonus rebounds and a tossup followed up on existentialism followed by a bonus on Rosseau. Final score was something like 390 to 60. Our B team at Cuba beat New Haven by about 100 points iirc. And that's saying something, our B team consisted of all quizbowling n00bs).

Yeah, I think a dead tree stump could probably win C2D2 this year. So sad, really... my old district...

When you become mayor of Vibur -- I mean, Matt City -- in 2008 will you mandate that the academic team is required to score at least 5 points in each game it plays?

5 ppg may be too lofty a goal at first; I'd probably settle for requiring them to actually sign up for the tournaments they intend to play (which apparently was nothing this year).

Rolla's not much good are they? I lived there for a year (my dad teaches at UMR) but we moved. My old math teacher coaches now (Ms. Schmidt). They didn't get into the top 16 at WUHSAC and at Cuba they didn't too well either. Ah, my 8th grade year at RJH was so..... weird.

About a 30 feet away from school property there's a trailer park, and if you cross the road from the trailer park and walk about 50 feet, you'll get to nice suburbs.

1411A Commercial Avenue FTW.

It's assuring to see that people's predictions signify a Eureka win against SLUH. I'd have put in my predictions, but sadly, I would only be able to intelligently predict results for Class 4.
Class 4:

1. Poplar Bluff; Central CG
2. SLUH; Eureka (I'm hoping I'll be wrong)
3. Clayton; Ladue
4. Kirksville; FZW
5. Helias; Rock Bridge
6. Nixa; Rolla
7. Blue Springs; Lee's Summit North
8. NKC; Liberty
Top scorer: NKC

The problem with SLUH is that they don't go to anything, so we can't really gauge them beyond their scant 4-2 record at Wash U. Just FYI, Abdullah, they were seeded behind you automatically b/c they lost to NKC in the first game. Although They still had lower PPG than you, but they put a better score on us (which could be attributed to any number of things). So I really don't know which team is better.

Say, where has SLUH played this year, besides WUHSAC? The format there wasn't exactly our team favorite (10 point bonuses as opposed to 5 point bonuses, 20 toss ups, etc) and I'd like to see what's going down with them in more MSHSAA-esque rules.

I wonder if SLUH has unencrypted wireless internet. I'd bring a laptop with a wireless card and post the scores as they happened if I can get a guarantee that it does.

SLUH Technology - I like this bullet point: "Primarily Mac OS X (Tiger 10.4)"

:D

They do have campus-wide wireless, but I doubt it's open. I would imagine most places anymore (schools and businesses at least) are smart enough not to leave their wireless network wide open. Of course, a certain part of the building might offer unencrypted access.

Liberty's library had unencrypted wireless (although the range was pretty bad - had to be fairly close to the circulation desk) before it went building-wide; the library is probably still open access but I'm sure the rest of the building isn't (it may even be for teachers only).

Maybe I can get Katelin to bring her Macbook this weekend (assuming she's not stuck working for the blatantly law-breaking learners wage that Worlds of Fun is giving her) - if not I can always log into her account

:P

I knew they didn't register soon enough for the fall tournament, but for some reason I was thinking Rolla wasn't at the spring tournament either... I must have been looking at the small school results then. They weren't too bad in their loss against New Madrid but had two pretty major losses to Liberty.

My dad's a professor in "Nukulur" Engineering. Shoaib Usman. I've not the faintest clue of what goes on in his classroom.

New Madrid is pretty good, but it seems to be a one man gig, with Woody over there scoring 90% of the points in the game we played them at (Bonne Terre). He's a senior, and next year, what hope does New Madrid have?

New Madrid has been pretty good for some time. In 2004, they beat us at Warrenton before we got revenge in the playoffs.

In 2004, Woody was a Freshman and they were still quite good because he made an instant impact there. And yes, they are a one man show although a couple of their players went to ACE last summer, I think. Cape ND is a one man show as well though... unfortunately that seems to be what the Southeast region produces.. teams with one really good person and then no team to back it up ... Travis Eakin of Bell City being another example. The last truly balanced team in SE Missouri was the Cape Central team that won state my freshman year... they were hardcore.

I think Liberty/NKC will provide the highest combined score, but not very likely the highest team score. Expect us to bring the other's points down by as much as we can

I'm a little interested in the Clever pick for runner up to Richland -

--edit--
This is what I found... any other firsthand observations?
Richland January Tournament
Monday: Clever 225 - Fordland 150
Finals: Clever 290 vs. Fordland 230
Coach Henson has a great team at Clever. However, just a few notes to add: That was our first competition of the season, our #2 scorer had a very sub-par tournament (only averaged 1 toss-up per game compared to her normal 4 to 6 partly due to the lack of many true lit questions), and when we met them later in the season we beat them 190 - 120 without either of our co-captains. I still believe they could win several districts in class 2, so picking them isn't bad at all, but I'm hoping we can play more like we did later in the season (and hopefully even a little better seeing that we'll have our full arsenal to rotate with).

I would also have to give chances to at least Sparta (beat Clever in their conference championship) and Pleasant Hope. Osceola has had some fine teams in the past also, but I don't know anything about how they've done this year.

Now that all districts are in I will bump this.

Bold indicates correct predictions, italic incorrect
Will edit as more results come in

With all districts reported:
15 champions correct (45 pts)
12 2nd place teams correct (12 pts)

11 champions predicted to be runner-up

Class 1 High Score prediction correct (5 pts)
Class 2 High Score prediction incorrect
Class 3 High Score prediction correct (but also tied with another team) (5pts)
Class 4 High Score predictions incorrect

67 points total (out of 148)

Bradleyville, Saxony Lutheran
TJ, Lockwood
St. Elizabeth, Tuscumbia
Pilot Grove, Glasgow
Wellington-Napoleon, KC Lutheran
North Shelby, Macon County
King City, Stanberry
Mound City, St. Joe Christian

High score: TJ
Highest runner-up score: who knows

Class 2:
Koshkonong, South Pemiscot
Belle, Iberia
Elsberry, New Bloomfield
Scotland County, Knox County
Richland, Fordland
McAuley, Purdy
Barstow, St. Paul Lutheran
Tarkio, North Platte

High Score: Tarkio (I'm basing this off of Fordland playing a good game and keeping Richland's score down)
Highest runner-up score: Fordland (potentially 2nd highest Class 2 score)

Class 3:
New Madrid CC, Notre Dame
Cuba, Burroughs
Macon, Montgomery County
South Callaway, Hallsville
Dixon, Ava
El Dorado Springs, Reeds Spring
Pembroke Hill, Oak Grove
Savannah, Smithville

High Score: Savannah
Highest runner-up score: Smithville (potentially 2nd highest Class 3 score)

Class 4:
Poplar Bluff, Cape Central
Eureka, SLUH
Ladue, Clayton
FZW, Kirksville
Rock Bridge, Helias
Ozark, NIXA
Blue Springs, Lee's Summit North
NKC, Liberty

High Score: NKC
Highest runner-up score: Liberty (most likely 2nd highest Class 4 score)

I'd like to miss 9 certain points on my Class 4 prediction...

My results:
15 winners
8 runner ups
3 highest scores
TOTAL SCORE 68

Other things to note, I had 3 districts where I picked the finalists but inverted their order. Of the other districts where one of my choices for finalist did not make the finals, I picked 4 2nd place teams that actually won, and 6 first place teams that actually got 2nd. I also correctly guessed the two highest combined scores.

So I calculated it up, and here are the results:
1st - Jason Mueller (82)
2nd - TMCE (74)
3rd - Kent (72)
4th - Me (68)
5th - Jeff (67, but he entered first)
6th - Ryan (67)
7th - Bill (62)
8th - Mitchell (59)
9th - Abdullah (15)

Oh, AND I HEAR A CHORUS OF ANGELS CELEBRATING NOW THAT I'M POSTING AGAIN!!!!

I only really had predictions for C1D8 and C2D8, and I was thinking Plattsburg would be either first or second in C2D8 (I wasn't sure if we [Tarkio] would be or not) and I was expecting either Mound City or St. Joe Christian for C1D8. I don't know anything about any of the other classes, districts, or anything (other than Savannah is pretty good

;) )
