BRIC 2021- March 13th, 2021

Post by dschenewerkmhs »

The members of Mexico High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the fifth Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge (BRIC), scheduled for March 13th, 2021. BRIC will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:

Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.

Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with additional five points will be awarded if a tossup is answered correctly before a pre-determined point. No penalty will be assessed for interrupting the moderator with an incorrect answer.

All tossups are five seconds, except for math computation tossups which will receive ten seconds.

The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer. Bonuses will not bounceback.

In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.

Each team shall have one 30-second timeout per match. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.

Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

We are planning to use Google Meet for our virtual platform and Buzzin.Live for our buzzer system.

NAQT has assigned BRIC the IS-197 set. Tournaments hosted by El Dorado Springs, Houston, Poplar Bluff and Savannah are also using this set; if you have attended or plan to attend any using this set, you will not be able to participate in BRIC. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams and two teams per school; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

We anticipate serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and PACE’s online National Scholastic Championship.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. Teams should begin logging in around 8 a.m., with the first round set for 8:15 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending between 4 and 5 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:

Each team: $70

Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10

Discount for providing a competent moderator: $20

Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

The tournament is under the direction of Mexico High School Coach Dale Schenewerk and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership. Participants will be expected to abide by the Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) promulgated by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2021MexicoBRIC. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Dale Schenewerk at dschenewerk@mexico.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2021 BRIC” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you via Google Meet on March 13th.

Congratulations to Parkway South A, who recovered from their narrow Round One loss to run the tables and finish the rest of the day unblemished, complete with a 325-130 victory over Eureka in the championship game.  Fair Grove A claimed third over Moberly, while Mexico A pulled away from Parkway South B to claim fifth and Hannibal also surged late in their victory over Jasper for seventh.
Stats: CompletePrelimsPlayoffs

Today's event would not have been possible with our staff who took time out of their Saturday to moderate and scorekeep at BRIC: Michael McDonald from Eureka, Michelle Wahlquist from Fair Grove, Levi Maxwell from Fatima, Louis Schnoebelen from Fulton, Ted Hall from Lakeland, and Kathy Brandon from Moberly; MOQBA members Audrey Brandon and Sean Phillips; community members Jason Lamb, Carolyn Lewis, Jeff Moeller, Dale Sr & Shari Schenewerk, Andrew Seal, and Ed Stephens; MHS students Ava, Charlie and Tristan; and MHS faculty members Steve Haag, Walter Hollis, Julie Tucker, and Lindsey Yancey.

Immense gratitude again goes to MHS Coach Dale Schenewerk, assistant Trevor Dunn, MMS coach Liz Seal, and everyone with Mexico's scholar bowl program.  Sustained, successful tournaments need a sturdy edifice of a program to keep them growing year after year, and the brick structure that is Mexico Scholar Bowl has provided a firm foundation to make BRIC the magnet of a competition it was today.  Additional thanks go to activities director Travis Blevins, principal Brad Ellebracht, superintendent Dr Tammy Lupardus, and everyone at Mexico School District 59 for their continued support for their competitive scholars.

Last year, Mexico marked the end of the competitive season for several teams as the coronavirus reached pandemic status.  With a year of virtual contests completed and an end in sight to the pandemic, we are hopeful that next year we'll be able to compete next season face-to-face, with many of you making the drive to the Brick City.  We hope you're able to join us next season at BRIC, and wish you all the best as districts, state and nationals approach.

I close as always with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
