Fellow Coaches

Clever HS will be hosting its 6th annual Clever High School Invitational Scholar Bowl tournament on November 21, 2020. The tournament will be in the 20 Tossup/20 Bonus format using Powers. We will NOT be using Negs. Due to virtual constraints, we will NOT use Bouncebacks on Bonus Questions. My apologies for how late this email is being sent. This year has been incredibly busy and finding 30 minutes to type this email has been difficult.

We will use question set IS-195 from National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT). This set is (at the time of posting) being used in Missouri by Smithville on 01/30/21. There are several Out-of-state tournaments also scheduled for this event. Please double check no other tournament you attend is using this set before entering. You can find free sample questions at http://www.naqt.com.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there are several items I need everyone to be aware of BEFORE YOU SIGN UP.
This tournament is meeting virtually using the platform Discord. This was selected due to its ability to front-load the work to run the tournament and ensure the smoothest operation by myself and my assistant coach. Please make sure your school is okay with your team using this platform for the event.

All staffers will login Thursday, November 19th for the routine Staff meeting. This will also include a microphone and connection check. I will announce the time after finding out when everyone is available (probably around 4:30 or another convenient after-school time). This will allow us to make any last minute changes due to technology issues and speed up operations the day-of the event. (I can schedule another time with you if something doesn’t work out).

It is recommended that teams all login on one device to minimize connectivity issues with bandwidth. This isn’t required, but it will help smooth operations for everyone. (Multiple teams will need at least one device per team. Staffers will need a separate device).
At this time, the plan is that we will use buzzin.live as the buzzer the day-of.

Please consider this: To run a tournament I need about 1 volunteer per entered team (2 staffers per room, 2 teams per room). The more volunteers I have, the more teams I can enter. Coaches can staff as well. Please consider doing this as there is a LOT of interest, but staffing has always held back this event’s sign-ups.

We are currently capping the field at 18 teams. The field can expand if there is enough staff and my Assistant Coach and I are comfortable with the added technical workload. Matches will begin at 8:30 AM, and there will be a lunch break around 12:00-12:30 PM. I am planning on games lasting 45 minutes each, which puts us close to a Noon lunch. Lunch will be approximately 30-45 minutes depending on how long rebracketing and resorting teams takes within the servers. Please have your team’s lunch planned ahead of time so we can start punctually after this.

Please understand that, until I confirm with you via email, your team(s) are not registered. I will create a waiting list if this tournament fills up. I will do my best to accommodate as many teams as I can, but I won’t expand until I have more confirmed staff for the event. Those on the waiting list offering staff will gain priority registration.

I plan on awarding trophy/plaques to the top 2 teams, and individual medals for the top 10 scorers of the morning sessions. These will be mailed to the schools after the event. Feel free to email me with any questions at walkers@cleverbluejays.org.

This tournament will (obviously) not tolerate any kind of misconduct or mistreatment of players. Anyone apart of this tournament who feels harassed, mistreated, or generally has a problem can come to me or any staff member and it will be dealt with immediately. If you or your players are afraid of the aggressor, don’t like me or don’t like my solution, or just in general want to, you can report all incidents of misconduct HERE. As this form states, all responses are kept anonymous (where legal).

On a side note, if you are hosting a tournament we would gladly like information as we are looking to fill our season as well. If you are considering hosting, please feel free to ask me questions. If I don’t know the answer I have contacts who I can ask as well.

One last thing (since I apparently forgot it in my pre-registration email), The costs are as follows:
$70 Per team
$10 Discount per Scorekeeper
$20 Discount per Moderator
Discounts may compound and continue to be added, but Minimum cost per team is $45 per team.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me via email at walkers@cleverbluejays.org

We have expanded to 24 and have exhausted the waiting list (with 2 spots remaining). Further expansion is possible if we can locate the staff to help run this.

After a round of Cancellations and additions due to various reasons, I have one spot open for this weekend.

At the moment, we're full. The above fields are not correct, but I barely have time to type this, let alone update the above.

I will take waiting list teams still as we have seen a cancellation each day this week.

First: THANK YOU.

Everyone was amazing on Saturday. There were moments last week I wanted to call this off due to how much COVID was changing the best laid plans, but everyone today made this worth it 100 times over.

We ended the day with College Heights winning 1st in the 9th round match over North Kansas City A. Kickapoo A came in 3rd place over Palmyra, who got 4th.

Special Thanks to Jeff Hill (MOQBA) , Kyle Hill (MOQBA) , Angela Forrest (CHCS), Gloria Gammel (Parkview), Spender Templeton (Orchard Farm), Michelle Wahlquist (Fair Grove), Kent Sameshima (Spokane), Brian Hance ( Oak Park), Jean Miller (CHCS), Pat O'Keefe (NKC), Michael Walker (Mountain Grove) and Brandon Stilwell (NKC) for moderating on Saturday. Thanks to Devon Miller (Fair Grove), Becca McGarry (Clever), Sarah W (NKC), Kayla Wicke (CHCS), Thu Dao (NKC), Ana Galatas (NKC) And the ARMY of Clever HS players for scorekeeping (especially the ones quarantined and doing it from home).

Saturday would NOT have been possible without the best assistant coach, Quinn McGarry. He setup all the google meets, and balanced between watching game stats come in, running (physically) between 12 chromebooks to let everyone into rooms, and being annoyed when I didn't know basic Multiplication tables. I'm not sure I would have survived Saturday without him, so thank for your help, Quinn.

Thanks to every coach and player, no matter what roles you had. You were patient with our staff, our technology, and your other teams. Overall we had a great day and I couldn't have been happier with the result.

Full stats are up on https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6655/

Again, Thank you EVERYONE for Saturday. I am proud to be a part of the Missouri Quizbowl Community, and Saturday made me even prouder.
