:( CANCELLED: 2020 OMAR - Moberly HS, 4th April 2020

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

UPDATE 17th March 2020, 1120a: OMAR is cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the sixth Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR), scheduled for April 4th, 2020. OMAR will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup. We will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Each incorrect part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • Math computation tossups and bonus shall receive ten seconds instead of 15.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Teams will have to use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
Again we will have Varsity and Novice/JV divisions. If enough interest exists, we may consider adding an “elite” division. Teams in the Novice division are limited to players who are freshmen, sophomores who have not competed at a national tournament, and juniors who are in their first year of competition. Teams may sign up for either division. The size of each field will depend on demand as well as viability of pool setups. We will set a preliminary field cap of 18 teams per division. Teams will be placed on a waitlist once initial caps are met and contacted should an opening occur, or if either or both of the fields expand.

All divisions will run on NAQT IS-193A. At present, tournaments at Fair Grove, Maryville and ViburnumDeSoto are also using this set; if you plan to attend any of these events, you will not be able to compete in OMAR.

We anticipate the Varsity division of OMAR serving as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
  • Discount for competing at MYST: $10
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road, best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Again we anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2020OMARSignups. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at KathyBrandon@moberlyspartans.org or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2020 OMAR” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on April 4th.

Our initial cap in the Varsity division has been reached. If additional staff is lined up, we are willing to expand.

We still have five spots in the Novice division.

Per Coach Brandon:
Moberly is still open for business at this time, but we have received word that all after school activities (sports competitions and concerts) are cancelled this week, and next week is our spring break. Events for the following week (including OMAR) will be evaluated as those dates get closer.

If you receive word from your district that will restrict your attendance at OMAR, please let me know as soon as you are able. We have received one cancellation so far; I expect there will be others.
Again, if your registration needs to change, please contact Coach Brandon at KathyBrandon@moberlyspartans.org or myself at kyle@hillonline.net.

Another update from Coach Brandon:
Moberly has just announced its closure through April 3. With only Easter weekend available before the district date of April 18, we will be unable to reschedule.

I know this is not the way we wanted to end the regular season for scholar bowl, but these are interesting times, to say the least.

For those who had already submitted payments, refunds will be forthcoming.

Best wishes to all, and I hope to see some of you on April 18 for districts.
Please take all necessary precautions, hunker down with some old packets, and most importantly: ”Be Safe! Be Smart!”
