2020 NAQT Missouri Qualifier - February 29 at Columbia College

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the NAQT Missouri Qualifier on February 29, 2020 at Columbia College in Columbia. As this is one of MOQBA's flagship events, we expect to host a geographically diverse field and encourage high school teams from every area of the state to attend.

The tournament will use the 2020 NAQT Division II Collegiate Sectionals question set, which is more challenging than NAQT's regular season Invitational Series questions but a step below the difficulty of NAQT's High School National Championship Tournament questions. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team has not previously heard this question set and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; a list of tournaments known to be using this set is available on NAQT's website.

Registration opens Wednesday, December 4 (tomorrow) at 6 AM. For more information about the tournament and a link to the registration form, see the full announcement on our website.

The initial 24-team field is now full. Per our announcement, the first team from each additional school that registers before January 15 will be given priority on the waitlist over the 17 B and C teams already waiting for a spot. We are working hard to be able to expand the field to at least 30-36 teams, and we expect to be able to do so once we have a firmer handle on the number of moderators and scorekeepers we will have available, so if you sign up before January 15 there is a good chance we can fit you into the field. As always, we will do everything we can to accommodate as many teams as possible.

On a related note, if anyone is interested in staffing on February 29, please get in touch with either Jeffrey or me at your earliest convenience; we provide a free pizza lunch to all our staff and can also reimburse your gas expenses if needed.

We are excited to announce that the field has been expanded to 42 teams, which would make this the largest Qualifier to date! Thanks to all of the teams, our wonderful staff volunteers, and Columbia College for making this possible!

We are aiming to make one final expansion to 48 if we can confirm a few more moderators and scorekeepers. We encourage anyone interested in staffing the tournament to email us at qualifier@moqba.org as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience as we balance our desire to accommodate as many teams as possible while ensuring that the tournament will be adequately staffed to run efficiently.

After round 8, St. Louis Patriots, St. Joseph Central A, Ladue A, and Thomas Jefferson A won their playoff pools to advance to the top 4 superplayoffs. After round 11, St. Louis Patriots were 3-0 in the superplayoffs while Ladue A was 2-1, setting up an advantaged final. Ladue A won the first game 355-150 to force a final deciding match, which the Patriots won 310-155 to earn their first NAQT Missouri Qualifier title!

For the small school title, Hallsville A finished seventh overall while Centralia A finished in eighth. The teams decided not to play a final, so the small school title was effectively decided by their round 10 game, which Hallsville won 295-100 to earn their eighth consecutive NAQT Missouri Qualifier small school title! Earning a spot in the top 16 overall, Weaubleau was awarded the Very Small School title.

See the full recap on our website.

Thanks to all of the teams, staff, and the extraordinary representatives from Columbia College for making this Leap Day Qualifier a very special event and the largest Qualifier to date! We hope to see you all again next year!
