Coaches,

Clever HS will be hosting its 4th annual Clever High School Invitational Scholar Bowl tournament on November 17, 2018. The tournament will be in the 20 Tossup/20 Bonus format, with bounce backs on bonuses. We will NOT be using “Powers” or “Negs.”

We will use question set IS-177 from National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT). This set is (at the time of posting) being used by Hallsville as well. Please double check no other tournament you attend is using this set before entering. You can find free sample questions at http://www.naqt.com.

We are currently capping the field at 18 teams. The field can expand if there is more interest and more importantly staff. Last year there was interest, but staffing was what kept us from expanding.

Prices are:
- $70 for the first team from a school, $65 for each additional team. ($5 increase from last year)
- Fully functional buzzer systems are a $5 discount (must work for 8 players, limit 2 discounts per team). Preference given to those whose systems require the moderator to reset buzzers.
- Providing an experienced moderator (reader) is a $15 discount. Please let us know about these well in advance. We reserve the right to refuse moderators .
- Teams traveling over 100 miles (one way per Google Maps) will receive a $5 discount.
-$50 minimum per team.

Matches will begin at 9:00 AM, and there will be a lunch break around 12:00-12:30 PM. Lunch options are mostly in neighboring towns (10 minute drive at least). Should my volunteers work out again, we will grill up hamburgers and hot dogs again. I will get concession pricing together soon. I don't plan on the tournament going any later than 5:00 PM.

Spots will be filled on a first come/first served basis. Rather than emailing me, please use this form to register. Starting this year, teams will be allowed 2 entries with all additional teams being put on the waiting list. “C” teams will be added to the lineup at 2 weeks before the event.

Please understand that, until I confirm with you via email, your team(s) are not registered. I will create a waiting list if this tournament fills up. Those who can provide experienced staffers could gain priority over those just bringing teams on the waiting list.

I plan on awarding trophy/plaques to the top 3 teams, and individual medals for the top 10 scorers of the morning sessions. Currently, this is scheduled at the High School off of Mo-14. Feel free to email me with any questions at walkers@cleverbluejays.org.

On a side note, if you are hosting a tournament we would gladly like information as we are looking to fill our season as well.

This tournament has been awarded PACE Platinum Certification. This means that the top 25% of teams in this tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for the national high school quizbowl championship, the PACE NSC on the weekend of June 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Reston outside of Washington, D.C.

As I sit in my comfy chair in my Superman sweatpants with my dog licking my feet, I am so thankful for everyone's help in making today a HUGE success (and you're welcome for the free mental image...and no I don't know why my dog licks my feet and yes I think its gross too).

Final stats of the day are here:
http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5384/

Kickapoo A went undefeated for the day taking 1st and College Heights A came in 2nd. We had a 3 way tie for 3rd, with Spokane pulling it out on points for the day.

Extra special thank you to Eldon Haun (Richland), Jason Pounds (Houston), Brett Kelley (Houston), Mike Pisanti (Exeter), Michael Walker (Mt. Grove), William Koch (SBU), Brandon Keith (Clever), Haley Adams (Clever), and Randy Massey (Clever). The reading today was exceptional and we wouldn't have finished at 3:45 without all of your help.

Other thank yous go out to Caylee Keith, Scott Shoudis, Stephanie Brown, 2 Houston Students and 1 Sparta student who came to keep score.

Thanks to the entire Clever Academic Team who worked their tails off as well to make today work. An Extra special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. McGaughey (also known as "Ian's Parents") who ran an exceptional concession stand and made sure we all were fed, beveraged, and ready for the afternoon in 45 minutes.

All-in-all, I've never left my home tournament as early as 5:06PM having completed 81 games of competition, fed 140+ people, and cleaned the area of the school we used. This is in large part to all team's contributions. Everyone made sure to keep the pace going, stay quiet in the hallways, and most of all have fun which made hosting well worth it.

Thanks you to everyone and I hope to see you at next year's tournament
