Does anyone out there have any experience with the UMR High School Invitational? What teams will be there or are usually there? Is Round-Robin or Double-Elimination used? Any information would be helpful!

It is MSHSAA format, with three swiss-paired rounds in the morning. I don't recall off the top of my head how many teams make the afternoon or how many teams are coming, but Bill should be able to help you with that.

What's a Swiss-paired round? And who is Bill?

Well, Swiss-paired rounds are designed to put similar-strength teams against each other (they're also used at many chess tournaments). As for who Bill is, well, that would be Bill Stallard, the man in charge of the UMR quiz bowl program.

Could you give an example of two teams that might be paired? Oh yes, Bill Stallard, thanks Jason.

By the way, here is my formal introduction to this message board: I'm Warren Hays, from Eugene.

well we usually do a college bowl format of 20 questions 20 bonus (but we went to this due to time). Swiss paired is you get a random number lets go with a 8 team example.
round 1
1-2
3-4
5-6
7-8

lets say all odd number win

round 2
1-3
5-7
2-4
6-8

round 3
1-5(winners from round 2)
3-7
2-6
4-8

thus giving one 3-0, 3-- 2-1, 3-- 1-2 and one 0-3.

Right now we have 21 teams your coach should have a list I sent it out last week

Welcome to the board. We played you guys at state last year in an awesome game. (I'm Matt Chadbourne, formerly from Viburnum, now at UMR.) I see you guys are in our district this year, along with Richland.

Ah, thanks for the explanation Bill (I'm guessing that's who East Buc is). I'll ask my coach for the list, but do you happen to remember any of the teams who will be there?

Westminster Christian and Thomas Jefferson are two I remember off the top of my head. And yes, East Buc & UMR is the one and only Bill Stallard.

Hey there Matt! I certainly do remember you. That was an awesome game we played at state - only 25 points between us in the end.

And congrats on making 1st in All-State in our Class! I actually made 2nd, however that's possible, since Eugene only played 3 games and lost all.

Yes, we have an extremely tough district this year. But we'll try our best to give the other teams hell (esp Richland).

Ok, cool. Which teams are large and which ones are small? Just a guess that Eugene will be considered small.

all depends on MSHSAA enrollments from the last cycle. They will be some schools maybe in class 2 that make it to large school, tough to say without doing the enrollments now. After I get this book read I will post what they look like now

Well the bad news I forgot MCN is dropping one of their teams

Here is the break down

Large
MCleur North--1472
Rolla
Poplar Bluff
Helias
Carthage
WCA
Salem--718
Fatima--363

Small
Dixon--355
Eugene
Norwood
TJ
Pilot Grove
St Elizabeth
Tuscumbia--89

Not happy about having to place Fatima in large school, hopefully we will get another school so we can drop them down to small

Do you have to have eight large schools? It just looks too egregious.

Why are you having your tournament on the same day as Cuba? Anyway, that sucks cuz I wish Savannah could go since WCA will be there but I think Luce already scheduled Cuba for us.

I've heard that the questions in this tournament are conceived by college students, is that correct?

Girls hahaha that is a good one. You will know who you play the day of. Were coach will draw a number and that will be your place in the bracket. But the questions will be close to district level(hard for me to say since I have not been to one in 4 years)

Darn. I could get that one.

It should be +1 by Sunday, maybe earlier depending on whether I get Internet access this weekend.

All the history was good. Some of that geography was dang hard (ie. "Given a state in the United States and it's national ranking in population from the 2000 Census, name the city."), but still made me think, so I liked it.

Way too much calculus. Yuck. Cut out most of the math if ya like.

Some of those questions had to have been written just a couple days beforehand. There was a bonus set about "Goon tactics and John Chaney" or something, and I remember hearing about that only this past Friday.

Overall the questions were good.

Hey Bill, do you have an updated list of those team and individual scoring sheets taped to the wall?
