2018 NAQT Missouri Qualifier - March 3 at Columbia College

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance invites all MSHSAA-registered high school Scholar Bowl teams to participate in the eleventh annual NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 3, 2018 on the main campus of Columbia College in Columbia. As one of MOQBA's flagship events, this tournament regularly features a diverse field of teams from throughout Missouri, recognizing the state's top teams for national tournament qualification in a fast-paced championship atmosphere.

The NAQT Missouri Qualifier will use the 2018 NAQT Division II Collegiate Sectionals question set, which is more challenging than NAQT's regular season Invitational Series questions but a step below the difficulty of NAQT's High School National Championship Tournament questions. This is a change from previous Qualifiers because NAQT is producing one fewer Invitational Series set this year.

As of December 14, this set was not assigned to any other high school tournament in Missouri. It is your responsibility to ensure that your entire team has not previously heard any part of NAQT's 2018 Collegiate Sectionals question sets and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; a list of tournaments known to be using this set is available on NAQT's website.

For more information about the tournament and a link to the registration form, see the full announcement on our website. Hope to see you in Columbia on March 3!

We now have teams from 24 schools, filling our initial field. We anticipate expanding to 30-36 teams once we have enough staff.

If your school has not yet registered but would like to attend, please register by Sunday, December 31 to secure a good spot on the waitlist for your first team. The first team from each additional school registering before the end of the month will be added in the first waitlist group ahead of the B and C teams already on the waitlist (with any additional teams added at the end of the second group). Starting on January 1, all new registrations will be added to the end of the waitlist. While we will strive to recruit enough staff for all interested teams to participate, your chance of receiving adequate notice of an opening may drop significantly if you wait until the new year to register.

A few quick updates:

There have been a couple of drops, so we now have an opening! If your school isn't registered and would like to sign up, please see the announcement for details and a link to the registration form. If your school is already registered and would like to add another team to your registration, please email us at qualifier@moqba.org to update your information.

This tournament is platinum certified by PACE, meaning the top 25% will qualify for the 2018 PACE NSC on June 2-3 in the Washington D.C. area.

In addition to our overall top 4 and small school champion awards, we have decided to award a "Very Small School Champion" this year. We will define a "very small school" as a "traditional public" small school eligible team that is in MSHSAA Classes 1 or 2 for Scholar Bowl. (Note that this definition for a "very small school" is more restrictive than NAQT's.)

We're now just under 24 hours until the start of the eleventh NAQT Missouri Qualifier! Don't forget to check MOQBA's Facebook and Twitter feeds for live updates throughout the day. We'll be using the hashtag #NAQTMO again this year. Have a safe trip, everyone - we're looking forward to seeing you bright and early in the morning!

After round 9, Ladue A, Hallsville, Central (St. Joseph), and Hickman A advanced to the superplayoffs, while the remaining championship tier teams played round 10 placement games. Ladue A and Central were both undefeated going into their scheduled round 11 game, effectively setting up a best of three final. Ladue won the first two games 365-195 and 310-235 to earn their third NAQT Missouri Qualifier title!

For the small school title, Hallsville A finished in third place overall and was awarded the small school title outright as the only eligible team to reach the superplayoffs. This is Hallsville's sixth consecutive NAQT Missouri Qualifier small school title!

We also introduced a "very small school" title this year, awarded to the top-ranked small school eligible team in MSHSAA Classes 1 or 2 for Scholar Bowl. Louisiana was declared the Very Small School Champion with an eighth place finish overall.

See the full recap on our website.

Thanks to all of the teams, staff, and the extraordinary representatives from Columbia College for making this another successful event! We hope to see many of you return to Columbia College for the Pre-Nationals Tournament on May 12!
