Centralia Autumn Academic Tournament V--November 18th, 2017

Post by CentraliaCoach »

Centralia High School is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Fifth Annual Centralia Autumn Academic Tournament on Saturday, November 18, 2016 at Centralia High School in Centralia, MO. We will be limiting the roster size to six players per team, but we encourage you to bring multiple teams to maximize playing time for all of your players.

This tournament is a regular difficulty event that plans to use the Maryland Fall question set. Games will consist of 20 tossups with three-part, non-rebounding bonuses.

The exact schedule for the tournament will depend on the final field size, but teams should expect to be divided into preliminary pools that will each play a round robin, followed by a re-bracketing into championship and consolation pools. If the field fills, all teams should expect to play 9 games, ending around 4:00, with any necessary finals and tiebreakers following.

Washington University will be mirroring Maryland Fall on November 11th; please remember that you cannot play this tournament if you are playing at WUFAT.

The fee structure is:
Base Fee: $70 per first team from a school, $60 per each subsequent team from a school.
Moderator Discount: $20 per approved, competent moderator.
Scorekeeper Discount: A $5 discount will be offered per each needed (used) scorekeeper
Working Buzzer Discount: $5 per buzzer (your system must allow for 8 people to play at any one time for us to use it for the discount).

The field is limited to the first 18 teams to register. If the field fills, additional teams will be placed on a waitlist; if a registered team drops, waitlisted teams will be contacted in the order registration requests were received to fill the available spots.

To register, email me (ryan.kennedy@catnet.gen.mo.us) with the number of teams and any discounts you will be using. Please note that you are not officially registered until you receive an email confirming that your registration was received and accepted.

We anticipate that this tournament will be affiliated with PACE, meaning that at least the top 15% of the field will qualify for the PACE National Scholastics Championship.

We hope to see your teams in Centralia on November 18th. If you have any questions, please let me know.

In light of recent developments within Centralia R-VI, I have been asked to assume the duties of tournament director of the Centralia Autumn Academic Tournament. I will take on these duties alongside interim coach Andrew Reynolds. Participating schools have been informed of the switch.

We look forward to continuing the tradition of exceptional competition at Centralia on November 18th! If anyone has questions related to CAAT V, please contact either myself or Coach Reynolds. The updated field will be in the post that immediately follows this one.

Teams are reminded to submit their rosters before registration Saturday. Changes may be made the morning of the tournament.

With thanks to Hickman and Tolton, we are able to complete our 18-team field! All teams will receive nine games (plus any playoff matches for the top three trophies), and break for lunch after the five prelim games. Saturday is shaping up to be a great day of competition in Centralia!

Moberly A and Hickman A are in the midst of the second game of an advantaged final. Moberly beat Hickman 340-360 in Round 8 of the playoffs, bringing about the advantaged final setup. Hickman had the lead throughout the game, but Moberly got within 10 with two tossups remaining. Kewpies prevailed 290-195 to spoil the Spartans' advantage.

Hickman B was third. Jeff City A and Tolton A rounded out the top five. If we receive platinum certification from PACE, these will be our five qualifiers for the NSC.

Links to stats are in the previous post. Congratulations to Hickman A for going 9-1 on the day to defeat Moberly A. In fact, it was an impressive showing for all the scholars from Hickman today, with all three of their teams advancing to the championship pool. Additionally, we were thrilled to welcome Fulton back to the circuit, as the Hornets fielded two squads on short notice.

I want to extend my gratitude to our tournament help today: moderators Audrey Brandon, Aonghus Dollens, Jon Deering, Stephanie Hull, Shelly Kiesling, Rachel Million, Brandon Moore, Sean Phillips, and Aaron Seider. In particular, I want to thank Sean for taking the lead on several tasks in the run-up to today's tournament. Today was a significant success in sustaining and improving the robust circuit of Central Missouri, and much of the credit goes to the leadership of Centralia's coaching staff, Andrew Reynolds and Andrew Darr, and their group of students. Additional gratitude goes to activities director Nick Larson, principal Matt Smith, superintendent Darin Ford, and all the staff at Centralia R-VI Schools who helped make today's tournament possible, as well as supporting CHS' scholar bowl program throughout the season. I am hopeful that we will see many teams back at Centralia next year for CAAT VI.

And as has fast become tradition at events I help organize, I close with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe, Be Smart!"

The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence has awarded Platinum Certification for CAAT. Therefore, the top five teams (Hickman A, Moberly A, Hickman B, Jefferson City A, Tolton Catholic A) should be receiving bids to the National Scholastic Championship, June 2nd & 3rd in Reston, Virginia.
