Post 2017 NAQT SSNCT - April 28-30 in Chicago
96 Traditional Public School and 30 Charter and Private School teams are competing in NAQT's Small School National Championship Tournament this weekend, including 17 from Missouri!

Traditional Public (15): Exeter*, Gainesville*, Hallsville*, Hermann*, Lathrop*, Louisiana*, Moberly, New Bloomfield*, Orchard Farm A & B, Pilot Grove*, Pleasant Hill, South Callaway*, South Shelby*, Southern Boone
* indicates 10 "Very Small Schools" (300 or fewer in grades 10-12). Everyone plays in the same division, but the top 6 Very Small Schools will also be recognized

Charter and Private (2): St. Pius X, Valle Catholic

The Traditional Public division will use the card system like HSNCT:
Quote:
In the Traditional Public School division, teams will play nine power-matched games arranged via a card system. The cards will ensure that teams with similar records will be playing each other in every round. Every team with a winning record (5–4 or better) will advance to the playoffs. The elimination playoffs will be held on Sunday; teams that finish Saturday 6–3 or better can lose twice before being eliminated; teams that finish 5–4 on Saturday will be eliminated after a single loss.

The Charter and Private division will have 3 pools of 10 in the Saturday preliminary rounds, followed by double-elimination on Sunday for teams with a winning record:
Quote:
In the Charter and Private School division, teams will be divided into three pools of ten teams to play nine round-robin matches on Saturday. Every team with a winning record (5–4 or better) will advance to the playoffs. Sunday’s playoffs will be double-elimination (so every team can lose twice before being eliminated).

Note that (my understanding is) 5-4 teams in the larger Traditional Public division will start the double elimination playoffs with one loss, while the Charter and Private school playoffs will be purely double elimination (i.e., 5-4 teams aren't eliminated with only one loss).

Good luck everyone!

I just want to say that I'm really excited to staff this national for the first time. I'm looking forward to rooting on all of the Missouri teams (along with some of my out-of-state friends)!

I'll try and update as best as I can, although Kyle Hill might be a better bet for this.

HSQBRank projections for the Charter and Private and Traditional Public divisions. Based on Fred Morlan's aPPB, Orchard Farm is ranked #9 and Hallsville #10 among teams in the Traditional Public division, while St. Pius X is ranked #12 in the Charter and Private division. Let's see a strong showing from Missouri and place higher than these projected rankings!

Louisiana #14, Moberly #20... I like the look of that!

It was an incredibly successful Saturday in Chicago for Missouri's teams in the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament! Eight of our fifteen teams advanced to the 48 team double-elimination playoffs in the Traditional Public division! 7-2 Moberly, and 6-3 Hallsville, Orchard Farm A, and Louisiana will start Sunday in the winners bracket and would be eliminated with two losses. The 5-4 teams - Lathrop, Hermann, Pleasant Hill, and Gainesville - would be eliminated with only one loss. Congratulations to these teams!

Records of other Missouri Traditional Public teams missing the playoffs:
4-5: Pilot Grove, Orchard Farm B, South Shelby, Southern Boone, South Callaway, Exeter
0-9: New Bloomfield

Of note:
- Exeter started the day 0-3 before winning 4 of their next 5 games (with the fourth loss coming to South Shelby 205-140) to keep their playoff hopes alive. Their final game was a win-and-in intrastate match against Lathrop; Lathrop easily earned the playoff spot with a 420-135 win. Exeter's top 2 scorers are sophomores and nobody on the team is a senior, so it will be very exciting to see how they improve over the next two years!
- South Callaway, at 4-3 and needing only one more win in their last two games to advance to the playoffs, fell victim to the limitations of the card system and was matched up against 5-2 Drummond in round 10, losing 575-50. Then at 4-4, they were matched up against 5-3 Hallsville in round 11, who won 595-5 to deny South Callaway a spot in the playoffs.

The top 16 players in the Traditional Public division are recognized as SSNCT All-Stars. Based on the posted preliminary statistics, it looks like Missouri students completely DOMINATED the individual standings by claiming SEVEN of the sixteen All-Star spots, including four of the top 10 and all seven in the top 14! No other state will have more than 2 All-Stars in this division!

#3 Samuel Lockwood (Hallsville) - 92.46 points per 20 tossups heard
#7 Michael Powers (Louisiana) - 78.24
#9 Emily Vanhorn (Lathrop) - 74.87
#10 Kale Day (Pilot Grove) - 72.43
#11 Thomas Pointer (Gainesville) - 68.21
#12 Tyler Beauregard (South Shelby) - 64.55
#14 Tyler Woosencraft (Orchard Farm A) - 62.50

The top 6 freshman or sophomore non-all-stars are also named Rising Stars. Samuel and Michael were the #2 and #3 underclassmen and will already be recognized as overall All-Stars. It doesn't look like any Missouri players will be named Rising Stars this year; Benjamin Yoder from Pleasant Hill was the closest, finishing as the #12 freshman or sophomore (#1-3 are All-Stars and #4-9 should be named the Rising Stars), and #60 overall with 39.11 points per 20 tossups heard.

In the Charter and Private division, St. Pius X has advanced to the playoffs of a national championship for the first time ever, going 5-4 in their preliminary pool! Fourteen teams will compete for the title tomorrow in the double elimination playoffs. Valle Catholic finished the day 2-7 in their first nationals appearance.

The top 8 individuals in the Charter and Private division will be recognized as All-Stars, and the top 3 freshman and sophomore non-all-stars will be named the Rising Stars. It doesn't look like any Missouri students will earn these honors in this division. Matthew Kirk (St. Pius X) was the top individual from Missouri at #19 with 41.92 points per 20 tossups heard.

Congratulations to all teams on another fantastic showing at nationals and once again proving that Missouri is by far one of the best places for small schools to excel in quizbowl! Let's bring home some hardware tomorrow!

The brackets are up for the playoff rounds of the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament!

#12 St. Pius X plays #5 St. Martin's Episcopal (LA) in round 1 of the Charter and Private double elimination playoffs. The winner will face the winner of #4 Winchester Thurston (PA) v. #13 Killian Hill Christian (GA); the losers of those two games will still be alive and face each other in an elimination game. The top 8 teams in the Charter and Private school division will take home trophies. Follow along here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =893960194

In the Traditional Public division (bracket):
- #40 Pleasant Hill and #41 Gainesville will face each other in an elimination game. The winner will take card #40 to play the loser of #16 Tazewell (VA) vs. #17 Lakeland (PA); the other will finished tied for 41st
- #36 Hermann plays #45 Evergreen (OH). Winner will play loser of #12 Russell (KY) vs. #21 Maroa-Forsyth (IL); the other will finish tied for 41st
- Cards #27-32 have first round byes in the losers bracket, including #29 Lathrop, who will face #28 Bridge Creek (OK) in Round 2 of the playoffs. The winner will face card #9 in round 3; the other team will finish tied for 29th.
- #22 Louisiana faces #11 Southwestern (IL) in round 1 of the winners bracket. The winner faces #6 Plymouth (NH), while the other team will play the winner of #35 White Cloud (MI)/#46 South Side (PA). Louisiana will finish no lower than t-29.
- #15 Orchard Farm A plays #18 Byron (IL); winner faces #2 Glasgow A (KY); the other plays the winner of #39 Fulton (MI)/#42 North White A (IN). Orchard Farm will also finish no lower than t-29.
- #13 Hallsville plays #20 Glasgow B (KY); winner faces #4 West Point A (AL); the other plays winner of #37 Westmont Hilltop (PA) v. #44 Honaker (VA). Hallsville will also finish no lower than t-29.
- #7 Moberly is the top team without a first round bye, and will play #26 Argenta-Oreana (IL). The winner will play Ottawa Hills (OH) - the winner of their intraschool match between #10 A and #23 B; the other plays Newbury (OH). Moberly will also finish no lower than t-29.

The top 18 teams will bring home trophies, as will the top 6 Very Small School teams. Among very small schools, Hallsville has the fifth highest seed, Louisiana is #7, Lathrop is #11, Hermann is #16, and Gainesville is #19, but the final rankings will be based on how far each team makes it in the overall playoffs and any subsequent Very Small School playoff games.

Good luck to everyone!

I think this is the first time Missouri teams have faced each other in national playoffs! (Unfortunately, it's in a first round elimination game.)

Out of curiosity, other Missouri vs. Missouri scenarios, assuming I read the bracket correctly (first round of playoffs is round 13) - this list generally only includes the earliest round each team could face another Missouri team:

Round 13
- Pleasant Hill v. Gainesville is scheduled

Round 14
- No possible matches

Round 15
- If Orchard Farm and Moberly each win their first two games, they would play each other in the winners bracket, with Orchard Farm holding the #2 card and Moberly still holding #7
- Moberly and Louisiana could meet in the losers bracket with a Moberly L-W (card 26) and a Louisiana W-L (card 11)
- Hallsville could L-W and meet Pleasant Hill/Gainesville in the #17 v. #20 game

Round 16
- Louisiana could meet Orchard Farm or Moberly in the winners bracket #2 v. #3 game
- Hermann would not possibly meet any Missouri teams until this round, where they could hold the #16 card and meet Moberly or Orchard Farm holding the #7 card

Round 17
- Only chance for Hallsville to meet any Missouri teams in the winners bracket (in the #1 v #2 game)
- It looks like Lathrop can't meet any Missouri teams until this round, in which case they'd hold the #9 card and the other team would hold #6

Of course, somehow I missed the #15 v. #22 losers bracket match in round 15, which is happening right now between Orchard Farm A and Louisiana still holding their original cards. Winner advances and finishes no worse than tied for 12th; the other finishes tied for 19th.

Missouri playoff teams in Traditional Public division:

t41 - Gainesville - eliminated by Pleasant Hill 305-150.

t29 - Lathrop - after a bye, lost only playoff game 275-220 to Bridge Creek
t29 - Pleasant Hill - after their win against Gainesville, eliminated by Tazewell 410-110
t29 - Hermann - won against Evergreen 335-65 before being eliminated by Maroa-Forsyth

t19 - Louisiana - lost first winners bracket game 380-150 against Southwestern, won next game 315-155 against South Side, then eliminated by Orchard Farm 320-245

t12 - Orchard Farm - won first winners bracket game 350-260 against Byron, dropped to losers bracket with 490-280 to eventual national champion Glasgow A, eliminated Louisiana in first losers bracket game before losing a close 350-300 game to Raceland-Worthington.

t8 - Moberly - won first two winners bracket games against Argenta-Oreana (370-135) and Ottawa Hills B (250-240) before being dropped to the losers bracket in a 335-230 loss to eventual national champion Glasgow A. Moberly recovered with a 400-165 win over Maroa-Forsyth before being eliminated by Raceland-Worthington 375-210, who has just eliminated Orchard Farm the round before.

t5 - Hallsville - Won first game against Glasgow B before being dropped to the losers bracket by West Point A 370-195. Wins over Dummond (335-255) and Ottawa Hills B (420-200) set up a rematch against West Point A. Hallsville avenged their earlier loss to West Point A with a 315-280 win, before being eliminated with a close 285-235 loss to Macomb.

Very Small School rankings:
#3 Hallsville
t-8 Louisiana
t-11 Hermann, Lathrop
t-19 Gainesville

In the Charter and Private division, St. Pius X dropped their first game 365-275 to St. Martin's Episcopal, the held off a second half comeback from Killian Hill Christian to win their second game 270-245. Pius was then eliminated by Episcopal-Acadiana A 410-225 to be denied a trophy spot, finishing tied for ninth overall.

Congratulations all on another fantastic SSNCT!

It may have been a red-letter day for the Bluegrass State (start the petition to name Glasgow's coach a Kentucky Colonel!), but it was still impressive for Missouri.

Major kudos to the Moberly Spartans!! Two stats popped out this afternoon: Glasgow A's margins of victory were 210, 105, 485, 130, 155 and 310. The 105 was their lowest scoring game, 335-230, to Moberly in Round 15. When factoring in Saturday's schedule, only Glasgow's loss to Danville in Round 9 and their 60-point win against Camp Hill (PA) the previous round were closer, with the Scotties only scoring fewer points in their first match against their loss to the Admirals of Danville.

Additionally, I've just double-checked the rankings and prior appearances: Moberly was the top-finishing public school of any first-time competitor at nationals. One of the moderators told me that the team had nerves of steel. Such a meteoric rise from three years ago when they had competed at districts for the first time in years!

Overall: three Missouri teams with trophies, and two more teams a game shy of that spot. Cue The Waltz!

Whoa, that must have been a big error to make a 9 PP20 difference! Did they give your tossups to a teammate in one round or something? I'll need to go back later this evening and post a correction to the scheduled Facebook post that just went live. Congratulations!

That's exactly what happened. Round 7 vs West Point B, all of my buzzes went to Tyler. :?

That Lathrop game was a heartbreaker - the team was still talking about it on the bus home, and that's after doing our sightseeing on Monday.

I'm really proud of how the team did. We've had a few issues about getting down early in games and tournaments, and they fought hard to keep their playoff hopes alive.

They're determined to get better and get rid of the sting. I told them I'd laminate the score sheet I kept and hang it up in my room as a reminder. I've been pouring over the boards here and the Quizbowl Resource forum for anything I can to help them get better.
