2017 NAQT Missouri Qualifier - March 4 in Fulton

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the tenth annual NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 4, 2017 at William Woods University in Fulton. (Note that this is a change in location from last year's Qualifier.) This tournament has been assigned NAQT Invitational Series #166, which we do not expect to be used at any other tournament in the state this season. We will announce more details and open registration in November. If you would like to attend, we encourage you to complete this short form now to express your interest in the Qualifier. Coaches who complete this form to indicate their desire to attend will receive an advance invitation to register for the tournament before the announcement is publicized to the rest of the state. The Qualifier historically fills very quickly with teams from throughout the state, so we strongly recommend completing the interest form if you are considering attending.

We look forward to hosting teams from throughout Missouri in Fulton on March 4!

We're hoping to have advance invitations out later this week, so if you haven't already, be sure to complete this interest form soon! The initial field could fill with teams invited early, so expressing your interest now will greatly reduce the chance of your team being waitlisted.

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance invites all MSHSAA-registered high school Scholar Bowl teams to participate in the 2017 NAQT Missouri Qualifier, which will be held at William Woods University in Fulton on March 4, 2017. Please note that this is a different location from previous Qualifiers.

The NAQT Missouri Qualifier will use NAQT Invitational Series #166. As of November 21, this question set was not assigned to any other tournament in Missouri. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team has not previously heard this question set and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; a list of tournaments using this set is available on NAQT's website.

Thanks to the substantial interest we received from teams completing the interest form, our initial 24 field has already filled and we have several teams on the waitlist. We have room to host up to 36 teams once we have confirmed enough staff to run a larger tournament efficiently, but will be unable to expand any larger than that. Schools that have not signed up but would like to attend are encouraged to register to join the waitlist as soon as possible to secure a good spot on the waitlist!

For more details about the tournament and a link to the registration form, see the full announcement on our website.

We have expanded to 30 teams! We are planning to expand to our final goal of 36 teams once we have confirmed several more staffers. It's not too late to join the waitlist!

Fun fact: this is not the only NAQT state event taking place in a city named Fulton. :)

After a few changes this morning, we've offered a spot to the last team on the waitlist, which would keep the field at 30 teams. We're excited to see you all in Fulton on Saturday!

Brief results: At the end of the superplayoffs, we had a three-way tie between Washington A, St. Joseph Central and Washington B, setting up a two-stage final. St. Joseph Central defeated Washington B in the first game and moved on to face Washington A, who was seeded first based on points per game. Washington A won that second game to take home the 2017 NAQT Missouri Qualifier championship.

After round 9, Washington A, Rock Bridge B, Washington B, and St. Joseph Central advanced to the superplayoffs, while the remaining championship tier teams played round 10 placement games. Following round 11, Washington A, Central, and Washington B were tied at 2-1; Rock Bridge B was 0-3 and took home fourth place. The three tied teams were seeded based on superplayoff points per game to play a two stage final. Central won the play-in game 320-200 over Washington B to give Washington B 3rd place. Central advanced to play Washington A in the championship game, which Washington A won 410-220 to take home the 2017 NAQT Missouri Qualifier title!

For the small school title, Hallsville A finished in eighth place overall and Louisiana finished in eleventh place. The separation of only three places resulted in an advantaged final between Hallsville and Louisiana, with Hallsville holding the advantage. Hallsville won the first game of the final 285-115 to claim their fifth consecutive NAQT Missouri Qualifier small school title!

We must give a HUGE thanks to William Woods University for providing us the opportunity to use the facilities on their beautiful campus for the tournament. We could not have run a tournament of this magnitude in multiple buildings without the help of the amazing representatives from William Woods University, particularly Brenda Foster and Shaun Speers, whose advance preparation and assistance during the event were critical to the success of this tournament. Everyone there has been incredibly welcoming and accommodating, and we hope all of the teams had a great experience. We can definitely envision returning to the William Woods campus in the future.

Thanks to everyone who staffed and attended and supported this tournament over the last ten years. High school quizbowl in Missouri has changed so much since we hosted the first Qualifier in Rolla in 2008, and we always greatly enjoy the privilege of hosting this event for so many of Missouri's brightest students. We look forward to seeing all of you return to the Qualifier many times over the next ten years and beyond!
