I've seen 2-0 results from 18 sectionals so far. Savannah and St. Pius X is the only contest I know of going to a third game.

Post Re: 2016 MSHSAA Sectionals/State
Class 4 is completely reported.

- Carl Junction is making their first appearance at State!
- Washington returns for their second appearance, twenty years after their first appearance in the first MSHSAA tournament, and looking for their first win.
- Branson returns for their second appearance (first was in 2013) looking for their first win at State.
- Farmington makes their second consecutive appearance after going 1-2 last year.
- St. Joseph Central makes their third consecutive appearance, looking to improve on their close second place finish last year.
- Hickman makes their fourth consecutive apperance (6th overall), with top 3 finishes each of the last three years.
- North Kansas City returns for their ninth appearance, their first since 2013.
- Ladue returns after missing last year for their tenth appearance, with all of their 9 previous appearances resulting in top 3 finishes.

Will North Kansas City or Ladue claim a seventh title to take sole possession of having the most state titles in Class 4, or will one of the other six schools win their first?

Post Re: 2016 MSHSAA Sectionals/State
Class 1:
(North Shelby and Princeton results seen via Twitter)
- Lakeland and North Andrew are making their first State appearances!
- Columbia Independent returns for their second appearance, finishing in second in 2012.
- Bismarck makes their second consecutive appearance after going 1-2 last year.
- Princeton makes their second consecutive appearance (third overall) after finishing in third place last year.
- Polo returns for their fourth appearance after missing last year's tournament, still looking for their first win at State.
- North Shelby returns for their fifteenth appearance after missing last year's tournament. Their highest finish was 2nd place in 1997 and 1998.
- Thomas Jefferson makes their eighteenth consecutive appearance at State, with all but one of their previous appearances resulting in a top 4 finish, including a Class 1-leading 8 state championships.

Class 2:
(College Heights Christian result seen via Twitter)
For the first time in the 21 year history of the MSHSAA State tournament, fifteen-time champion Richland did not advance, falling to Calvary Lutheran in their district championship game.

- Alton, Calvary Lutheran, and Louisiana are making their first State appearances!
- Lathrop makes their second consecutive appearance and third overall, going 1-2 in both previous trips to State.
- Butler returns for their fourth appearance, after participating in the first three MSHSAA State tournaments with a third place finish in 1996 and fourth place in 1998.
- Saxony Lutheran makes their fourth consecutive appearance (5th overall), with first place finishes last year and in 2013, a second place finish in 2014, and a fourth place finish in 2006. If they advance to their fourth consecutive championship game, it will be their first not against Richland.
- South Shelby returns for their eighth appearance and first since 2013. They placed third in 2004 and fourth in 2005.
- College Heights Christian makes their seventh consecutive appearance (10th overall), with five top 4 finishes including 2nd place in 2007.

Class 3:
(All reported to MSHSAA.)
- Springfield Catholic and St. Pius X are making their first appearances at State!
- Houston returns for their second appearance after going 1-2 in 1999.
- Lafayette County makes their second consecutive appearance, looking for their first win.
- Orchard Farm makes their second consecutive appearance (4th overall), finishing in 3rd place last year.
- Hallsville makes their fifth consecutive appearance (8th overall) looking for their third consecutive Class 3 title.
- Priory returns to State for their thirteenth appearance after missing last year's tournament. They have finished in the top three in each of their last 9 appearances dating back to 1999, with four state titles.
- Notre Dame makes their ninth consecutive appearance (13th overall). They finished 4th last year and are looking for their second state title after winning in 2008.

Savannah notably did not advance to State for only the second time since their first appearance in 2000, after two extremely close losses to St. Pius X. The previous time was when they were in Class 4 in North Kansas City's sectional in 2009.

Notes:
- The Notre Dame/West County and St. Pius X/Savannah sectionals in Class 3 appear to be the only two that went to a third game.
- There are 8 schools making their first visit to State [2/3/2/1]
- 13 of 32 schools return from last year's tournament [3/3/4/3], including 2 defending champions, 2 second place teams (both to teams that didn't return this year), 3 third place teams, and 1 fourth place team.
- 7 schools have previously won state championships, including the defending champions in Classes 2 and 3. [8 by TJ; 2 by Saxony Lutheran; 4 by Priory, 2 by Hallsville, 1 by Notre Dame; 6 each by Ladue and NKC]

Peculiar Parochial Pondering... four Catholic schools in Class 3. In a similar vein, two Lutheran schools are in Class 2. All schools in Class 4 are public.

Conference representation, for those curious:
Class 1: Mineral Area, Ozark 7, WEMO, Independent, Tri-Rivers, Grand River, Grand River, Platte Valley
Class 2: Independent, Big Springs/Black River, Spring River Valley, Crossroads, Cooper County, Clarence Cannon, Clarence Cannon, KCI
Class 3: SEMO, ABC, Gateway, Tri-County Central, South Central, Central Ozarks, MRVC, West Central
Class 4: Mineral Area, Suburban Stl East, Gateway, Independent, Central Ozarks, Big 8 (SWMO), GKCSA White, GKCSA Red

Multiple conferences represented (along with three independents)
2 - Central Ozarks, Clarence Cannon, Gateway, Grand River, Mineral Area

Both possible intra-conference matches are taking place in Round 2: Princeton vs Polo in Class 1, and Louisiana vs South Shelby in Class 2. Though in different divisions, NKC and St Joseph Central will face each other in Round 1 of Class 4. Additionally, North Andrew will join the Grand River this fall; they will face future conference foe Princeton in the first round. North Shelby will become an independent next year, but they will not face the other independent school (CIS) in Class 1 during the prelims.

If you can't make it to Columbia and would like to follow along Friday and/or Saturday, you're in luck! As results are turned in to the stats room, I will be updating this Google Sheet.

The Class 2 championship game is between Calvary Lutheran and Louisiana, so the champion will be a first-time attendee!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that during the Class 4 finals between Hickman and Ladue, one of the players gave an answer that contained a short vowel instead of a long vowel, but was otherwise a perfectly reasonable and acceptable pronunciation of the answer. The moderator then refused to uphold the subsequent protest or let it go up to the tournament director, on the grounds that he had never heard the word pronounced that way before. Was this the correct execution of procedure?

Orchard Farm claims their first state championship with a 350-330 win over Priory in Class 3! Defending champion Hallsville took third place with a 390-210 win over Springfield Catholic.

Hickman also claims their first state championship with a 430-310 win over Ladue in Class 4! Farmington takes third place with a 350-330 win over St. Joseph Central.

Congratulations to all!

Here is the MSHSAA rule:
2015-2016 MSHSAA Rule Book (emphasis mine) wrote:
G. PROTESTS
1. All protests must be made by the team captain or coach before the category of the next toss-up question is begun. In the second and fourth quarters, protests of a toss-up question must be made before the category of the bonus question is begun. If any part of the bonus is to be protested, it must be done before the category of the next toss-up is begun. In requesting a clarification of a moderator’s decision or accuracy of the question, the captain or coach must explain the request to the moderator who then refers the decision to the judges. Another team member may indicate to the team captain that a protest is appropriate. The team captain or coach will then indicate to the judges that his/her team has a protest. However, this must be done before the next toss-up question is begun.
2. If a protest cannot be decided by the panel of judges (see Section 8-I-5) in the room, they will refer the protest to the district/state tournament manager. The team captain or coach must then complete a protest card in writing at District, Sectional, or State.
3. If a protest is denied, no further protest in regard to that answer will be heard.
4. Protests not made immediately will have no bearing on the outcome of the game.
5. The tournament officials will rule on all protests (as per #2 above) and their decision is final.
6. Each team is limited to two (2) unsuccessful protests per game. If a team has a second denied protest, that team may not offer any more protests for that game and once made, cannot be withdrawn.
I.5 (emphasis mine) wrote:
5. PANEL OF JUDGES make all decisions on protests and penalties. The panel includes, at a minimum, the moderator, the scorekeeper, and the timer. Extra judges chosen for academic expertise in a particular area may by added. The panel may take a "judges panel time-out" to determine the appropriate penalties.

Based on my interpretation, is the MSHSAA rule seriously that the officials in the room can make a final decision on a protest and deny it from being appealed to the tournament director? There isn't really a problem if the panel of judges in the room makes a decision that both teams agree with, but it doesn't seem like a good idea for the final decision on a protest to rest with a different person depending on what room a team is playing in. That could result in the exact same protest being upheld in one room and denied in another.

Does it change the equation when we add in that Scott Brinker was the moderator?

I was in that room. I was the timer. I did not agree with the resolution of that protest. I got steamrolled by the moderator. I probably should have stopped and shouted my case, but I did not.
