2016 OMAR - Moberly HS, April 2nd

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

On behalf of Coach Kathy Brandon and the members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl, I am again proud to invite teams to the second Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR), scheduled for April 2nd, 2016 at Moberly High School. This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup.
  • Unlike other NAQT/national tournaments, we will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. Incorrect bonus parts shall immediately rebound.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall apply with the following exceptions:
    • Teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds.
    • Math calculation tossups and bonus shall receive ten seconds instead of 15.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 60-second and one-30 second timeout per game. Teams may substitute at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. However, coaches may not confer with their players during a 30-second timeout.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We have secured set IS-153A from NAQT, the provider of the questions for the MSHSAA district and state tournaments. (As of December 20th, this set has also been assigned to Maryville's Spoofhound Classic, invitational tournaments at Strafford and Waynesville, and the Gateway Activities Conference tournament.) As we are seeking to include teams that rarely attend NAQT-style tournaments, we will limit participation to players that did not compete at the 2015 HSNCT in Chicago, 2015 SSNCT in Atlanta, or 2015 PACE NSC in Reston, Virginia. Because of the roster restriction, we do not anticipate any bids for national tournaments being offered.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Cafenasium, with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m. We are currently limiting the field to 18 teams. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $60
  • Additional teams: $55
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
  • All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.
At present we are setting a field cap of 18 teams; this may be adjusted depending on staff availability.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road, best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and myself. I anticipate additional support from members of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/OMAR2016Registration. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at kathybrandon@moberlyspartans.org or Kyle Hill kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “OMAR 2016” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on April 2nd.

We are down to one spot. After the last spot is taken, a waitlist will begin. Expansion of the field is possible, contingent on staff availability.

Owing to the number of teams in Northeast Missouri that have yet to experience 20/20 format, we have suggested to coaches the possibility of dividing the tournament into two round-robin pools sorted by prior exposure and performance in 20/20 tournaments. Barring a dramatic change in the field's complexion, we will go ahead with two round-robin pools of nine teams, with each team playing a bye-game against a team from the other pool. Lunch will remain after round five. If needed, playoff games after round nine will determine the top two places in each division.

Mexico has claimed the 18th spot, and we are at our current cap. However, in light of us going to two divisions, it is very plausible that we could expand to 20 teams (thus eliminating the bye game) or, if additional staff becomes available, 24 teams (which would effectively result in us running two OMARs similar to last year). If interested, please do not hesitate to register for the waitlist.

With registrations from Montgomery County and North Shelby, we are going forward with a 20-team tournament consisting of two 10-team divisions and no crossover bye matches. A waitlist will be taken, again in the event we either have teams drop, or we secure enough staff that we can expand to 24 teams.

With some staff shuffling and additional volunteers, we are able to make one final expansion of the field to 24 teams. Should any of the teams on the waitlist not be able to join the field, we'll welcome additional teams to join the field. We also welcome any team to register for the waitlist in the event future field openings occur. It is very unlikely that we will expand beyond 24 teams.

We've just had an opening in the field. Feel free to sign up if you've been waiting for an opening; it might not last long!

(Update, 16th March, 6:50p) The field is once again full.

We have the initial structure for our two divisions released to coaches. Bold indicates that we have the team's roster. As it stands:

Upper Division
Brookfield
Calvary Lutheran A
Calvary Lutheran B
Fort Osage A
Fort Osage B
Hallsville A
Kirksville A
Mexico
Moberly

Montgomery County
Pilot Grove
Smith-Cotton

Lower Division
Bevier
Hallsville B
Kirksville B
Knox County
Lighthouse Prep A
Lighthouse Prep B
Louisiana
North Shelby
Palmyra
South Callaway
Versailles

(Either Montgomery Co. B, Fort Osage C, or Moberly B, if no 11th hour entry arrives)

I'm already looking forward for April 2nd to arrive - if my count is correct, we will have five schools making their debut at a MOQBA-certified Saturday tournament! See everyone then!

We've had a last-minute drop. If your team has absolutely nothing planned for tomorrow and can pull off a trip to Moberly, get in contact with either Coach Brandon or myself. We do have three schools able to field an additional team.

Stats will be posted this evening after what was an enjoyable and exciting day at Moberly. In case you can't wait:

Omaha (AAA) Division
Hallsville A cleared the field to win first place.
Calvary Lutheran A, Smith-Cotton & Fort Osage all tied at 3-2. Smith-Cotton and Fort Osage played for the opportunity to face Calvary, which Fort Osage claimed. Fort Osage then edged Calvary Lutheran to win second.

Springdale (AA) Division
Louisiana had an opportunity to clear the field, but were defeated by Knox County in the last afternoon pool match. Both Louisiana and North Shelby went 4-1 to force a one-game playoff. Louisiana rebounded from their lone loss to handily defeat North Shelby for the championship.
Their defeat of Louisiana kept Knox County's hopes for a top-three finish alive, as Kirksville B also finished 3-2. Kirksville B beat Knox County for third place.

Firstly I want to extend my gratitude to our tournament help today: moderators Scott Allen, Bob Brandon, Kathy Brandon, David Freitag, Jeffrey Hill, Stephanie Hull, Ginger Leutkemeyer, Allyson Lotz, Josh Malecki, Luke Schuster, Tara Winn and Holly Wooldridge; scorekeepers Elvina Cunningham, Tyler Francis, Tessa Friedman, Amy Smith, Jeremy Smith, Julie Tucker, Jessica Welker, Mercedes from Hallsville, as well as Kaitlin, Ryan, Sarah, Taylor, and anyone whose names I didn't get from Moberly's squad. (Audrey kept score for the two playoff matches in the Omaha Division.) I also want to express my extreme gratitude to coaches Kathy Brandon and David Freitag, principal Zach McMains, activities director Kenny Seifert and the administration of Moberly Schools for allowing us to put together this tournament and expand playing opportunities for teams across Northern Missouri.
