Missouri History Bee and Bowl Tournament- February 8 @ Ladue

Post by christino »

The Ladue Academic Team is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Missouri History Bee and Bowl State Championship on Saturday, February 8th, 2014. While this is a tournament aimed at high school teams, it will be held at Ladue Middle School (9701 Conway Road, Saint Louis, MO 63124) since the high school is administering the ACT.

Also, note that while this is a state tournament, no prior qualification is necessary to enter.

The US Geography Olympiad National Qualifying Exam will also be administered during lunch for $10 per student, and no prior registration is necessary to take the exam.

Format and Rules

History Bowl: While gameplay is very similar to that of quiz bowl, the subject of the majority of the questions will be history. Historically important science, literature, art and geography will also be included, so it will have something for every member of your quiz bowl team. In addition, the History Bowl uses a 4-quarter format slightly different from that of quiz bowl or MSHSAA, with the first quarter consisting of 10 tossups with no bonuses, the second quarter consisting of 8 tossups with one-part bonuses, the third consisting of two 60-second lightning round read to both teams, and the fourth consisting of 8 slightly harder tossup questions with no bonuses. A more detailed explanation can be found at http://www.historybowl.com/game-format/.

History Bee: Each History Bee round involves eight students each playing individually (not part of a team) on a packet with 30 tossup questions. Players aim to answer eight tossups, each worth 1 point, after which they sit out the rest of the match. A bonus score (worth up to 5 points) is awarded depending on how early in the round the player answers his or her eighth tossup. For finals advancement, the cumulative score for each player, tallied over three preliminary rounds, is used. A more complete rules guide is available here: http://hs.historybee.com/wp-content/upl ... -Sheet.pdf.

The tournament will have five preliminary History Bowl rounds, and the teams with the best records advance to a single-elimination quarterfinal, semifinal, and/or final round. The History Bee preliminary rounds will occur during a break in the History Bowl prelims, usually after round 3 of the Bowl. Tournament format guides can be found a http://www.historybowl.com/tournament-format/ and http://hs.historybee.com/tournament-format/.

Nationals Qualification

The top teams in the Bowl and the top students in the Bee will qualify to the National History Bee and Bowl tournament, which will be held near Washington, DC on the weekend of April 26.
For more details, please consult the History Bee and History Bowl websites.

Registration

To register for the History Bowl tournament, visit this page: http://www.historybowl.com/registration/. Please note the staff requirements and the payment procedures. There is no prior registration necessary for the History Bee; on the morning of the tournament, we will ask which of your players will be playing. The cost per player in the Bee is $15.

Note: if you, or another advisor, cannot attend this tournament, but have players who would be interested, please email me, and we can look into waiving the staff requirement. In addition, the advisor does not have to be a member of the school faculty - a parent would suffice.

Questions will be written by High School Academic Pyramid Questions, and History Bee and Bowl questions from previous years can be found at http://www.hsapq.com/samples - just search for "NHBB Regional" or "History Bee and Bowl Regional".

Thank you, and we hope to see you at Ladue Middle School on the 8th! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask
