Post 2013 NAQT Missouri Qualifier - March 2 at Mizzou
The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance would like to invite you to participate in the 2013 NAQT Missouri Qualifier, which will be held on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia on March 2, 2013.

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is an organization dedicated to providing high-quality quizbowl tournaments to all Missouri teams. Visit http://www.moqba.org for more information. As MOQBA's flagship event, this tournament regularly features a diverse field of teams from throughout Missouri, creating a championship atmosphere and recognizing the state's top teams for national tournament qualification. Matt Chadbourne and Jeffrey Hill will serve as tournament directors of this official NAQT event, which will use untimed NAQT rules only modified where necessary to comply with MSHSAA requirements.

The top fifteen percent of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT), to be held in Atlanta, Georgia on May 24-26, 2013, and the PACE National Scholastics Championship, which will be held at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland on June 8-9, 2013. In addition, the champion of this tournament is guaranteed a spot in the 2013 HSNCT, and the top team that had not qualified at any previously-held tournament will also receive a bid to HSNCT. We encourage all teams to participate even if they do not plan to attend a national championship.

Format:
This tournament will be run in the twenty tossup/bonus format on NAQT Invitational Series #124. Games consist of twenty tossups worth ten points each followed by non-rebounding bonuses worth up to thirty points. Tossups will feature "powers" (additional points awarded for correct buzzes very early in the question) and "negs" (five point deductions for incorrect answers before the question is finished).

The field is currently limited to the first 36 teams to register. If the field fills, a waitlist will be formed on a first come first served basis, and we will consider expanding the field to allow more teams to participate. There will not be a separate junior varsity division, but schools are welcome to register multiple teams. Last year's field filled within 36 hours of the announcement and several teams have already registered for this year's event, so we strongly recommend that you reserve your spots in the tournament now.

The tournament will feature a bracketed round robin and playoff, the exact specifications of which will be determined by the final field size. The field will not be divided into small and large school divisions, but the top-finishing small-school team (as well as the top four teams overall) will receive trophies, and an all-tournament team will be recognized.

Pricing:
- Base fee for each team: $55
- Scorekeeper discount: $10 discount for each competent scorekeeper your school brings. Scorekeepers will be provided a lunch.
- Moderator discount: $30 discount per experienced moderator that a team brings to the tournament. We specifically request you let us know about this well in advance of the tournament, and will reserve the right to choose our moderators. If we end up with enough staff, we may not offer this discount. Moderators will be provided a lunch.
- Buzzer discount: $5 discount for each working buzzer system your school brings
- Travel discount: $10 discount for every 100 miles your school travels to the tournament (one-way, as determined by Google Maps)
- The minimum entry fee is $25 per team. (For teams taking advantage of the moderator discount, the minimum fee is $0)

Formalities:
Please email me, Jeffrey Hill (jeffrey@hillonline.net), to sign up for the tournament, and include the number of teams, buzzers, moderators, and scorekeepers you will be bringing. Registration on the morning of the tournament will begin at 7:45. We will have a short team meeting around 8:30 to review the rules. The first round of tournament play will begin no later than 9:00. All teams will be guaranteed at least 9 games, ending around 4:00. Depending on the format, the top 4-6 teams (and potentially the top 2 small schools by NAQT's definition) should anticipate up to 4 additional games.

After the completion of the tournament, each team in attendance will receive a copy of the questions used.

Tournament information, including a list of registered teams, will be updated regularly on the Missouri Academic Competition Message Board (http://www.moquizbowl.com).

We hope to see you and your team in Columbia in March and wish you the best of luck as you compete this season. As always, if you have any questions about the tournament, don’t hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Hill
2013 NAQT Missouri Qualifier Co-Director and Missouri Quizbowl Alliance president

NAQT has changed our set assignment to IS-124, as IS-126 will share questions with the MSHSAA State set. We are the only site in Missouri using IS-124, so this should not be an issue, but please be aware of this in case you were planning to travel to an out of state tournament using IS-124. A list of NAQT set assignments is available here.

It's exciting to see so many teams interested in this tournament! I'd love to give more of these teams a chance to participate, but of course that depends on having enough staff. If you're interested in staffing this tournament, please let me or Matt know as soon as possible.

There have been several changes to the field in the last 24 hours. At this point the field will remain at 36 teams.

Thank you once again for attending the 2013 NAQT Missouri Qualifier. It was a pleasure to host 30 teams for another day of great competition. I hope everyone enjoyed the tournament.

Following the superplayoffs, Ladue A had a 3-0 superplayoff record and Ladue B was 2-1. Ladue A won the first game of the advantaged final 570-190 to win the tournament. Hickman A placed 3rd and Oakville placed 4th.

For the small school championship, Hallsville and Pilot Grove tied with a 1-4 record in championship bracket B and were set to play a one game final, but Pilot Grove elected to concede the small school championship to Hallsville.

Full statistics for the tournament are available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/1218/ (see the Stat Reports section on the right side of the page)

The top 5 teams at this tournament qualified for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, to be held Memorial Day weekend in Atlanta. Because this tournament was platinum certified by PACE, the top 8 teams qualified for the PACE National Scholastics Championship on June 8-9 at the University of Maryland-College Park.
As a result of their strong performances, Ladue A, Ladue B, Hickman A, and Oakville have qualified for both tournaments, and Parkway West, SLUH, Rock Bridge A, and Hallsville have qualified for NSC. Last year, NAQT broke ties across the two parallel championship brackets by overall record, so I believe Parkway West will receive the fifth HSNCT bid with an 8-2 overall record. Small school champion Hallsville also qualified for HSNCT because they finished in the top half of the field. Congratulations to all of these teams! Information about these national tournaments can be found at http://www.naqt.com and http://www.pace-nsc.org, respectively.

This tournament would not have been possible without the assistance of the entire tournament staff, who graciously volunteered their time and did a great job keeping everything running smoothly. Special thanks go to Christina Whelehon from Oakville, Greg Irwin from Rock Bridge, and Diana Harmata from Hickman for volunteering to staff, to Jacob Billingsley for taking care of several logistical details with respect to the tournament site, and to my co-director Matt Chadbourne for his work in making this tournament happen.

Each member of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance strives to provide the best possible experience at every tournament we are involved in running, and I hope this tournament met these high expectations. I appreciate any feedback you may have about the tournament so that we can make future MOQBA-hosted tournaments even better. In particular, I am curious to know how everyone thought the opening meeting went; in the interest of keeping the meeting short, I went through the rules overview rather quickly to the point where I'm not sure how beneficial it was to include the full summary (since I also sent out the summary and full rules ahead of time), so any feedback you have on that would be appreciated.

We are discussing potential dates for next year's NAQT Missouri Qualifier and hope to announce a date in the next few weeks. I encourage you to regularly check our website, http://www.moqba.org, as well as the Missouri Academic Competition Message Board at http://www.moquizbowl.com, for announcements of next season's tournaments.

All the best to each of your teams as you compete the rest of this season.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill
Co-director, 2013 NAQT Missouri Qualifier

I think this is actually the quickest I've had complete stats up for the Qualifier since the tournament moved to Columbia. I do like to get stats up as soon as they're done, but I don't have Internet access on my laptop at the tournament and I don't have a chance to finalize them until after I get back to Kansas City, so I have always finished them on Sunday.

Because Sean Phillips and presumably others think I was being an utter imbecile, I was just mimicking the people who actually post like that immediately after tournaments. Sorry for any confusion.

Please note that we have revised our policy on parallel playoff brackets to rank teams by order-of-finish, not by overall record. Thus Parkway West and SLUH are considered to be tied for fifth and qualify for HSNCT as well.

Revised to reflect NAQT's current policy; an earlier version mistakenly indicated that Rock Bridge had also qualified. See the subsequent posts in this thread.

While it did originally indicate this, NAQT's results page now lists Rock Bridge as tied for seventh and thus unfortunately not receiving a bid - this is technically correct from my perspective since playoff bracket placement was announced to be based on record and then points in the playoffs only, and SLUH's 3-2 record in the playoffs puts them third in their bracket over Rock Bridge's 2-3, fourth-in-bracket finish. I'm guessing the initially reported tie was a result of considering SLUH and Rock Bridge tied for 3rd in their bracket based on their 7-3 overall records. (In my report to NAQT I did not provide an explicit order of finish for the non-superplayoff championship teams mainly because I wasn't sure how NAQT would treat the parallel brackets.)

Thanks for the information on this policy change. Under this policy, assuming the top 5 qualify, if the #3 and #4 teams in one of the two parallel championship brackets were both 2-3, would they be considered tied for 3rd in their bracket and thus considered tied for fifth overall, or would our announced points per game tiebreaker take precedence and only give the 3rd-in-bracket team a bid? We had a similar tie last year in championship bracket B with the #3B and #4B teams both at 1-2, but NAQT broke that tie based on overall record and thus only gave a bid to the #3B team. (The #2B team was also 1-2, but had advanced to superplayoffs based on points per game.)

Update: NAQT's current policy is to rank teams in parallel playoff brackets by within-bracket order of finish, and then consider teams tied with the teams of the same rankings in the parallel bracket. Thus Parkway West and SLUH are tied for 5th (both qualify), Rock Bridge A and Hallsville are tied for 7th (Hallsville qualifies as top small school), St. Charles County Lutheran and Hickman B are tied for 9th, and Pilot Grove and Springfield Central are tied for 11th.

(If anyone from Rock Bridge is reading this: please send us a wildcard bid and we would be happy to have you join us in Atlanta.)

Edit: as Jeff points out below, I forgot about the MSHSAA rule that prohibits wildcards. My apologies.

As noted on NAQT's website, MSHSAA prohibits Missouri teams from taking wildcard bids.

MSHSAA Official Handbook (emphasis mine) wrote:
4.4.3 Season Limits for Scholar Bowl: No senior high school or junior high school shall participate in an interscholastic scholar bowl event before the second Friday in October nor later than the date of the MSHSAA District Competition, exclusive of the MSHSAA state competition, other than the following allowances:
a. A school may participate in an interstate, interscholastic scholar bowl event which may begin no earlier than the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, only if the school has advanced from a qualifying event that takes place during the aforementioned season.
b. A school may participate in one interscholastic event following districts and prior to the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Such an event shall count as one of the school’s allowable regular season events as per By-Law 4.4.2 (Limits on Participation) and must meet the travel regulations per By-Law 4.4.4.d.

This makes sense to me; this is how I ranked the other championship teams in the combined stat report on hsquizbowl. (If you don't break the ties in some way, you could theoretically end up with a situation where you have no ties in one bracket and a 4-1, 3-2, and four 2-3 teams in the other; no tiebreakers would be necessary to determine superplayoff advancement, and the 2-3 teams would be considered tied for 5th, to where if NAQT intepreted it the same way, all six teams in one bracket would get a bid but only three would in the other bracket.)

Though it didn't matter in this case, for qualification purposes, does NAQT automatically use points per game as a tiebreaker within parallel brackets, was the 1-4 tie only broken that way because we announced points per game as the tiebreaker for getting into the superplayoffs, or is that a case-by-case NAQT discretion type situation?

That is exactly why our current policy is the way it is.

Currently these ties are broken at our discretion; we will probably decide on a standardized tiebreaker policy for 2013-14.

Did the recordings of games (such as the Hickman A - Ladue A game in round 12) ever get produced?

I had a four-year necropost in the miscellaneous forum two years ago.

No one still has posted a response in word association to bouncy castle. :(

Back to the resurrected topic at hand... the files are ready to go but are on my old laptop. However, their release is at the discretion of the tournament director, which in this case would be Jeff & Matt.

And for anyone who clicked on this thread thinking the discussion was about this year's qualifier, please refer to this thread.
