Her descriptions of her siblings are amusing.

Todd Akin's "expertise" in human anatomy.
In some St. Louis area mansion, John Brunner is kicking himself for not pouring an extra $2 million into his own campaign.
Absolutely appalling. All of it.

Someone I went to high school with is defending Todd Akin. More appalling.L-Town Expatriate wrote:Todd Akin's "expertise" in human anatomy.

Yikes. Todd said he meant to say "forcible" instead of "legitimate". When I heard "legitimate", I thought "justified".Mickey0R0urke wrote:Someone I went to high school with is defending Todd Akin. More appalling.L-Town Expatriate wrote:Todd Akin's "expertise" in human anatomy.

Why the heck (preemptively edited in the event Prague, OK's school board scours this board) do we still have first past the post? If we did what Arkansas and Oklahoma does for its primary system, John Brunner would be sinking another $7 million of his own money into an August 28 runoff.

Irrelevant to the Akin discussion, a valedictorian quoting Twilight in her speech is pretty terrifying (and not knowing the difference between was/were to boot)!

The thread topic is "Things That Are Terrifying", and I concur: a valedictorian failing to use proper grammar in her speech is hella terrifying.Mewto55555 wrote:Irrelevant to the Akin discussion, a valedictorian quoting Twilight in her speech is pretty terrifying (and not knowing the difference between was/were to boot)!
Then again, it's Prague, OK, and earthquakes generated by fracking in that vicinity last year were terrifying to Kirk Herbstreit.
Re: Things That Are Terrifying
Quoting Twilight is not so much terrifying as really really funny. I imagine she'll be mocked at reunions for years (of course by that point she'll have spent most of her life devoted to writing fanfic based on the characters).Mewto55555 wrote:Irrelevant to the Akin discussion, a valedictorian quoting Twilight in her speech is pretty terrifying (and not knowing the difference between was/were to boot)!
Re: Things That Are Terrifying
Because it's cheaper. Remember MO basically set fire to $7 million for a meaningless primary in March. A subsequent runoff would be another few million at least.L-Town Expatriate wrote:Mickey0R0urke wrote:L-Town Expatriate wrote: Why the heck (preemptively edited in the event Prague, OK's school board scours this board) do we still have first past the post? Re: Things That Are Terrifying
Runoffs would not apply to presidential primaries (which are still set in February). Both parties have discouraged winner-take-all-delegates in recent contests, so runoffs would defeat that purpose.scphilli wrote:Because it's cheaper. Re: Things That Are Terrifying
How 'bout the fact that people like Todd Akin actually get elected to high office?
Re: Things That Are Terrifying
Dude ANY election day (primary, runoff, whatever) costs money. You think all that stuff is free?L-Town Expatriate wrote:Runoffs would not apply to presidential primaries (which are still set in February). Re: Things That Are Terrifying
Of course not, but I'd rather have a candidate achieve an actual majority, rather than skirt to the nomination with a paltry 36 percent plurality. Heck, we had six Republicans run for Northern County Commissioner in Barry County (that's only half a rural county), with no other challengers. The winner received 28.6 percent of the vote, while second place earned about 22 percent.scphilli wrote:Dude ANY election day (primary, runoff, whatever) costs money. However, Missouri already has a well-structured election calendar, limiting elections to six days: the first Tuesday after the first Monday in February, March (limited use), April, June, August and November. We'd only need to add the last Tuesday of those months for needed runoffs. (We also have two separate days in Kansas City through a series of dopey provisions in their post-Pendergast charter that requires the top two candidates in a council race, even if there are only two candidates, to advance to the general election that's one week before school board elections - now THAT's a waste of money.) By comparison, Arkansas' loose structure means county election officials had to prepare for the May 22 primary, June 12 runoff, special elections on June 26, July 10 and August 14, school board elections September 18, school board runoffs October 9, and then the general election November 6 with a runoff on November 27 (because municipal elections also coincide with the general).
Or, we could do what's archaically called a "jungle" primary: throw all the candidates into an August primary, top two from that go to November. This is used in Louisiana, Washington, Alaska and California. However, were this in use this past month, I think we'd wind up with the same two candidates for U.S. Senate, but no personal trainer from Riverside to siphon votes away come November.

Agreed to the first part. As to the second, but if you didn't how would I live? If living is without Zhang?ZhangC1459 wrote:You know what's terrifying? how fast this thread got derailed into a political discussion.
