2010 Pre-Nationals Tournament (5/22/2010) @ MU
Hello everyone!
This year the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to be organizing the first-ever Pre-Nationals Tournament, to be held at the University of Missouri on May 22nd, 2010. This will be the very first tournament ever run under MSHSAA's new rules allowing teams with bids to nationals to play one tournament after districts but before nationals. Due to restrictions, this event will only be open to teams that have already qualified for either the NAQT or PACE national championships. This event is intended to both serve as a chance for teams to play one last tournament of their season, and to give teams going to nationals a chance to get back into the game after the late spring lull in tournaments. I am also looking into the options to run a small solo tournament after this event.
I will be emailing eligible coaches with more specifics, but if you are a coach or player who is interested in this tournament, feel free to email me at CharlesDeesMOQBA@gmail.com.
I look forward to seeing some of you here, and congratulations to all the teams that worked hard to receive bids to nationals!

This tournament will be using the questions from this year's Ben Cooper tournament, written by Georgetown Day School and Vanderbilt University.
The fees are as follows:
$45 base fee for all teams
-$5 for every buzzer system a school brings (maximum 3 per school)
-$5 for every 100 miles a team travels, one way, as determined by Google Maps
-$10 for every competent moderator a team can provide
I will keep an updated field here:
Kremlin-Hillsdale (Oklahoma)
North Kansas City
Parkway Central
Pilot Grove
Rock Bridge
Villa Duchesne

This is epic and we must do it.
Re: 2010 Pre-Nationals Tournament (5/22/2010) @ MU
Agreed. I don't think I have anything going on that weekend, and I'll check with the seniors to see if they do.
Also: I'd probably be interested in the singles tournament. Probably dependent on if my teammates want to drive back to STL or not.

Yeah, sounds reasonable (fees and provider) and aptly timed, since we'll be out of practice for a while by then (MSHSAA stuff doesn't count)
Will probably talk to our coach and team about it tomorrow (since that's after school gets out, so we'd need to organize beforehand)

Singles tourney? As in one-man teams for real?
Lol, I doubt I could do that... It'd be fun to try though

So I don't think my coach is interested. However, depending on when final exams/APs are for me, I would really like to participate. Could I just show up for the singles things afterward?

We got our first batch of registrations, including one from out of state! If you want to join the fun, please email CharlesDeesMOQBA@gmail.com for your registration.
My understanding is that MSHSAA's jurisdiction ends once a tournament ceases to be team based, so if you wanted to travel out to Columbia and only play in the singles event, that is all up to you. If you want to just play that, or just generally have questions, feel free to ask me either in email or in the irc. That goes for everyone, too.So I don't think my coach is interested. b. A school may participate in one interscholastic event following districts and prior to the
Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Such an event shall count as one of the school’s
allowable regular season events as per By-Law 293.0 (Limits on Participation) and
must meet the travel regulations per By-Law 630-d.
Am I crazy in thinking that this tournament could be open to any team who wants to go? I'm not saying don't run it as a qualifiers only event, but the option to open up the field does appear to be there.

I was led to believe that the rule was intended to be for teams that qualified for nationals when it was discussed at the MACA convention, and when I discussed it with other MOQBA members. At this point I am unsure if we would open up the field, but I will for sure check up on the rule so that we can at least know what the rules are for sure.

Nice catch! I must have skipped that section when I read through the changes earlier in the year. I also interpret that as allowing any team to reserve one of its 14 tournaments for a post-Districts/pre-Memorial Day weekend tournament. My prior understanding of the new allowance only applying to nationals-qualifying teams came from an email exchange with Ms. Camp shortly after the advisory committee meeting last June, so the fact that this appears to apply to all teams is a nice surprise.CentraliaCoach wrote:b. For the sake of completeness, here's the full MSHSAA definition of the season from the 2009-2010 Academic Competition manual:
This also clarifies the rule on teams participating in national tournaments to be on Memorial Day weekend or later and not related to when school is out for the summer for a particular school (it previously said the vague "summertime").C. SEASON: No senior high school or junior high school shall participate in an interscholastic academic competition before the second Friday in October nor later than the date of the MSHSAA District Competition, exclusive of the MSHSAA state competition, other than the following allowances:
___a. A school may participate in an interstate, interscholastic academic competition event which may begin no earlier than the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, only if the school has advanced from a qualifying event that takes place during the aforementioned season.
___b. A school may participate in one interscholastic event following districts and prior to the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Such an event shall count as one of the school’s allowable regular season events as per By-Law 293.0 (Limits on Participation) and must meet the travel regulations per By-Law 630-d.

Under that definition, if any national tournament were to start before the Friday before Memorial Day and within 250 miles of the state border, you could play in it as your one post-district tournament.

Just as a notice to teams, after the singles is finished, I will be going to Shakespeare's to eat and invite anybody else who wants to come along and have a sort of quizbowl dinner to celebrate the season ending soon. Obviously I know some of you will have to go to home, but since it will be dinnertime anyway for most of you, if any of you want to stay for that extra hour to unwind, socialize with other quizbowl people, and have some really good pizza, all you need to do is stick around after the tournament and follow me to the restaurant (and bring money for your food).

True, but if one did, then technically it could count. In fact, the HSNCT is within the 250 mile limit, as the rule's spelled out so that the distance is measured "as the crow flies" and not by ground mileage.ashkenaziCD wrote:No such event exists.L-Town Expatriate wrote:Under that definition, if any national tournament were to start before the Friday before Memorial Day and within 250 miles of the state border, you could play in it as your one post-district tournament.

Alright, now that I know what board time it is, I'm sorry Liron, but I'm going to have to say no right now. If somebody decides to drop, then I can have you fill in for them, but I announced in the singles thread that the cutoff would be 8 tonight, and because I have a 12 person field, I can't really afford to increase it because of time constraints.

I don't know, but the whole point of my timechecking post was to compare my board-listed time with the actual clock I have running so that I could make sure it was about 9, so I am 100% confident your board settings are off.

Yeah, it's annoying but it doesn't automatically adjust, I guess since the user settings are a UTC offset and whether or not DST is in effect (since that's simpler than dealing with multiple regions with different DST rules, or something like that). Because of that I've been posting semi-annual reminders whenever DST changes for several years now.ZhangC1459 wrote:Shouldn't it auto-update? I'm still set on UTC-6 for some reason. Imagine that...

Tournament will begin on time, with all six teams present. When stats are compiled, expect team win-loss records. Top 2 teams today will receive plaques.
On that note, I personally want to thank Wayne Ward of U-Win Trophy for being an amazing trophy guy for Mizzou and MOQBA this season and last. His work is high quality, and he is able to get our materials turned around at lightning speed. I ordered our awards for today on Wednesday and he had them ready Thursday morning. He deserves our gratitude for every piece he has made and engraved for us.

Congratulations to North Kansas City! Their strong 9-1 record was a performance that allowed them to win the tournament outright! Rock Bridge placed second, going 7-3, and Villa Duchesne went 6-4, placing third. I was impressed by the teams across the board today, as there were lots of very good buzzes and great performances. I am ecstatic that this tournament got off the ground with such a great showing, and I wish everyone the best for nationals! We will have fuller stats coming soon.

Actually, in that particular game both teams had the same stats (tossups, powers, and PPB) except we had two negs. Kinda crazy...

Because we only had 6 teams, I decided it would probably not be appropriate to give out trophies to half the field, and because there was no third place trophy, I did not feel a need to break any ties. I hope this is not a problem for aybody, but PCH and Villa can say they both tied for third here.

That's perfectly fine (at the very least for me, but I can't see anyone else really minding too much either). Honestly, it makes little to no difference what we placed, I was just curious.
