Fantasy Quiz Bowl

Post by WillHack »

I was reading through an old state discussion thread and the idea of a Fantasy Quiz Bowl League came up. Now, I'm not much of a fantasy person, but I thought this sounded like a great idea. So I've come up with my fantasy team for the NAQT Qualifier 2-21 @ Rolla, based on who I think will have the most PPG.

1. Charles, FHC
2. Zach, Savannah
3. Brandon, NKC
4. Nick, PCH

This assumes that we'll be there (and also, consider that I have no idea who Ladue will be sending).

Anybody else wanna give it a shot?

I don't know about who will actually have the most points, but if I had to pick a fantasy team...

Me
Brandon
Grant
Zach

Oh, will Liberty be there? I didn't know. I trade Brandon, NKC for Spencer, Liberty.

Marc can't go to the NAQT Qualifier because he has an orchestra trip - it'll be me, Jason, and some other people.

Liberty is not going. I was just picking a fantasy team for players I know of. And trading Brandon for me is probably not a great trade.

Well, I would have made a different team if it was just in general. I didn't particularly want to choose between Brandon and Grant in the first place, but oh well. I release Spencer and pick up Jack, Ladue off of waivers.

Depends on if you are trying for high points, or a team that would put up huge points. For example, if your team is already math and science heavy, you'd want Brandon. If you need math and science, go for Grant.

Considering NAQT, not-MSHSAA, distribution, math and science players are probably not the best bet... although more-so than if this was like, PACE, I guess. Assuming we're just going for highest PPG and not actually trying to make a team, I'll take Charles, Zach, Jason, and Brandon.

Science players are just as helped by this distribution as literature and history players, as their percentage in NAQT sets are all equal, so I'm unsure what that comment is about.

Yeah, but the math distribution goes down significantly. I should have just said math players I guess.

Fantasy Results:

Will: 106.43 + 78.57 + 33.33 + 19.17 = 237.5 PPG
Adam: 78.57 + 46.67 + 106.43 + 33.33 = 265 PPG
Me: 106.43 + 78.57 + 65.00 + 35.83 = 285.83 PPG

Yes! I win the fantasy pool. Suckas.

Official top 4:
Charles 106 ppg
Zach 78 ppg
Brandon 65 ppg
Grant 46 ppg

With brandon and me stealing from each other. And this is only through six/seven games. Charles was power champ, 10 champ, and neg champ.

(I can't believe I'm getting into this...)

Hmm, it depends (as someone mentioned earlier) on whether we're going for raw PPG or a well balanced team. If it's PPG:

Me (FHC)
Zach (Savannah)
Brandon (NKC)
Spencer (Liberty)

If it's a balanced team:

Me--Generalist
Julia (FZW)--Lit., Fine Arts, Trash, etc.
Grant--Math & Science
Zach--Generalist

Well, we'll just have to see...

Will there be a small school division? The tournament field is notably smaller than in the past, and I'm not sure the numbers would work out great.

Yes, while the divisions may be slightly uneven, there will still be large-school and small-school divisions.

We should make it more interesting. Maybe pick 8 people instead of just 4?

8 person team
Charles
Zach
Spencer
Brandon
Myself
Julia (I haven't played her, but she got mentioned twice, and I trust Charles to pick well)
Let's go with Adam from Fordland
Jack Chen

I don't know enough about Missouri players to really pick 8, so 4 is better for me.
Charles, Zach, Spencer, Brandon.

Brandon is a better player than me individually, but we work well as a duo, because I know different things than him. By himself, I think he would be up around 80 a game, but I steal from him and he steals from me, so I don't think you can argue against putting Brandon in the top 4. His scores are misleading low because he has me on his team to answer a significant amount, and lower his total.

Uhh...just to note, I picked Julia as part of a "dream team" as opposed to a Fantasy team based purely on PPG--she's an excellent player, but I did want to mention that.

P.S. Will, I'm not from Fort Zumwalt West. :P

Lol, I know it wasn't an insult . . . except I called you a girl! Haha! (my 3rd grade Playground Insults came back into play for a moment there).

Ultimately, though, that mistake probably deserves a spot on the "Epic Fail" thread.

Okay... -_-

By the way, I'm not sure if 8 person teams are really such a good idea for this, since it's not exactly difficult to realize who the top 8 scorers at the tournament are going to be (with a variation of perhaps one or two names) because of previous results.

In contrast, only picking 4 players at least requires a basic understanding of which teams have 1 high scorer and 3 weaker ones (such as us and Savannah) and which have 2 or more high scorers (FZW, NKC, Eureka, etc.). That difference is crucial if we're working with PPG, since a powerful team like NKC might not have the highest PPGs because players take questions from one another.

Yeah, I thought picking 8 people might make it more interesting because most people were picking like the same 4-6 people, so picking more people would add more variance.

Really? I think it actually creates less variance since the top 4 players waver quite a bit...the top 8, not so much.

I'm surprised I made the list and Kevin didn't.

Honestly, I think the best way to see this would be to make this a "two teams against each other in the ultimate MO quizbowl game.... who is on which teams?"

Kevin and I steal alot from each other actually. He always beats me at math, and I can beat him on some Literature and misc. stuff... he tends to get the higher PPG though.

Are you requesting a trade? Because I'm cutting it real close on the salary cap, and I know some guys who'd love to have you on their club. I could probably find room for Kevin, if you feel that remaining on this team is not in your best interests. . . .

Actually...the 1 team vs. the 2nd idea isn't all that bad. If we picked two people as "Coaches" and they took turns picking people, we could actually play a match.

Given that I came up with the idea...does anyone mind my being the first coach? Who wants to be second? (First come first serve)

Robot Wars reference, ignore me.

Quick question first . . . will the winner be determined strictly by adding up your team's total PPG and comparing it to your my team's total PPG?

Also, will we be choosing me-you-me-you-me-you-me-you or me-you-you-me-me-you-you-me?

Here's mine:

Zach, Savannah
Brandon, NKC
Adam, Fordland
Abdullah, Eureka.

Just to note, to offset the fact that good players on balanced (yet superior) teams obscure one another, we're putting a 1.1 multiplier on the PPG of the team which has the players with the highest number of games won.
