2005 MSHSAA State Tournament

Post by DavidH »

I decided to go ahead and start the thread for the big day. I can't believe today was our last organized team practice before state (we practice in the van and at the hotel room). Anyway this will be the last time I can be on the net before Saturday night so good luck to all teams going and I hope it's fun for everyone. (hopefully posting something with a mild amount of substance will end the incredibly crappy streak of threads began lately... just a thought)

Yeah, it's weird having the last organized practice of my high school career. I'm kinda sad but there is still Saturday. I don't think it has sunken in yet that I am graduating in a couple of weeks .... much less that I will be making a speech.... and even less that I will be going to college in a few months.

Well, I'll probably be on again tomorrow before school and during Graphic Design, but I'm going to say this now...

In general, it just seems so much weirder this year. Part of it may be because it came up so fast partly because five days were eaten up by NSB; part of it may be the thought of possibly playing Parkway again; part may be definitely playing Eureka in round 3. However, I know for sure that it's because there's nothing after this. We are definitely not going to a national tournament, so the games the seven of us seniors play on Saturday will be our last (at the high school level, at least).

We could be three games away from disappointment, or five games away from victory... I'm not freaking out or anything, but I'm just slightly "nervous" (for lack of a better word). We are definitely capable of winning but knowing how much harder it was at state last year than I was expecting, we may be in for a big surprise.

Anyway, I should probably stop thinking about it and get through the next day and a half... I hope to see as many of you at State as possible. Good luck to everybody and hope to see the board well-represented in each championship game.

I am riding down and staying with the St. Joe Christian team (how awesome is that?) I hope that MSHSAA doesn't have a gay rule about that too. I'll be everywhere on saturday but i am definitely watching these games:
St. Joe Christian Vs. T.J.
Westminster Vs. anybody
Liberty Vs. anybody
but i'll figure it out more when i get there.

anyway say hi to me. please. i'll say hi back. we might even chat. please let me house sit for you. --chuckles-- that adam sandler...

I wish the MSHSAA schedule listed what teams are playing in each room. I'll be working Class 4 all morning, but I have no idea what teams will be playing in my room.

I can't think of any, but they probably have some stickler. But, if you're a guest of SJC, it shouldn't be a problem.

You might want to check out my "must watch games" list from an earlier post (The "A·C·X" Thread).

We ought to wear signs or something ... hopefully I will run into some of you there and be able to figure out who you are. I think we are getting custom-made shirts by one of the parents and I have no idea what they look like so .... yeaaahh... not sure what distinguishing mark I will have.

Scogs and I will both be wearing shirts we received at CBI Nationals. He'll be with Eureka, and I'll be with Liberty. Then Becky Oakes will need to take note of Truman State's fourth place finish.

Okay, here's what I do remember from the top four:
Class 1: title game was between TJ and St. Joe Christian, but I don't remember who won. Bell City got third over North Shelby.
Class 2: Richland won over Barstow in a game that was closer than I expected. Fordland beat South Shelby for third (by only five points, I think).
Class 3: WCA beat Savannah in a game that wasn't as close as I thought it would be. El Dorado Springs beat Notre Dame for third.
Class 4: I think Liberty won, but I'm not sure. Parkway Central, Eureka, and Helias also made the playoffs.

All I can say is congrats to all and that Liberty's Class of 2005 has set the bar considerably high. Three team titles, national bids for SKB and the Sapphires Dance Team, five National Merit finalists, a state champ in poetry reading, and two Pacemakers.

After looking at the scores on the MSHSAA website, it seems as if scores are down this year, especially in class 2. In the morning rounds, there were only 5 games where a team scored over 500 this year. Where the questions harder than last year?

Someone verify this...

In the Liberty vs. Eureka game, we had nine members of this board in the room. (Melissa, Scogs, TMCE, Jeff, Marie, Caitie, John, Alex, and myself) Can anyone top that (no, coaches or officials meetings don't count!)

Actually, I was the one who passed you while you were talking to David after you'd beaten Parkway, patted your shoulder, and said "Nice going, Jeff." Sorry, I should've formally introduced myself.

Good point.

Anyway... I can somehow see why Kyle was for once in his life speechless when we had the press conference for winning state two years ago. I don't know exactly how to say how I feel right now. Our last three games were tough but we gelled well together as a team, seeing as how Ryan and I got 62 and Michael got 70. Take any one of us three out and we might have been in trouble. I was actually quite surprised that I made All-State... 5.4 is kinda low, although Chalsey only had two more tossups in 2003 to get the eighth spot. Ryan definitely had an "on" day...

I'm sure everybody was extremely surprised at the margin of defeat between us and Parkway... I wasn't expecting it to be even half that much. What a wonderful way to end the season... for some reason, I think Helias was our hardest game.

Now that there's no way any "voodoo mickey mouse crap" can change anything, I will say that we have not been defeated in a buzzer competition in the calendar year 2005. We lost to Savannah once at Maple Woods but that was a worksheet-type format.

Well, Jeff, as I helped sort out the All-Staters, I'll tell you there were two people who averaged 5.33 and two more who averaged 5.0 (I think), so you literally did just squeak in. Anyway, enjoy your team and individual medals; you earned them.
