Hello, everyone! I'm pleased to announce that we will be hosting the St. Louis Open at Washington University in St. Louis on June 28th 2014. I, Charles Hang, will be serving as the Tournament Director, and can be reached at charleshang228@yahoo.com.

The tournament will feature both an academic and a trash component, details of which are below.

Questions

The academic tournament will be using the IMSANITY set.

We will be using the Ottawa Hybrid set for the trash tournament.

Registration

To register, please e-mail me at charleshang228@yahoo.com. Please indicate the following information:

1/ The Number of teams you will be bringing.
2/ The Number of buzzers you will be bringing.
3/ The number of players you will have, as well as their names.
4/ The number of staff (moderators and scorekeepers) you will be bringing.

Please register separate teams for both events and let me know if staffers will only be staffing one or the other event.

Please form up and register a team before the event.

Fee Structure

Academic Tournament:

Base Fee: $20 per player on your team.

There's also a $4 per person charge if you want pizza (please pay this in cash)

Buzzer Discount: -$10 per working buzzer
Moderator Discount: -$10 per moderator
Scorekeeper Discount: -$5 per scorekeeper

Minimum Fee: $20.

Trash Tournament:

$10/player

We are, of course, willing to make accommodations if a team has trouble paying and wishes to arrange a payment plan, etc.

Please make checks out to "Washington University Academic Team;" we can also take cash payments but greatly prefer payments by check.

Eligibility

Anyone can play this on any team. We would greatly prefer if you don't form “super-teams” for this tournament, given the nature of the field and the level of the questions.

Location

This tournament will be held at Washington University in St. Louis, in the Danforth University Center (Building 28 here).

The building address is:

6453 Forsyth Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63130

Parking is plentiful.

Time

We will begin at 9:00 in room DUC 234. Please show up by 8:30 for this tournament, or get in touch with me if you know you can't make it on time. Once you register, I'll send you a confirmation with my phone number for contact purposes.

We expect to finish the academic tournament before 4:00 PM, at which point we will have dinner and begin the trash tournament, hopefully within half an hour. We will end the tournament by 8:00 PM (which is when the building closes).

Tournament Format

Our precise schedule depends on how many teams we will have in attendance and will be finalized a few days beforehand. I plan on targeting 8-10 games (preferably closer to 10) and ending before 4:00 PM to give us adequate time for the trash tournament.

In order to maximize the amount of time available for Quiz Bowl, we will be ordering pizza for consumption between the academic and trash tournaments. As mentioned above, pizza is $4 per person.

For the trash tournament, we will try to get through as many rounds as possible before the building closes at 8:00 PM; an exact schedule will be also determined once we know how many teams will be playing.

If you're coming to this and can bring buzzers, that would be greatly appreciated. We currently have just enough buzzers for the current field, so additional buzzers would be quite helpful as backups or if the field expands.

I am assuredly a horrible player at this point, but I'm a free agent for both events. If anyone's still looking to fill out a team, let me know.

Since this event is a week from today, I would greatly appreciate it if people would start registering soon so we can get a final count of teams.

Also, if some of the teams of 1 and 2 could combine to help with our staffing situation, that would be appreciated.

Since 6 teams is perfect for the hybrid tournament in terms of scheduling and staff, I'm going to close registrations for that. If you still want to participate and can bring a moderator, let me know.

We still have one opening for the academic tournament, or more openings if teams bring additional staff.

Also, if any of the academic tournament teams would be willing to divide to give us an 8th team, please let me know.

The spreadsheet is now updated with the most recent information I have available. If there are any mistakes, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll create a schedule tomorrow and send it to all of the teams with invoices.

Hey, I guess I forgot to note on the spreadsheet that I'm a free agent for the hybrid event too - if there are any teams still looking for players, let me know.

I've updated the initial post with where we're meeting this Saturday (DUC 234).

I still don't know the final schedule yet, since the number of teams for the academic tournament is still in flux. If we have 6 teams, we will have a double round robin and advantaged final (10 games guaranteed). If we have 7 teams, we will have a round robin, followed by a split into a pool of 4 and a pool of 3. Teams will play a round robin within their playoff pools (9 games guaranteed for the top pool, 8 for the bottom).

For the hybrid tournament, we unfortunately seem to have lost our third staffer, so we're going to have to have a 7 team round robin with bye teams staffing on their bye rounds. If we can get a third staffer, then we will simply have a 6 team round robin, with the possibility of additional games if we have more time.

Along those lines, if you're available for the hybrid tournament, we would be extremely grateful if you can staff.

I will send out schedules, invoices, and other information once I get a final confirmation of some team compositions; I plan for that to happen by tomorrow afternoon. If you have any questions in the interim, feel free to email me at charleshang228@yahoo.com.

Also, a brief note--the hours for the building we'll be in have changed since 2012; it now closes at 8, so we'll ending the tournament then instead of 9 as in the past.

The academic tournament schedule can be found here; the hybrid tournament schedule is here. The listed rosters reflect the spreadsheet as it currently stands, so if you want to make any changes (such as, say, adding a team name), you have a couple of hours to let me know before I go print them.

Also, I'm going to authorize one team of 5 for the hybrid tournament. I'm doing so since I want to make sure everyone who's signed up gets to play, and I can't think of any compelling reason against the idea. If anyone has one, they're welcome to let me know.

So I've been sick all night and probably am not going to make it to the tournament today. Sorry for inconveniencing people.

This is occurring as we speak. Statistics for the academic tournament are here; statistics for the hybrid tournament will be here once they are available.

Malkot ha Makolet (Itamar Naveh-Benjamin, Jared Lockwood, Adam Sperber) won the academic tournament, going 10-0. Ben Zhang was the top scorer with 152 PPG.

There was a three way tie for 1st in the Hybrid tournament between Unnamed (Ben Zhang, Sean Phillips, Itamar Naveh Benjamin, and Andy Walz), Trochaic Tetrad (Alex Dzurick, Jared Lockwood, Dylan Randolph, Adam Sperber), and Straight Outta Compton Scattering (Jacob O'Rourke and David Dennis). Unnamed won by PPG. Jacob O'Rourke was the top scorer with 70 PPG.

Thank you to everyone who attended! Thank you also to everyone who staffed (Nick Bergeon, Kisan Thakkar, and especially Gordon Arsenoff and Marshall Mullins, who staffed all 15 rounds)! We couldn't have done it without you.
