Well, at least here at Mizzou, it's time to start signing up for next semester already. I don't have an official enrollment date until next Wednesday, but I believe I've basically picked out what I'm taking:

MONDAY/WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY:
9:00-9:50 ----- Anthro 2100H ----- Indigenous Religions (Kelley)
11:00-11:50 -- Ling 4620 ---------- Regional and Social Dialects of American English (Gordon)
12:00-12:50 -- Phil 4210 ----------- Philosophy of Mind (Robbins)
1:00-1:50 ----- Soc 2200 ----------- Social Inequalities (Hermsen)

This leaves my Tuesdays and Thursdays completely open for substitute teaching. Also, I fulfill my requirement of having 2 honors classes a year for the first two years, and the only thing it leaves me to do in my general education requirements is to take one more social science course in some subject that isn't history and also take a writing intensive class.

I'm happy with this, so assuming these classes are open, it's what I'll do. The only thing I would even consider changing is switching the Anthro 2100H class to Classical Humanities 1060H, which is Classical Mythology. That leaves me with needing a ton more requirements later on, so I'd much rather take Indigenous Religions. It also fulfills 3 hours of my 15-hour Multicultural Certificate requirements, which is something I'd like to get in addition to my degree.

Tentative Schedule (If any different, there could be one more Bio grad class)

ED 608G Management of Instruction
ED 593 Psychological Foundations of Education
BIOL 503G Evolutionary Biology
BIOL 511G Environmental Physiology of Animals with Lab

I need to take Microbiology but it doesn't look like it will fit in the schedule...this isn't really an ideal schedule for me since I am not really a fan of the teachers of these BIO classes and am unsure whether they will keep me interested in otherwise interesting subjects....we'll find out.

AP Computer Science

Nice to see someone actually has real computer science classes... when I was at Liberty they had one programming class in the catalog, I went through two semesters of Microsoft Office-oriented computer classes to get to it (though admittedly I learned a few useful things about it in the process), and it was canceled because only 2 people were interested. What do you go over in AP Computer Science, anyway?

--EDIT-- Just found Liberty's catalog for this year. Still no programming class but they do have a network administration class that works toward CISCO certification (though this is more IT than Computer Science). The Business department also apparently has a Sports Entertainment Marketing class.

As far as I can tell, AP Computer Science is concerned with the more complicated aspects of Java.
That's what is covered as far as I can tell at SLUH.

My AP Comp Sci course started off with a couple of weeks in Alice, a program designed for a smooth transition into Java. Then, we did a bit on ethics and the founding fathers and mothers of computers. Since then, we've been full-speed-ahead into Java.

(Not that anyone cares, but everyone else was posting stuff, so...)

Independent Study :D (SciOly/Engineering stuff)
AP English Lit/Comp
AP Physics (fun class, only 10 people, and we're all good friends)
Latin V
AP Calc BC
AP Biology
Crime & Law (to replace AP US History, because it bored me to death)

Nothing particularly exciting/different, but we don't really have a huge selection of good classes that are both interesting and challenging/academically worthwhile. So, me and my friends (and anyone senior who isn't taking all blow off classes) tend to gravitate to the same classes, more or less.

People from elite public high schools with many more interesting classes than most schools shouldn't post deprecating statements about their school curricula... :D

At the very least, we never had Latin (at my middle to upper middle class public high school).

Post subject:  Re: Class schedules for next semester

Yeah, I mean, what passed for "hard/challenging" classes at my high school were classes like dual-credit American History, English Comp, Calculus, and Anatomy/Microbiology. So Latin, Crime & Law, Computer Science, and any Physics class that is actually worth its salt would have been simply amazing to me.

Notice none of those that I mentioned we had are prefixed with AP. So I didn't even have the luxury of that to perhaps, possibly, increase the academic potential of my classes. I took what would be regarded as a very difficult schedule at South Callaway that would only be somewhat challenging at a larger, more prestigious high school.

To be fair, a lot of classes like this one are more or less blow-offs dressed up to look much more interesting than they really are. Notably, my You and the Law class was largely me regurgitating textbook descriptions of cases (which I, unfortunately for Quiz Bowl purposes, promptly forgot). Utterly characteristic of the class was winning a Student of the Month award for "the best paper [my teacher] had seen in many years," a work that was one and a half pages long and written in thirty minutes at 2:30 AM.

Probably true, but compared to a lot of other [public] schools in our immediate area, we're pretty small, so we have neither as many teachers to teach a lot of different classes, nor as many students interested enough to sign up for a lot of classes.
Plus, a lot of the stuff that sounds good (economics, crime & law, intro to computer science, business management, integrated computer literacy) are really, as Charles pointed out, just glorified blow off classes, especially for anyone who has the capacity to take even semi-rigorous core classes.

(When I'm talking to people here I always forget that Missouri is almost entirely rural. Or at least as much as the boonies of St. Charles  )

3. AP Physics: B
4. Academic Lab (Study hall on B days)
5. Accounting I as a blowoff class
6. AP Calculus AB

You sign up for classes a little bit before orientation. I think it's in early August, if I recall correctly.

Check out this: http://firstyear.wustl.edu/Pages/default.aspx for more information. This should have everything you need to get ready for the upcoming year.

Right--it depends on which school you're with. Engineers sign up earlier, ArtSci people later; I imagine there are additional policies for the other schools (which appear to be available on the website I linked to)
