Let's play the Power Game!

Post by Francesco Borromini »

OK. For those who don't know what a "power" is, it's a question which someone answers with a very obscure clue or small number of such. I just want to see who can answer questions like such. Feel free to post your own; I just thought of this Q today:

It's is from the final round of the PCH tournament, WCA vs. Eureka. Arthur got the points for Eureka by answering this:

Category: Science.

Not to be confused with the study of word origins...

One that will never be forgotten among current Truman ACO members:

"She co-wrote an episode of Star Trek with her husband Jeremy Tarcher." [sp]

The best power I can remember at the moment was one word: "Humbert"

The best power I ever answered was in my few weeks as a member of Truman's academic team. It began, "Her dancing career ended with a knee injury . . . " The answer is Leni Riefenstahl, a female director who made propaganda for Hitler. I'd written a huge paper about her the year before.

George, I remember that question and I got it at about the exact same spot.

Though, I think the phenomenon occurs mostly when you've heard a similar question at practice or a different tournament and have that im your mind somehow, I know that's happened to me on several occasions.

Lolita was the answer to that one I posted above... it's not so much that the question was hard, but the speed and reflexes to buzz in after the first word.

Another one I thought of today: "He's not from New Orleans..."

Not Emeril, I'll post the answer tomorrow if no one comes up with it by then. I think we were playing Richland when this came up, but I wouldn't swear to it.

The answer was Ernie Els, referring to his nickname, "The Big Easy."
