Fall Rankings

Hey all!

So I know Kyle Hill does his events based rankings for his radio station but I'd been toying with the idea of doing one better. Being a giant tennis freak (No foolin, my handle on goldderby.com the go to for all things pop culture is "tennisfreak".), I stole almost wholesale the ATP Rankings method and applied it to quizbowl based on order of team finish. Points are assigned based on finish, not games won, and the larger the event, the more points are allotted. For example:

Events of 12 teams or fewer: Winner receives 250, runner up 150, third and fourth place 90, fifth through eighth 45, remainder 5.
Events of 13-18: Winner 500, runner up 300, third and fourth 180, fifth through eighth 90, ninth through twelfth 45, remainder 5.
Events of 19-24: same as 13-18 except teams 13-16 get 20 and the remainder 5.
Events of 25-36: Winner 1000, runner up 600, third and fourth 360, fifth through eighth 180, ninth through twelfth 90, thirteenth through eighteenth 45, nineteenth to twenty-fourth 25, remainder 10
Events capping at 48: Winner 1500, runner up 900, third and fourth 540, fifth through eighth 270, ninth to sixteenth 135, seventeenth to twenty-fourth 75, twenty-fifth to thirty-sixth 40, remainder 15.

So as you can see participation is rewarded but so are results from going deep in deep fields. Only a school's best team result is counted (no double dipping or if you're Ladue quintuple dipping) and events that use non single elim playoffs with fields that don't have age, geographic, or performance restrictions are counted (so no jv events, conference events, or winter invitationals). The fall rankings are as follows:

1. Hannibal (5 events) 2800
2. Marquette (2) 1800
3. Washington (3) 1480
4. Hickman (3) 1160
5. Hallsville (3) 900

Several years ago, I had proposed doing a point system for MOQBA events identical to the old NASCAR points system. By that, I mean the points system that was used before the current Chase for the Cup nonsense (this system was used 1975-2003). The system worked as follows:

Winning a race: 175 points
2nd through 6th deducted five points for each spot, down to 150 points for 6th place.
7th through 11th deducted four points for each spot, down to 130 points to 11th place.
12th to 43rd deducted three points for each spot, down to 34 points for 43rd place.
(Officially, anything below 43rd is a deduction of 3 points per spot, but NASCAR has never attempted this.)

Five bonus points for leading a lap.
Five additional bonus points for leading the most laps.

So I decided to apply the same criteria to this points system to see what would happen. A few notes on how I did this:

If placement games did not break a tie for position, I broke ties by PPB.
I awarded five bonus points to a team that qualified for NAQT and/or PACE (only one award per team per tournament).
I awarded a separate five bonus points to the team that had the highest PPB at a given event.

This awards not only participation (which we should encourage in any event) but also consistency. I always felt consistency over a longer period of time was a fairer way to determine a winner. The one problem is that teams that go to more tournaments will have more points, but as I got further along in my calculations, this advantage was negated to some extent.

Following Sean's example, the top 15 teams would look like this (I initially included B, C, and subsequent teams):

Hannibal A 890
Tuscumbia 555
Hickman A 535
Wellsville-Middletown 531
Washington A 520
Pilot Grove A 519
Rock Bridge A 515
Hallsville A 500
Orchard Farm A 500
Helias A 475
Washington B 470
Fort Osage A 388
Moberly A 374
Marquette A 360
Fort Osage B 351

If B, C, etc., teams are excluded, the top 15 would be:

Hannibal A 890
Tuscumbia 555
Hickman A 535
Wellsville-Middletown 531
Washington A 520
Pilot Grove A 519
Rock Bridge A 515
Hallsville A 500
Orchard Farm A 500
Helias A 475
Fort Osage A 388
Moberly A 374
Marquette A 360
Ladue A 350
St. Pius X 312

I was amazed at how close it was from 2nd down to 9th (only a 55-point spread). At some point, I want to go back and calculate full standings.

Fred Morlan just released his rankings for the first semester on hsquizbowl.org. He mostly goes by team PPB, so here are the highlights (you can find the complete rankings here).

Hickman A: 43rd
Hannibal A: 64th
Rock Bridge A: 87th
Washington A: 176th

Congratulations to all of the teams who made the rankings! And remember, Fred only does this to try and help teams; he's not trying to insult your playing ability with your ranking.
