Missouri Quiz Bowl 2012-2013

Next season is an interesting one to me for several reasons. Ladue is still the best team in state by a large margin (since they didn't graduate anyone!), but several other programs, such as Savannah, Helias, and Rock Bridge to some extent* are all going through rebuilding years. To me, there is a wide-open door for teams that want to make an immediate jump into contention in Missouri.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

*I say to some extent because Salah has become a pretty good art player, and you can't discount transfers and people improving through summer practices. Also, both the teams for Helias and Savannah could blow people completely out of the water if they work at it hard enough.

If Clayton plays more they should be able to cement being #2 in the state again, as they return Alex, who is very good already, and some solid B team people. Itamar from Hickman has been improving a lot and will be able to do very well this year, especially if he gets his teammates to improve. The returning Rock Bridge players are all doing just peachy in the summer practices at MU, since they had a very deep bench compared to every other team last year. Rock Bridge also is getting Joe, Jacob, and Ashwini from CIS, and at least 1 kid coming in from West has come to a practice, so I think they'll continue to have a very deep bench and should be plenty good to get multiple teams in playoffs all the time and win some tournaments again. NKC retains lots of scoring, and they had a decent B team, so this will probably be their best year in a while. Also, Ladue B is going to be really good this year. Oakville should be doing good with Michael back, along with some of his teammates. Parkway West returns pretty much all of their good players, and their best player Amos will be a sophomore, so I think they could get a lot better if they work at it. It looks to me like this year will be just as competitive as last year, especially if people from other teams start working to get even better. It's very easy to become top tier in a short amount of time in Missouri.

Also, Ladue was already the best team ever in Missouri this year. The devastation they should wreak with this astoundingly good team all season long will be unheard of.

I'm also going to try and get Kirksville to attend more tournaments (other than Truman State's and Rock Bridge's), as these kids have the talent to be a top 10 team in state.

I fully expect Itamar to help pull Hickman into the Top 5 in the state next year (especially if he can convince his teammates to study).

I also think Hickman and CIS could be strong sleepers. Everyone should be on notice.

Prediction:
Though starting out slow, Hickman starts duking it out with Clayton for the number 2 seed come January or so, with NKC, Ladue B, and perhaps Parkway West close behind. All this hinges on Itamar putting together a solid A team and getting the rest of them to study a lot. Call it a bias, but I think Hickman can end the year as a solid second.

Ballsier prediction: Ladue places in the top 2 in both nats, winning at least 1. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon by saying this; I remember when Ladue stunned everyone two years ago by going 8-2 at the HSNCT prelims led by a sophomore and knocking off what became the current Dorman A in the playoffs. Fast forward a year later, and...you all know the rest. Even if their development isn't perfectly linear, it'll still be enough to clinch at least one national title.

Who among us was stunned by Ladue going 8-2 that year?

Yeah no, the only people stunned were people reading Fred Morlan's wildly inaccurate ranking of them.

"Fred Morlan's wildly inaccurate ranking of them" is also known as "Fred Morlan's usual ranking of just about anyone" for those at home who don't know any different. Seriously when he actually shows up to anything in Missouri and sees our kids, I'll maybe give his rankings a scintilla of respect, but probably not much.

Ladue B yeahhhh

So the season's started. Hickman did very well this weekend too; I didn't see them play, but they seemed to have comparable stats to Clayton & Ladue B. My money's on those three in a three-way slugfest for 2nd-4th, at least until one of them really puts their nose to the grindstone.

If I were to make a ranking right now, based on the statistics, I would place Hickman second, Ladue B third, Clayton fourth, and NKC fifth, followed by Oakville and Parkway West in some manner.

Hickman yeahhhh

Honestly, as soon as they can get a solid 4 on their A team at a statewide non-NAQT tournament (Tiger Bowl) we should get a better picture of comparisons. And by the same token, Hickman B might end the year in the top 10 if they can get a solid 4 set. I'm looking forward to the stats they put up on a solid housewrite (MSU/UD) at Centralia soon, though I don't believe the teams will be set as what will end up as HHS A, B, C.

EDIT: Actually, that would be a terrible, terrible idea.

So wow, Hallsville B is very good -- their prelim PPB this weekend was 4th highest there (behind Ladue A/B and Hickman, and ahead of NKC, Oakville, and sans-Alex Clayton!). I could definitely see them placing very highly at nationals and making a run for the HSNCT small school title in a year or two.

I've been very impressed with how good some of the B teams in the state are. Definitely right now, Ladue B and Hickman B are top 10 teams (in state), and Hallsville B is going to contend for the small school final in another year or two.

If I had to do a ranking, this would be how I would do it:
1. Ladue A
2. Ladue B
3. Hickman A
4. Clayton A (they put up some solid stats last weekend without Omkar and Alex)
5. NKC A
6. Hickman B
7. Parkway West
8. Oakville
9. Rock Bridge A
10. SLUH A

Teams who could break in: Kirksville A, Priory, Jefferson City, a lot of other teams

EDIT: Hallsville A and B should be in the picture there somewhere. I can't believe I forgot them.

I'd have to slightly disagree. I'd put the top teams as follows:

1) Ladue A

2) Hickman A
3, 4) Clayton A, Ladue B (too close to call)

5 to 8 ) Hickman B, Rock Bridge A, NKC, Hallsville "A" (too close to call)
9 and on) Parkway West, SLUH, Oakville, Hallsville "B"

My reason for exchanging the second third and fourth slots (without bias), despite Hickman's loss to Ladue B at Tiger Bowl, is because Hickman has never played a tournament with a fully stocked A team this year (which isn't good, I know) yet continue to put up better prelim stats and PPB than Ladue B. Putting Clayton along with Ladue B might seem almost as ballsy, but if they made that much progress on Ladue B without their two best players then I feel like with them they'd be more than capable of a victory. (Though I do wish Mukund had been at Tiger Bowl.) I wouldn't either count them out to rise a slot by the end of the year as well (Itamar, get crackin'). I also believe that Hallsville's B team is the superior of the two teams based on what I've seen on the DB, though an amalgam of the two would have a clear shot at the top five. As for now we can only speculate.
Finally, with the next three, they all seem to show quite good potential, but it probably just depends on the packet played. As things stand there's no way of calling it. Again, I really wish Hickman would be able to just decide on and bring their two top solid teams of 4 (though a lot of it is just unfortunate activity conflicts).

Sorry for editing this thing to heck and back. I just kept getting second thoughts.

I would argue that a team is hypothetical until it actually exists, and you shouldn't rank hypothetical teams over teams that have results in real events. Also though, Hickman A had all 4 A team players in the playoffs at MFAT, so you can in fact rank them by that criteria.

They still played it as a team of 5.

If you're seriously making that argument then you're just being silly and stubborn.

Whooooo quizbowl!

I guess this would be a good thread to just thank everyone in MOQBA for all their work in the past N years, for some number N greater than 4. Quizbowl has been by far the most fun and rewarding activity I did throughout high school, and if it wasn't for y'all, I'd still be a comp math specialist on Ladue's MSHSAA team or something silly. I know if I tried to single out the individual people involved, I'd miss a few and not do justice to the ones I did mention, so once again, just a huge thanks to everyone who made Missouri quizbowl what it is today.

Also, lest people forget, Charlie Dees is always right.

Also also, great job to all the teams who played tournaments this year! Most of you were not around in 2009 and don't remember what it was like, but all of you would totally steamroll the field at 2009 MFAT! Best of luck next year, and keep getting better!
