RESULTS:
Divison I (Large Schools):
First place -- Liberty
Second place -- Northside (Arkansas)
Divison II (Small Schools):
First place -- Lexington
Second place-- Mound City

Overall, it was a good tournament, a few glitches and some repeats, but nothing too bad. For those who played, what did you think of the questions??

Obviously I didn't play, but from what I gleaned:

-Some answers were missing additional information. "Stonewall" was not Gen. Jackson's first name - probably should have included Thomas. (At least you didn't require the middle name like that one dumb question at either Chillicothe or Lexington.
-Variety was weak in a couple areas. For instance, both geography questions in Round 3's First Quarter were "name this Asian island."

Aside from these sticklers, these were well written and to the point. Wonderfully done, and again, you ought to be hired to write questions for suburban conferences!

Dude, you're way critical. It went well. Liberty played awesome with the exception (acception?) of the beginning of the Northside match but I think that was just nerves cuz you guys kicked butt after that.

Irate copy editing mode must be making its way back in. Probably need a few less term papers to stave off.

The tournament in general was wonderful. Excellent teams as always, well-stocked hospitality room, questions that rank vastly superior to Avery, Questions Galore, QQQ, Patrick's Press (in several instances), etc. etc. House-generated questions, particularly those by powerhouse schools, are often the best since they know what other kinds of questions will come up in other tournaments... and they can slip in their favorite pop culture references and political motives.

As for critical... you should have seen me last year after the whole lightning round debacle. Boy was I letting Jeff have it. (This year I just merely admonished him for placing six calculation tossups in one quarter.)

Wow. Do I even have to address that? I seriously doubt anyone gives a crap about Stonewall Jackson's first name, considering that first names suffice in most every tournament. And I apologize for not being more creative in my grammar choices, but how else do you tell someone they need to name an Asian island? "What Asian island . . ." Whatever, I still got paid.

I guess I sound bitter and I probably am. Reading ten rounds takes it out of you, especially when teams, spectators, and coaches get pickier as the day wears on. Like a coach whose team wasn't even playing and advised me on procedure for a missing answer during the middle of a match. He also called me "ma'am" which I hate dearly. The same coach must've thought I was just some dumb high school student, because he also kept coming into tournament central and telling me to write down scores on the brackets. Please, if you're in the audience, keep your mouth shut. And do not interrupt the moderator to tell them to speak louder when the team your son/daughter is on has barely scored 100 points. Maybe next year I'll just write the questions but not moderate, or just moderate a few rounds, because I have better things to do on a Saturday than get harped at over pointless stuff.

So if you respond please just say if the questions were too easy or too hard, or what you liked or disliked about the CONTENT, not some inane point. And yes, I know one round had a lot of repeats, we had a mix-up with one of the rounds and it was not by Maverick.

Oh, and I think I had an even number of Democratic and Republican references (hell, I had Newt Gingrich as an answer, that made my bleeding heart shiver). And hey, how can anybody complain when there's a Napoleon Dynamite question?

I didn't realize out-of-state teams could participate in Missouri academic tournaments. Ya learn something new every day.

How did all the other teams fare?

They can't...... But one thing I have learned dealing with MSHSAA and Quiz bowl. Is they could care less about what happens in the quiz bowl world, and like they care everyone from MSHSAA was in Columbia this weekend.

Having been in charge for UMR's tournament the past three years, and running into this problem alot back in the day when I played HS. Where most people say 99 out of the 100 will say stonewall, you may get that 1 that says Thomas. Now in HS my captain loved to challenge so he would say Thomas just to slow the game down. Now running a tournament I don't want it slowed down, so I make sure we have all the possible answers( you should of seem of our trig questions i think on one there was 5 different answers)

The questions were once again well written, and compared to the horrible questions we had at quads and conference, infinitely better. There was a good mix of short and longer questions (our tournament always seems to lean to the long side), as well as easy and obscure, and overall they played very well. There were only a couple of insignificant factual errors but probably nothing that would have changed the outcome of a game.

Our B team also claimed to have had a recognition problem in their third game against Lee's Summit North. They say in the first quarter, Eric buzzed in and the caller said "Liberty" and just looked at him. He waited for the caller to say his name but 3 seconds later he assumed that "Liberty" meant being recognized and he gave his answer but they didn't give it to him because he "wasn't recognized." If this did not happen and the rest of the game went the way it did, B team and LSN would have tied. It could have affected the bracket had B team won but obviously it didn't matter too much. (We reportedly had a similar problem occur in our tournament during single-elimination, so it's obviously not the first time it's happened)

Anyway, after playing in this tournament yesterday, I'm really somewhat depressed that districts and state (if we win districts, of course) are the only tournaments we have left. The tournament was exceptionally run and is very hard to match. Of course this is the way it has always been run, but there is just a little too much downtime between morning rounds with the staggered small school/large school games, but if you don't have the space or personnel, you don't really have much of a choice.

Well it is simple wrtie your questions right and you wont have people like Kyle having gripes

Just take what he has to say a try harder next time.... there is always room for improvment

I'm griping about beauty marks here!

The first time I coordinated question writing, it was really rough. I made the error of 1) allowing a Mohs Scale of Hardness Bonus and 2) having an earth science question right after it that involved the Mohs Scale of Hardness. That and Dr. Jacobs accused me of writing questions that slanted to the right (I dissed St. Louis for allowing a petition from a dead guy to keep the polls open in 2000), formatting was shoddy, Jones's edits to the second round were never made, pyramid questions weren't really that pyramidal (first time for everyone), and in the final round the moderator thought that Cedar Point's opening date of 1870 was a typo.

But that was two years ago, Jeff's capitalized on that with his question writing database, and I'm sitting at my Compaq back up in the Ville slowly turning into the stereotypical AWM. Whether that's the style of G. Gordon Liddy, Al Franken, Clay Chastain or (shudders) Larry Iles has yet to be seen.

LOOK HERE

Yes, I know this post has been edited, my comments were very harsh and inappropriate. The tournament, school, life, everything had me stressed out and I lashed out when I should have kept my mouth shut and taken the constructive criticism. I apologize to Kyle, Bill, and anyone else who was offended by my post. I have no excuse for being so unkind and short-sighted.

Based on the criteria you prefer to hear, well it's easy to say:
The structure was short and succinct, just how questions built for speed need to be. High quality subjects, well-researched content, wasn't lop-sided from one subject to another.

Obviously I should have led off with this simple compliment as opposed to bringing up a moot point (which wasn't word choice). You don't tell a gorgeous goddess like Aphrodite that she's got a zit behind her left ear. Of course she'd flip out and turn you into a gecko, but overall she's still a drop-dead, gorgeous mythological figure that's the envy of everyone in the Greek pantheon and even her rivals in Yggdrasil. So that's what I learned from this debate over why Asian islands were brought up twice in one quarter.

Oh, and that I have no life and that I'm going to be stuck in either the back end of a high school building on a sprawling suburban campus or a sweaty AM radio studio for the rest of said so-called life, wondering why I still haven't been kissed. Consarn it, Melissa, you've gone and humbled me again.

Sorry, Kyle, I've been a little too harsh and I apologize. I had one really bad round moderating on Saturday, not to mention substituting the Friday before the tournament (always stressful), and so I was just directing my anger in the only available outlet at the time.

Savannah is definitely my favorite tournament of the year. (other than state) Our first round was against Lexington and it went into Sudden Death (insert sound effect) but we came out victorious. The rest of the morning was pretty easy after that. I was surprised by St. Joe Christians demise in the 4th round to Estherville. I checked their stats for that round and I was shocked. They had 11 toss-ups total that round...It's just not what I expected from a team that lost to us by only 80 points last year at districts...On a happier note our performance was definitely encouraging. Even though we took 2nd(for the third consecutive year) our numbers were way up from last year. Last year we had 120 tossups(Alex 80, Me 40), this year 145(Me 115, Matt 20, Sam 10). I'm excited for districts...

P.S. In the Championship Round it was Lexington's good fortune to be trailing 90-80 after the first quarter because they got first pick of the lightning round and swept the literary pseudonyms...

P.S.2. Northside was fun to watch. Jordan (i think that's what her name was) was impressive when it came to literature. She was in the room for one of our rounds and we chose "characters and their works" for a lightning round, I got like the first 5 and was clueless after that but when Cordell asked if anybody else in the room knew the other 5 she named all 5.

I also liked Savannah the best cause it was diffrent than every other tournament, that and since they run small and large school at different times, we had plenty of time to play cards

out coach had a nice rule, no studying on tournament days... I did not complain. Also kept us loose. A good loose team will always beat a good Tight team every day. Oh and Quiz bowl is meant to be fun. Maybe why some of the "good" quiz bowl school have hardly anyone playing in College.

Half of us usually play cards or something and half study before the first game and then we might study after lunch. Mark, Ryan, John, and I are the big studiers, and everybody else studies once in a while but they generally chat away. Our traditional rule is "study on the way there, party on the way back," the "party" part is gradually becoming "play mario battle" thanks to the influence of the class of 2007 (namely John, Shane, and Alex).

Actually, I know we've had a similar thread, but I think I'll divert this topic to a new thread.

New unofficial rule #3 has just been put forth... thanks for mentioning the possibility, although I should have realized it at STATE last year...................

(doesn't matter anyway... all that actual official stuff in the scholar bowl constitution isn't being followed anyway, like the "you have to go to the last practice before a tournament or you can't go")

at UMR the Ben pays 20 bucks for anyone on the team that has met a girl (or if it is there thing a guy) on a quiz bowl weekend and they have some private time. To cut his loses you have met this girl (or guy) for the first time that weekend.

Jim and I got close last year at Truman, if ben did not change the rules, under his old rules we made 20 bucks
