Washington University Fall Academic Tournament V (11/09/19)

Post by Mickey0R0urke »

Hello everyone,

I, Jacob O’Rourke, my co-director, Michael Powers, and the Washington University Quiz Bowl team are pleased to announce that Washington University in St. Louis will be hosting a fall invitational tournament on November 9, 2019. We will be using the WAIT set, information about which can be found here.

Logistics information will be made available once the semester begins. This tournament will be seeking to be a qualifier for the 2020 PACE NSC.

The fee structure is:
Base Fee: $70 per first team from a school, $60 per each subsequent team from a school.
Staffer Discount: $15 per staffer.
Working Buzzer Discount: $5 per buzzer (your system must allow for 8 people to play at any one time for us to use it for the discount).

Our preferred method of payment is a check made out to “Washington University Quiz Bowl.” We’ll also accept cash on the day of the tournament as well.

This tournament’s field will be initially capped at 36 teams. After the initial field fills, we will expand the field by 4 teams (so first we will expand to 40; then to 44, although it depends on our staffing situation) until reaching a final field of 48 teams.

We are allowing for direct entry for the first three teams from a school. A school’s first three teams will have priority on the waitlist, ahead of any further (D and so on) teams from a school. Any further teams (example: D or E teams) will be placed on a separate waitlist and allowed into the field 10 days before the tournament date, pending available space in the field (so you will know by October 30th).

We will be limiting a team’s roster to a maximum of 6 players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity or “B” or “C” teams to compete. Rosters will be submitted in advance, but won’t be finalized until during check-in the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

Registration
To register, simply email myself (Jacob O'Rourke) at jacob.orourke.7@gmail.com and tell me how many teams, buzzers and staffers your school will be bringing, along with (at some point before the tournament) a day-of contact number.

I look forward to seeing everybody on November 9th!

We have one spot left in the WUFAT field. Once the field fills, we will start a waitlist, so there's a decent chance teams on the waitlist will still get to play. I'm looking forward to receiving more registrations soon!

I emailed this announcement to coaches, but I forgot to post this here before now: Due to a lack of available rooms, I am not comfortable expanding the tournament to 48 teams, so we'll be sticking with a 36 team field.

This tournament is a platinum qualifier for the NSC, which means that the top 25% of teams will qualify for the 2020 NSC, which is being held on the weekend of June 6th-7th at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, IL (which is a suburb of Chicago).

My apologies for the very late wrap-up post, but here it is (it was sent out via email a few days after the tournament).

Congratulations to University Lab A, who defeated Miami Valley 425-345 in the first game of an advantage final to win the tournament. Woodford County defeated the St. Louis Patriots 445-245 to secure third place.

I announced this at the tournament opening meeting, but I should also announce it here: this was my last time directing this tournament. I've enjoyed seeing this tournament grow into a great event for teams throughout the Midwest, but I still have a lot of growing to do, and 5 years is long enough as the director of one tournament. I'm honored to announce that this event will be directed for the forseeable future by my Co-TD this year, Michael Powers.

Full stats for the day can be found here.

Thanks for attending, and I look forward to seeing you all compete at some further point this season.
