2019 Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR) - Moberly HS, 30th March 2019

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

Academic Coaches,

The members of Moberly High School Scholar Bowl are proud to serve as host of the fifth Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR), and invite your team to participate in our tournament at MHS, scheduled for March 30th, 2019. This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup. We will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Each incorrect part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • Math computation tossups and bonus shall receive ten seconds instead of 15.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Teams will have to use a timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
Because of the postponement of MYST, we are establishing varsity and novice divisions. Teams may sign up for either division. The size of each field will depend on demand as well as viability of pool setups. We will set a preliminary field cap of 18 teams per division. Teams will be placed on a waitlist once initial caps are met and contacted should an opening occur, or if either or both of the fields expand.

We have secured set IS-184A from NAQT, the provider of the questions for the MSHSAA district and state tournaments, for the varsity division. At present this set is assigned to tournaments in DeSoto and Maryville. If you have registered for either of these events, you will not be able to participate in OMAR. No roster restrictions will be in place for the varsity division, and therefore we again anticipate being a qualifier for the SSNCT in Chicago, HSNCT in Atlanta, and PACE NSC in Reston, Virginia.

Our novice division will utilize the SCOP Novice 9 set, written by members of the Scholastic Community Outreach Program of Illinois. More information and sample packets are available at http://scop-qb.org/. This set was also used at novice tournaments in Oakville on November 3rd and Tuscumbia on January 28th; you will not be able to attend these or any other tournament using this set. The novice division will have a roster restriction: seniors, juniors not in their first semester of playing 20/20 tournaments, and sophomores who competed at HSNCT, SSNCT or PACE NSC will be limited to the varsity division.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Cafenasium, with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $70
  • Additional teams (including teams in the other division): $65
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road, best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

The tournament is under the direction of Moberly High School Coach Kathy Brandon and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Again we anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/RegisterFor2019OMAR. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at KathyBrandon@MoberlySpartans.org or Kyle Hill kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “OMAR 2019” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on March 30th.

We're expanding the varsity field to 24 teams. Teams on the waitlist should reply to the e-mail I just sent to confirm their availability.

Varsity stats are up:
CombinedPrelimsPlayoffsSuperPlayoffs
Congratulations to Kickapoo A for going 9-0 to win the Varsity division! Hallsville A finished second, while Orchard Farm took care of Kirksville B for third.

Novice division is still playing, as Kirksville C just spoilt Hallsville C's advantage. Eldon claimed third over Kickapoo C.

Hallsville C edged Kirksville C to claim the Novice/JV division title. Once I receive the stats file and upload it, I'll have details posted.

It wouldn't be a tournament in Missouri this season without a poorly timed snowfall, and sure enough it happened. But it didn't stop us from having what I hope what was a wonderful tournament this weekend.

Kickapoo A completed a convincing 10-0 run through the Varsity division, defeating Hallsville A in Round 7, then again in the advantaged final to win outright. Orchard Farm's win over Kirksville B in Round 7 proved to decide third-place. Wellsville's Jesse Cash was the top Varsity player with 119 points per game. In the Novice division, Hallsville C had its advantage spoilt by Kirksville C in the finals, but were able to claim the decisive third game to win the tournament. Eldon defeated Kickapoo C for third, led by Jacob Groves who was the division's top individual performer with 95 points per game.

Thanks as always go to our intrepid team of moderators: Scott Allen, Brian Baker, Ramey Baro, Dustin Bax, Tyler Beauregard, Audrey Brandon, Bob Brandon, Tim Cobb, Ben Creech, Jon Deering, Donna Henderson, Sam Lockwood, Allyson Lotz, Ginger Luetkemeyer, Dylan Morris, Brennan Sapp, Dale Schenewerk, Louis Schnoebelen, Kevin Stockman, and Ryan Tolbert; scorekeepers Emily Day, MHS staff Dan Linss and Jess Welker, and Moberly students Clark, Lydia, Jason, Kelsey, Sophia, Tessa, and Vi. I am especially appreciative of the chance to work for the fifth consecutive year with MHS Coach Kathy Brandon in bringing OMAR together. Additional thanks go to assistant coach Sabria el-Kurbu, Moberly HS principal Jeff Jones, activities director Tim Barnett, and superintendent Dr Matt Miller, for their support and willingness to again host some of the region's best opportunities for competition.

With districts, state and nationals approaching, I am very grateful for the chance to again coordinate tournaments for teams around the state. I hope they were of great benefit for your programs. I am also very grateful for the many staff that has spent several Saturdays to help make these tournaments phenomenal events. I look forward to helping develop more of the same, if not even better, next season. Best wishes to your teams at districts, state and nationals. And as always, in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
