Kickapoo Scholar Bowl Tournament (MS/HS) - December 1, 2018

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

Posting on behalf of Kickapoo High School coach Angela Odom - contact aodom@spsmail.org for more information

The members of Kickapoo High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the third annual Kickapoo Scholar Bowl Tournament, scheduled for December 1, 2018. We will have a High school division running at the same time as a middle school division. The high school division will be capped at 24 teams and I have had 21 teams ask to be part of the tournament as of today. The middle school tournament will be capped at 16 teams and I have had 15 teams ask to be part of the tournament as of today. I have posted a link to a google form for you to fill out at the bottom of this announcement to confirm you will be coming. Please get that in as soon as possible. Our tournament will consist of eight to nine games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:

• Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.

• Correct tossup answers are ten points each. All tossups are five seconds, except for math computation which will receive ten seconds. No powers or negs will be awarded.

• The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer instead of 15.

• Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound. All rebounds are five seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.

• In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.

• Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.

• Teams rosters shall be limited to six players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but must have at least two. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.

NAQT has assigned our tournament High school set IS-181 and Middle school set MS-28
The High school set is also assigned to the 2/23 Kewpie Academic team invitational, the 3/16 Orchard Farm Invitational and the 3/30 North Kansas City Invitational. The middle school set is assigned to the 12/8 Sullivan Middle school tournament and the 1/19 Moberly middle school tournament. If you plan to attend another event using this set, you will not be able to attend ours. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 24 teams for high school and 16 teams for middle school. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.
Our tournament is expected to serve as a qualifier for the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, and PACE National Scholastic Championship in Reston, Virginia.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
• First team: $65
• Additional teams: $60
• Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
• Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
• Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
• All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Kickapoo High School is located at 3710 S. Jefferson Ave, in the southwestern part of Springfield. The school is best accessible from Highway 60 at the Campbell Road junction.

The tournament is under the direction of Kickapoo High School Coach, Angie Odom with the assistance of Jeffrey Hill. Members of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state, has provided assistance in developing our event. We anticipate receiving certification and further assistance.

To register for this tournament, please visit https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... w/viewform. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to Angie Odom at aodom@spsmail.org, Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net or Jeffrey Hill at jeffrey@hillonline.net.

Note that in addition to the Saturday tournaments at Sullivan and Moberly, NAQT Middle School Series #28 is also assigned to Ozark 7 Conference Middle School Scholar Bowl, Missouri Bootheel JV Dual Matches (organized by Portageville), Southwest Central Middle School Scholar Bowl, and Tri-County (North) Conference Scholar Bowl (organized by Bevier).

MS 28 is also scheduled for use at the Mid-Lakes Conference. We don't have a confirmed date yet, but I have word from Chad that we are slated for that set.
