2019 BRIC - 16th March 2019, Mexico HS

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

The members of Mexico High School Scholar Bowl welcome your team to join others from across the region at the third Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Challenge (BRIC), scheduled for March 16th, 2019. BRIC will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. All tossups are five seconds, and there are no math computation tossups.
  • Unlike other national tournaments, we will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. In the event a bonus part is computation, the team will receive 10 seconds to answer instead of 15.
  • Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players but must have at least two. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We have secured the 2019 Reinstein Set. More information is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=21464. As of 1st October, the set will also be heard at an event in Belton as well as the Gateway Athletic Conference tournament; should you attend either event you will not be able to compete at BRIC. Additionally, we are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. We anticipate BRIC serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, June 8th-9th in Reston, Virginia.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $65
  • Additional teams: $60
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Mexico High School is located at 639 N Wade Street, in the northwestern part of the city. Plans are to have lunch available in the cafeteria, with proceeds benefiting Audrain County Relay for Life. If you wish you venture off campus for lunch, most options will be along Highway 22 and in the downtown area.

The tournament is under the direction of Mexico High School Coach Dale Schenewerk and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2019MexicoBRIC. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Dale Schenewerk at dschenewerk@mexico.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2019 BRIC” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Mexico High School on March 16th.

Prelims are complete
After seven rounds, Moberly and Helias A take perfect records into the playoff pool. Two of their wins will carry over, while Helias B and Mexico A will have 1-1 records and both Tolton teams will have 0-2 records to start the playoff phase.

Our remaining eight teams will be guaranteed two more games in their consolation pools of four. They will have the option to play round ten against the team in their pool they already played this morning, or they may elect to have their morning round match carryover.

Helias A's shock loss to Tolton A gives Moberly the opportunity to win first outright this round. We might need to use tiebreakers to sort out second and third. The other games right now are Mexico A (2-2) & Tolton A (1-3), while Helias B and Tolton B (both also 1-3) are the third match.

After suffering its lone loss, Helias A regrouped and handed Moberly its first loss to force a one-game playoff for the championship, which the Crusaders won to claim the tournament title. Third place came down to a pair of tie-breaker games between Helias B, Mexico, and Tolton A. Helias B defeated Tolton A, followed by the host Bulldogs surging late to claim third over Helias B. Moberly's Brennan Sapp was the top individual performer.
Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoffs

It was a long but rewarding day, and it wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of our staff: moderators, Rev. Brian Baker, Audrey Brandon, Kathy Brandon, Walter Hollis, Ginger Luetkemeyer, Dale Schenewerk Sr, and Louis Schnoebelen, and scorekeepers Lindsey Yancey and student staffers Alyson, Amya, Casey, Hayley, Maverick and Maykayla. Special thanks to Michael Powers and Errica Thornhill for stepping in for a couple rounds to help keep things moving smoothly. Additional thanks go to Debbie Fountain of the Mexico Go-Gitters (Audrain County Relay For Life) for providing concessions, and to Karen Ford and her advanced foods class for catering staff refreshments (including this clever arrangement for the veggie tray). I am especially appreciative of MHS head coach Dale Schenewerk for organizing this third iteration of BRIC, as well as the support from MHS principal Brad Ellebracht, activities director Jeff Anderson, superintendent Dr Zachary Templeton, and everyone at Mexico School District 59 for their hospitality this past weekend and support of quiz bowl in the region.

I'll see several of your teams in a couple weeks at Moberly for OMAR, before we gear up for districts and nationals. Best wishes to all teams as the season nears the end, and as always, I close with the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"

Best Regards,
Kyle Hill
