Oakville SCOP Novice tournament - November 3, 2018

Post by kristin.pierce »

Hello all,

Oakville Senior High School (Address: 5557 Milburn Road, St. Louis, MO, 63129) will be hosting a mirror of the SCOP Novice Tournament on November 3, 2018.

The novice tournament will be a mirror of a set produced by the Scholastic Community Outreach Program (SCOP) of Illinois, which is specially written to appeal to newer or inexperienced players. Each round will consist of 20 tossup questions with 20 3-part bonuses should a team answer a tossup correctly. The tournament will use 15-point "powers" (reward for an early enough buzz), but no "negs". Bonuses will not rebound. There is no computational math in the SCOP Novice Tournament set.

Previous iterations of the SCOP Novice Set can be found here:
SCOP 2015: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/1707/
SCOP 2014: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/737/
SCOP 2013: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/610/
SCOP 2012: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/582/
SCOP 2011: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/70/
SCOP 2010: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/64/

The tournament, since it is a novice set, will have eligibility restrictions. These restrictions are basically the same as Oakville’s previous novice tournaments:

All freshmen can play.
Sophomores can play if they did not score more than 15 points per game at either NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC in their freshman year.
Juniors can play if this is their first year of quiz bowl.
No seniors can play.

This tournament will also be using a rule where a single team can have no more than six players on a team. If you have more than six players, please do not feel hesitant about signing up a second or even third team! The extra playing time will be an invaluable experience for your novice players!

Fee Structure

First team from a school: $55
Every subsequent team from a school: $45
Buzzer Discount: $5 per system
Staffer Discount: $15 per staffer
Minimum Fee: $25 per team

The initial cap will be 18 teams. If we have enough qualified staffers we may expand.

This tournament will be affiliated with the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance (http://moqba.org), an organization dedicated to promoting high quality quiz bowl throughout the state of Missouri.

Since there are no viable lunch options within walking distance of Oakville Senior High School, we will be ordering pizza at a minimal cost (pepperoni/cheese) for all players and coaches. Lunch is free for all staffers.

Registering teams should email me, Oakville's coach, Kristin Pierce (kpierce@msdr9.org) with their signup information and any questions.

We hope to see many up-and-coming quizbowlers in November!

Any interested staffers should email me at kpierce@msdr9.org. We provide moderators with a stipend.
