2017 MOQBA Fall Championship - Dec. 9 at Columbia College

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the MOQBA Fall Championship on December 9, 2017 at Columbia College in Columbia. As this is one of MOQBA's flagship events, we expect to host a geographically diverse field and encourage high school teams from every corner of the state to attend.

The MOQBA Fall Championship will use the 2017 Harvard Fall Tournament (HFT) set written and edited by the Harvard University academic team. As of September 21, this set was not assigned to any other tournament in Missouri. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team has not previously heard this question set and will not compete in any other tournaments using this set. Question set assignments are subject to change at any time; a list of tournaments known to be using this set is available in the forum thread linked above.

For more information about the tournament and a link to the registration form, see the full announcement on our website.

We now have only four spots left in the initial 24 team field! If your school wants to attend but hasn't registered yet, register before the end of September to claim one of these final spots (or a spot near the top of the waitlist). On October 1 (this upcoming Sunday), any remaining spots will go to teams at the top of the waitlist and all registrations received after that will be added to the end of the waitlist, which currently has 14 teams.

Thanks to all of the schools who have offered staff! Your help is putting us on track to announce our first expansion within a couple of weeks and gives us a good chance of reaching our goal of 36 teams.

Three spots left! This is the last day for new schools to claim an available spot before we will fill the rest of the initial 24 team field from the waitlist.

A few updates:

- We have officially expanded to 30 teams. We're likely to end up at 32 eventually, but if we get several last minute staff additions we could potentially expand all the way to 36. If you're an experienced moderator interested in staffing this tournament, please contact us at fall@moqba.org soon.
- The tournament is now sanctioned by MSHSAA.
- PACE has awarded the tournament platinum certification, meaning that the top 25% will qualify for the 2018 PACE NSC on June 2-3 near Washington DC.

We have confirmed our expansion to 32 teams and now have an opening that could not be filled from the waitlist. We'd ideally like to have a 32 team field to avoid any byes in the schedule. Any schools interested in joining the tournament are encouraged to register; see the announcement for a link to the registration form.

In our round 10 game against Hallsville, we scored 275 points, not 175 points. I think that is why our points per bonus looks so bad that round.

Congrats to St. Joseph Central. They played well today. Will Gentry is a good player.

After round 9, Central High School from St. Joseph, Hallsville A, Helias Catholic A, and Washington A advanced to the superplayoffs, while the remaining championship tier teams played round 10 placement games.

After round 11, Central, Helias A, and Hallsville A each had one loss, setting up a two stage final, seeded by points per game within the superplayoff pool. Helias won the first game 330-120 over Hallsville to advance to the championship game against Central. Central won the final game 415-55 to earn the title of tournament champion. In addition to finishing third overall, Hallsville A was declared the small school champion outright as the only small school eligible team to advance to the final four superplayoffs.

See the full recap on our website.

Thanks to all of the teams, staff, and the amazing representatives from Columbia College for making this another great event! We hope to see all of you return to Columbia College for the NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 3 and/or the Pre-Nationals Tournament on May 12!
