South Shelby Winter Invitational (SS WIN) - 6th Jan 2018

Post by L-Town Expatriate »

Good morning! I am pleased to announce that the members of South Shelby High School Campus Bowl will serve as host of the inaugural South Shelby Winter INvitational (SS WIN), and invite your team to participate in our tournament at SSHS, scheduled for January 6th, 2018. This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup.
  • Unlike other NAQT/national tournaments, we will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. Incorrect bonus parts shall immediately rebound.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall apply with the following exceptions:
    • Teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds.
    • Math calculation tossups and bonus shall receive ten seconds instead of 15.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30-second timeout per half. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
SS WIN is part of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance’s Winter Invitational series, part of MOQBA’s efforts to promote quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. Consistent with other tournaments in series, a roster restriction is in place. Schools which qualified for the playoffs at last season’s NAQT Missouri Qualifier, Small School National Championship Tournament, High School National Championship Tournament, or National Scholastic Championship will only be able to place teams on the waitlist, and may only field rosters that do not contain players who competed in the playoffs at those events. Should spots become open on or after December 11th, teams will be moved into the field in the order teams were registered. Because of this restriction, we will not be serving as a qualifier for any national tournament.

We have secured set IS-171A from NAQT, the provider of the questions for the MSHSAA district and state tournaments. This set is assigned to MOQBA’s other Winter Invitational hosts: Lakeland, Mountain Grove, Pilot Grove and Wentzville Holt, as well as tournaments at Lee’s Summit North and Perryville. If you are planning to register for any of these events, you will not be able to participate in SS WIN.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Commons, with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:15 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m. We are currently limiting the field to 18 teams. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $65
  • Additional teams: $60
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staffer: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

South Shelby High School is halfway between Clarence and Shelbina along (but not directly accessible from) the eastbound lanes of Highway 36. You will need to get off at the junction with Route FF, turn north then left onto South Shelby Drive. Because of the distance and limited lunch options in Clarence and Shelbina, we are planning to have a school organization operate a concession and lunch stand.

The tournament is under the direction of South Shelby High School Coach Ann Neubauer and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance. Assistance will be provided by other MOQBA members as well as community members.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/2018SCR4WIN. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Ann Neubauer at aneubauer@cardinals.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at kyle@hillonline.net. Please include “2018 SS WIN” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at South Shelby High School on January 6th.

Best Regards,
Kyle Hill

The field is now full. We will add teams to the waitlist and contact them in the event of any openings. Again, the roster restriction with respect to playoff participation at nationals is in effect; affected schools may only be admitted to the field on or after December 11th, and may only include players that have not participated in the playoffs at HSNCT, SSNCT or PACE NSC.

Our tournament is underway. Major kudos already to the support of Coach Neubauer's program, as well as SSHS principal Deacon Windsor and Shelby County R-IV Superintendent Tim Maddex for their hospitality and enthusiasm today in hosting the inaugural winter invitational. We're also looking forward to South Shelby's FFA chapter staffing the lunch and concession stand.

Centralia A, Hannibal A and North Shelby A ended up in a three-way tie for first. Centralia A had the most points in the playoffs and received a bye into the one-game final. Hannibal A avenged its lone loss by defeating North Shelby A 480-90 to take the other spot in the final. Despite falling behind early, Centralia was able to take the lead and hold on for the 335-295 win over Hannibal.

I will have a more thorough recap & list of kudos later tonight. For now...

As reported yesterday, Centralia A edged Hannibal A for the tournament title, while North Shelby A finished third. Our top two scorers were both from within the county, as Tyler Beauregard led the way with 101 points per game for the host Cardinals, and Kameron Clark of North Shelby was second with 84 points per game.

I want to extend my gratitude to our tournament help this weekend: moderators Brian Baker, Kathy Brandon, Andrew Darr, Stephanie Hull, Linda Kropf, Jason Loy, Megan Mudd, Amy Sternke, and Joanne Wilcox; scorekeepers Callie, Jacob, Makenna and Zeke from South Shelby, as well as Hannah from Moberly, Andrew Reynolds from Centralia, and South Shelby alumni Connor Stevenson and Jared Wilt. I also extend my appreciation to Coach Ann Neubauer for helping spearhead our tournament and lining up house staff, as well as an assortment of behind-the-scenes work. Additional thanks go to Tim Larrick, Kathryn Coon, and members of the South Shelby FFA for operating our lunch and concession stand. Further, I wish to extend an exceptional amount of thanks to Shelby County R-IV superintendent Tim Maddex and SSHS principal Deacon Windsor for all their enthusiasm and support in helping launch SS WIN, serving not just as gracious hosts, but eager to assist as scorekeepers and helping wherever else needed to make this inaugural tournament a great success. I'm hopeful that we'll see a strong tournament develop in what I affectionately term the cradle of Missouri Quizbowl.

Best wishes to all teams as the season continues, and as always, in the words of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
