Lakeland Winter Invitational - 1/7/17

Post by Jason Loy »

Hello coaches,

We are pleased to announce that Lakeland High School will be hosting a high school academic quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, January 7, 2017. We will be using NAQT's 161-A question set. This set is also being used at DeSmet, Columbia Independent School, Holt, Houston, Perryville, Marionville, and Lee's Summit North; if you are attending this tournament, you may not attend any of the other tournaments listed. The limit on team size is eight, although teams of six or fewer students are encouraged. Schools may register multiple teams. Each game consists of twenty tossups and up to twenty three-part, thirty point rebounding bonuses. The field will initially be capped at 12 teams. Four spots are initially reserved for members of the Western Missouri Conference; we will take registrations for the other eight spots on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Since the question set that we're using is designed for less experienced teams, we will be setting the following eligibility restrictions:

1) Players who played on teams that finished in the top 4 in the 2015-16 season in any class in the MSHSAA State tournament are ineligible.
2) Players who played on teams that finished in the top bracket (top 12 teams) in the 2016 Missouri Qualifier are ineligible.
3) All other players are eligible.

Entry fees are as follows:

First team from each school: $60
Second and subsequent teams from each school: $55
Providing a fully functioning buzzer system: -$5 per system
Travel discount (at least 100 miles each way): -$10 per team
Providing a trained scorekeeper: $-5 per scorekeeper (if needed)
Providing an experienced moderator: negotiated on an individual basis (if needed)

All teams will play at least eight games regardless of performance; the exact format of the tournament will be decided once the field is set. Teams are expected to stay for the duration of the tournament so we can offer all teams their guaranteed number of games.

Due to the lack of fast food options around Lakeland High School, the team will be selling lunch (pizza, possibly brats or other options) on-site.

To register, please email both Jason Loy (jloy@tuscumbialions.k12.mo.us) and Ted Hall (tehall@lakeland.k12.mo.us) with both the number of teams and buzzer systems that you plan to bring.

Please don't hesitate to email with any questions you may have, and we look forward to receiving your registrations. We hope to see you in January!

Due to a recent drop, one spot, awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, is available for this tournament. Please let me or Ted know if you're interested.
