Hallsville Invitational Tournament V (February 4th, 2017)

Post by Hallsville Coach »

Hallsville High School is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the fifth annual Hallsville Invitational Tournament on February 4, 2017. This is a varsity tournament but please feel free to bring additional teams.

Format:
This tournament will feature the twenty tossup/bonus format using the BASQT II set by Bergen Academies. Games consist of twenty tossups worth ten points each followed by non-rebounding bonuses worth up to thirty points. Tossups will feature "powers" (additional points awarded for correct buzzes very early in the question) and "negs" (five point deductions for incorrect answers before the question is finished).
We anticipate using two full round robins in the morning and afternoon with an advantaged final to decide the champion depending on the number of teams registered.

Fees:
base fee (first team from each school): $70
second or subsequent teams: $65
travel discount (100 miles or more one way): -$5 per team
buzzer discount (must work for eight players; limit two per school): -$5

To register, please e-mail me at sallen@hallsville.org to reserve your spot. We look forward to seeing you in February.

This tournament has been awarded platinum certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence. As a result, the top 25% of the field will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship in Chicago on June 10-11, 2017.

The Hallsville Quiz Bowl team had a fantastic time today hosting our fifth annual Hallsville Invitational Tournament. We had a great field of teams and a wonderful crew of moderators and staff so that everything went very smoothly and as scheduled. First, I'd like to thank all of our great moderators for helping out: Glen Decker, Logan Hansen, Joel Adams, Logan Durk, Jeffrey Hill, David Dennis, Matt Hasquin, Jon Deering and Ginger Luetkemeyer. Also a big thank you to our crew of Middle School score keepers and their coach: Emma, Brealynn, Karina, Jaimie and Mrs. Lockwood.

We played 9 rounds today and at the end of round 9 we had a 3 way tie for 1st place with only 30 points separating all three teams (Washington B, Helias A and Southwestern). Helias A defeated Southwestern in a play-in game for the right to play Washington B in the championship match. In the final match, Helias A defeated Washington B in a very close match to become the champion of our fifth annual tournament. Congratulations to all teams involved in today's tournament for their excellent play and sportsmanship. We look forward to seeing you at next year's tournament (February 3rd, 2018).

Stats for the tournament can be found here:

PS. David- thanks for bringing me the donuts from Washington....you are now my new favorite person!

As a former member of the Missouri quiz bowl community and the coach of the Bergen County Academies team who wrote the set used at Hallsville's tournament, I hope you enjoyed the questions. Please note that they're not open for discussion until the end of the season (May). If you have any feedback or critiques that we can use to improve the set for future mirrors, please send them to me at pinyan@gmail.com or to the team at basqt.set@gmail.com. If you are on the HSQB forums, a private forum "BASQT 2017" will be available soon for discussion.
