CIS Winter Invitational - 1/7/17

Post by Jason Loy »

Hello coaches,

I am pleased to announce that Columbia Independent School will be hosting a high school academic quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, January 7, 2017. We will be using NAQT's 161-A question set. This set is also being used at DeSmet, Lakeland, Holt, Houston, Perryville, Marionville, and Lee's Summit North; if you are attending this tournament, you may not attend any of the other tournaments listed. The limit on team size is eight, although teams of six or fewer students are encouraged. Schools may register multiple teams. Each game consists of twenty tossups and up to twenty three-part, thirty point rebounding bonuses. The field will initially be capped at 18 teams, and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Since the question set that we're using is designed for less experienced teams, we will be setting the following eligibility restrictions:

1) Players who played on teams that finished in the top 4 in the 2015-16 season in any class in the MSHSAA State tournament are ineligible.
2) Players who played on teams that finished in the top bracket (top 12 teams) in the 2016 Missouri Qualifier are ineligible.
3) All other players are eligible.

Entry fees are as follows:

First team from each school: $60
Second and subsequent teams from each school: $55
Providing a fully functioning buzzer system: -$5 per system
Travel discount (at least 100 miles each way): -$10 per team
Providing a trained scorekeeper: $-5 per scorekeeper (if needed)
Providing an experienced moderator: negotiated on an individual basis

All teams will play at least eight games regardless of performance; the exact format of the tournament will be decided once the field is set. Teams are expected to stay for the duration of the tournament so we can offer all teams their guaranteed number of games.

To register, please email both Jason Loy (jloy@tuscumbialions.k12.mo.us) and Lisa McClary (mcclaryl@cislions.org) with both the number of teams and buzzer systems that you plan to bring.

Please don't hesitate to email with any questions you may have, and we look forward to receiving your registrations. We hope to see you in January!

Thank you,

Jason Loy and Lisa McClary
Tournament Directors

Moberly took home their first ever tournament win today, followed by Jefferson City A and Pilot Grove A. Dustin Bax, playing solo as Tuscumbia A, was the top individual scorer, while Preston McDowell, playing solo as Tuscumbia B, finished second. Full stats will hopefully be available by Monday due to some technical difficulties. Thanks to everyone at CIS for being great staffers, and to Shelly Kiesling for stepping in as a moderator on short notice!
