Post WHIT II (Washington High) 12/3
Coaches,

I am happy to announce the 2nd Annual Washington High School Invitational Tournament (WHIT II) on December 3rd, 2016. It will be held in Washington Middle School, the same building as last year’s event.

The tournament will be in the 20 Tossup/20 Bonus format. To encourage players, we will be using “Powers,” or 15 points for an early correct answer, and we will NOT be using “Negs” or “Interrupts” (-5 for early incorrect answers)

In the interest of keeping the day running quickly, we will not be using bouncebacks on bonuses. This is a change from last year.

We will be using the Washington/Hickman Academic Questionfest (WHAQ), our first-ever team-written set of questions, done in collaboration with Hickman High School in Columbia, MO. By the time of this tournament, there will have been at least three other tournaments across the country using this set, and we will be relying on their feedback to make sure we’re offering the best possible product. More details about the set and the question distribution can be found here.

Side note - this will be the same set used at Hickman High School’s tournament scheduled for February 25. Teams cannot play at both events.

We are currently capping the field at 36 teams, but we hosted 48 last year, and the field can expand if there is significantly more interest and staff. The field filled up within a few days last year, so be sure to register as soon as you can!

Prices are:
- $65 for the first team from a school, $60 for each additional team. (B, C, D, etc.)
- Fully functional buzzer systems are a $5 discount (must work for 8 players, limit 2 per team)
- Providing an experienced scorekeeper is a $5 discount. We reserve the right to refuse scorekeepers.
- Providing an experienced moderator (reader) is a $15 discount. Please let us know about these well in advance. We reserve the right to refuse moderators.
- Teams traveling over 100 miles (one way per Google Maps) will receive a $5 discount.

Registration will begin at 8:30, the first matches will take place at 9:00 AM, and there will be a lunch break around 12 PM. There will be a concession stand (popcorn, candy, and sodas) open during the day. There are several options for lunch in town. Most teams should be done by 5 PM.

Spots will be filled on a first come/first served basis. Rather than emailing me, please use this form to register. You are not registered until you receive a confirmation email from the tournament director. If interest and staffing permits, we will lift the cap to as high as we can accommodate, so again, please let us know about buzzers and moderators as early as possible.

Teams placing 1st-4th will receive a trophy. There are prizes for the top 10 individual prelims scorers.

Our school’s address is 401 E. 14th St., Washington, MO 63090. We will be playing in the Middle School building, rather than the High School.
- If you come by I-44, Washington is exit #251 on route 100 – turn right at the 100/47 intersection, and then take a left to the middle school at the 2nd stoplight. The middle school will be visible on the right.
- If you come by I-70, take exit 203 (State Hwy T) follow that for about 15 miles, turn left on 47, cross the bridge into town, and take a right to the middle school at the 6th stoplight. The middle school will be visible on the right.

And in less than a day, we've hit the cap. I've raised it to 42, but may be able to go higher after I make some emails.

And in less than 2 days, we've hit that cap as well. When I get the chance later today to sift through my pool of moderators and get some structure to the staff numbers, I'll see if I can lift the cap to 48.

For right now, better safe than sorry.

Yeah, this isn't really strictly related to tournament discussion, but it's unbelievable to me (speaking as someone who virtually never attended a tournament of even 36 teams, much less 48) to see this sort of field cap filled so quickly. Bravo to you, Washington quizbowl.

This tournament has been Platinum Certified by PACE, meaning the top 25% will qualify for their National Championship in Chicago, June 10-11.

Will WUStL be used again this year? If so, is there a link to follow along?

Asking for a friend, who is stuck at work this weekend...

Nope, we're using paper - it's so much easier to run SQBS when there's no bouncebacks.

That said, we should have stats up faster this year* since we don't have to enter in all the information twice.

MICDS and Louisiana A are in the final. Eureka is 4th, Marquette 3rd.

Famous last words indeed. SQBS and I are having issues. I plan on having stats up before the end of the weekend, however.

Stats are here.

I'm missing two Round 10 scoresheets for the teams placing 13th-16th. I'll update should those turn up.

Big thanks to Sean Phillips, Jeff Hill, Matt Chadbourne, Mike Martinez, all coaches who helped moderate, and all Washington team members who staffed and put up with me for the day.

I'm always a little bit stunned at just how well David and crew are able to staff tournaments of this size. If only every team could enjoy even half of the support from parents and faculty that Washington gets...

Anyway, this was yet another excellent tournament put on by the Washington crew. Running a 48-team event is no easy task by itself, but making it through the entire day with no major logistical snafus, giving every team 10 rounds by 4:30, and finishing the championship by 5:15... that's just plain awesome and I was happy to play a small part in it.

Now, is it too early to talk about shooting for 60 teams next year?

Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't congratulate Alex from MICDS for his spectacular performance. Winning any tournament playing solo is no small feat, to say the least (does anyone know if it had ever been done in Missouri before?) and seeing both the breadth and depth of his knowledge was tons of fun to watch and to moderate for. Outstanding job!

Ben Zhang also did it at Tiger Bowl VI.

Thanks to Mr. Dennis and the rest of the Washington people for making our first tournament of the year a great one. I had a lot of fun getting torn apart by Alex singlehandedly, and now I can't wait to get a chance to play Washington. To be totally honest though, judging by the stats, I'd say our second place victory was a bit of a fluke, but I'm still really glad things worked out the way they did. Again, I very much appreciate all of the effort that went into making this tournament run as well as it did. Great job everyone.

The only stat that matters is a W.

Yup, Sean's right. Besides, beating Eureka, Marquette and Rock Bridge in the same tournament is no fluke. You showed a very solid knowledge base when I moderated for you, so much so that I was really surprised to learn you're only a sophomore. Congrats on your solid second-place finish!

That's true. I was just surprised to find that we placed ahead of several teams with higher PPG and PPB than us. I will say, it felt very gratifying to beat Marquette and Rock Bridge, as well as Calvary Lutheran. I was rather disappointed to not have played Hallsvile, but I'd imagine that day will come eventually.

I appreciate the kind words, Matt. Which round(s) did you moderate for us?

I think I moderated for you twice, but I don't remember which rounds they were off the top of my head. I'll have to see if I saved my schedule to check it. I was reading in the shop classroom, if that helps you place me.

Neato, it was nice meeting you. You moderated for Sullivan and Eureka, I believe. That's another thing I liked about going to this tournament - how I got to meet quite a few rather notable members of the Missouri quizbowl community. I even gained some insight on Washington via a discussion with Matt Chalem, who moderated our Marquette match, and most of the A team was watching the final (although I had a few embarrassingly bad negs in those rounds).

Hopefully Matt Chalem told you the biggest point that I tell my teams, which should go a long way to explaining W's that you didn't expect:

Rule #1: If you control the tossups, you control the game.

Michael, your wins were definitely impressive. Before this tournament we weren't too familiar with you, likely because you don't come to mid-Missouri too often, but now you're definitely on our radar. We have very noticeable weaknesses in music and science and you did not have any noticeable weakness anywhere and managed to take advantage of our weaknesses. You deserved your win, at least against us. We hope you come down to the middle of the state some more this year, and I recommend you guys send a team to JV state this year, I'm sure you'd be a favorite.

Thanks for another great tournament guys, looking forward to next week. It should be our first tournament with all of our top 3 at a tournament for the whole day, so we're gunning for improvement.

Thanks, Nathan. It was great to play against you, and congrats on winning for fifth place against Hallsville - that match was a real nail biter, judging by the score. Anyways, our win against Rock Bridge was really our first "shock" win of the day - I stay updated with stats and I knew who we were going up against, which is a solidly impressive team. I'd put something here about where we have weaknesses, but to be honest, I don't think we're particularly "strong" anywhere - Bryan put in some solid literature buzzes throughout the day, Caleb with geography and world history, and I do my best to generalise pretty much everywhere else, but neither I nor the team as a whole are very specialised in one way or another, which is something we need to work on for sure. Right now, though, I do have a decent knowledge base to build on.

I should also add, we would've liked to attend JV state, but that happens to be the date of our conference tournament.

I would also add a tournament like last years Missouri Fall, we (Washington) won and statistically should not have. It's easy to get intimidated by a team that powers 100 something tossups a tournament but it is better to just play the packet that round and see what happens after.
