Nationals Bids Thread for the 2015-2016 Season

Post by Mickey0R0urke »

Hello everyone,

I’m beyond pleased to announce that the nationals bids thread will be revived for the 2015-2016 season. Now that Hallsville’s Fall Invitational has completed. it’s time to get the thread started! Congratulations to Hannibal, Hickman A and Washington A for qualifying for HSNCT and the NSC, and to Orchard Farm A and Washington B for also qualifying for NSC.

The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance wants to encourage all teams to work towards qualifying for three high quality national tournaments, which all will feature highly competitive fields of the best teams in the country. This post provides information on how to qualify, a list of qualifying tournaments for each national, and a list of Missouri teams that have qualified for the 2016 iterations of these tournaments.

NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament

This national will be held from April 29-May 1, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, IL (which is a suburb of Chicago).

How does NAQT decide my school is small enough for SSNCT?
NAQT defines a small school to be any public school with less than 500 students in grades 10-12 that has a non-selective admission policy.

How to qualify for SSNCT (also found on NAQT’s website)
-Qualifying for HSNCT will automatically qualify you for SSNCT.
-Finishing in the top 30% of small schools at a high school varsity tournament that uses NAQT questions. (On the NAQT website, they use the example of a tournament with 12 small schools and 15 large schools would qualify the top 4 small schools)
-Finishing as the highest placing small school at an NAQT State Qualifier that had not already qualified for SSNCT.
-Being the highest placing small school in any class or division of an official state championship with rules and questions similar to NAQT’s.
-You need to win at least one game to receive an invitation to SSNCT.

NAQT’s High School National Championship Tournament

HSNCT will be held from May 27-29 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, TX. This tournament is open to any team consisting of high school students who attend the same school.

How to qualify for HSNCT (also found on NAQT’s website)
-Finishing in the top 15% of schools at a high school varsity tournament that uses NAQT questions.
-Finishing as the highest placing school at an NAQT State Qualifier that had not already qualified for HSNCT.
-Being the highest placing school in any class or division of an official state championship with rules and questions similar to NAQT’s.

Due to MSHSAA rules, Missouri teams are unable to receive Wildcard berths to HSNCT.

Is NAQT going to change its ridiculous definition of what constitutes a "small school" also? That is a much bigger issue than the qualification procedure.

So far, we have 6 teams from Missouri registered for HSNCT. 4 teams have registered for NSC in Chicago, while only one team has registered for Small School Nationals.

Hope to see some more teams register for nationals in the coming months!

This is O'Fallon Christian, if the confusion's about the name.

Apparently, I was the one who was confused. Whoops. :p

I'd recommend registering for HSNCT sooner rather than later if you want to go. The field is over half-full now!

I'm off the internet for a few days, and NSC gets a new Missouri team registered and added to the field.

8 teams in the Qualifier field were already registered for HSNCT at the time of the tournament; those teams swept the top 8 spots! Because this is the official NAQT State Qualifier for Missouri, a bid is awarded to the top team that had not previously qualified. Congratulations to Helias for qualifying a second team to HSNCT after Helias C overcame a 25 point deficit going into the last tossup of the ninth place game to win that game 245-240!

Looks like Helias B and St. Pius X got into HSNCT with their bids earned last Saturday just before the field filled! Of course, there will likely be tons of drops and I wouldn't be surprised if there are one or more field expansions, so plenty of time to get on the waitlist and eventually get a spot.

St. Pius X also won their conference, the West Central Conference, on Saturday. This earned them a bid to HSNCT again.

The NSC has just reached its field cap! MICDS, Ladue A and Ladue B have the top 3 spots on the waitlist, so hopefully those teams will soon get confirmation that they can attend nationals.
