2016 NAQT SSNCT - April 29-May 1 in Chicago

Post by Jeffrey Hill »

80 teams are competing in NAQT's Small School National Championship Tournament this weekend, including 6 from Missouri: Centralia, Gainesville, Hallsville, Maryville, Pilot Grove, and South Shelby.

The tournament will use the card system like HSNCT:
Teams are guaranteed exactly nine preliminary matches on Saturday. Those matches will be determined by power-matching, so that teams with similar records will be playing each other in every round. Every team with a winning record (5–4 or better) will advance to the playoffs. The elimination playoffs will be held on Sunday; teams that finish Saturday 6–3 or better can lose twice before being eliminated; teams that finish 5–4 on Saturday will be eliminated after a single loss.

A total of 11 rounds will be played on Saturday, so each team will have exactly 2 byes. Either 8 or 9 rounds will be played on Sunday, depending on whether the champion finishes with a playoff loss or not.

Hallsville and Centralia have both made the playoffs. Gainesville, Pilot Grove and Maryville are all 4-4 and need to win their last games to make the playoffs. South Shelby is 2-6.

Great job representing Missouri, everybody!

Hallsville is 6-3 and seeded 13 (6th of the thirteen 6-3 teams). Two losses would eliminate Hallsville.

Missouri have three 5-4 teams in the playoffs: Centralia is seeded 24 (4th of the twenty-two 5-4 teams), Gainesville is 34 (14th/22), and Pilot Grove is 37 (17th/22). These teams would be eliminated with only 1 loss.

Maryville narrowly missed the playoffs with a 210-190 loss to West Point B in their final game to put them at 4-5 and 53rd overall. South Shelby finished 65th overall at 3-6, with two close 10 point losses to teams that also eventually finished 3-6. (They were 7th of the sixteen 3-6 teams.)

Individually, it looks like Thomas from Gainesville was 6th overall with 67.43 points per 20 tossups heard. Joel from Hallsville was 11th with 62.19 PP20. Both should be recognized as all-stars for finishing in the top 12 individually. Kate from Centralia was 17th with 56.99 PP20, and Kale from Pilot Grove was tied for 26th with 51.58.

Great job by all today, and good luck tomorrow!

Kale from Pilot Grove is the #2 "Rising Star" (top 9/10th grade individuals who were not named All-Stars) with 51.58 PP20, and Tyler from South Shelby is #3 w/46.11 PP20! Out of 18 individual awards, Missouri students will take home 4!

Assuming I read the bracket correctly:

#13 Hallsville plays #20 Glasgow B (KY) in the Winners' Bracket in round 12. Winner plays #4 Russell (KY); loser plays winner of #29 White Cloud (MI) v. #36 Van Wert (OH)

#24 Centralia plays #41 Illini West (IL) in the Losers' Bracket in round 12. Winner plays winner of #25 Lowellville (OH) v. #40 Fulton (MI); loser is eliminated.

#34 Gainesville plays #31 West Point B (AL) in the Losers' Bracket in round 12. Winner plays loser of #15 Drummond (OK) v. #18 Plymouth (NH); loser is eliminated.

#37 Pilot Grove plays #28 Lisle (IL) in the Losers' Bracket in round 12. Winner plays #21 Maroa-Forsyth (IL); loser is eliminated.

It looks like the earliest possible Missouri v. Missouri games would be the 10/11 card game in round 15 (Centralia v. Pilot Grove) or the 5/16 card game in round 15 (Gainesville v. Hallsville)

Good luck tomorrow!

Judging by the bracket, it looks like Centralia ended their playoff run at round 14, while Hallsville ended their run at round 15 (and will receive a team trophy). Pilot Grove lost their first playoff games. Gainesville won their first playoff game and lost their second.

Congratulations on representing the state so well, everyone. I hope you all have had a great season!

Pilot Grove lost their first playoff game to Lisle (IL) 370-100 to finish tied for 33rd.

Gainesville won their first playoff game against West Point B (AL) 280-210 before dropping their second to Drummond (OK) 405-85, finishing tied for 25th.

Centralia won their first two playoff games against Illini West (IL) 395-65 and Lowellville (OH) 285-180 before falling to eventual t-5 finisher Middlebury Union (VT) 360-200, finishing tied for 17th.

Hallsville won their first playoff game against Glasgow B (KY) 410-100 before a close 370-310 loss to #4 seed Russell (KY), dropping them to the losers' bracket. They won their next game against Raceland-Worthington (KY) 465-190 to clinch a trophy spot, then were eliminated by the eventual fourth place team, Piasa Southwestern A (IL), 475-165 to finish tied for 11th.

Great job all!
