2015 Tuscumbia Fall MS Academic Tournament - 11/14/15

Post by Jason Loy »

Hello coaches,

I am pleased to announce that Tuscumbia High School will be hosting an academic tournament for students in the 8th grade and below on Saturday, November 14, 2015. We will be running two divisions, one for 7th/8th grade teams from MSHSAA member (and affiliate member) schools and one for students in the sixth grade or below. The hard cap on team size is eight players; we request that you limit teams to six players so as to maximize playing time for all students. As of now, the field cap will be set at 18 teams for the 7th/8th grade division and at 12 teams for the 6th grade and under division. We will consider expanding the cap given sufficient interest and sufficient staff.

This tournament will use NAQT's MS-15 question set for all divisions. Games in the 7th/8th division(s) will consist of twenty ten-point tossups (with the possibility of fifteen for an early correct answer) and up to twenty three-part, thirty-point rebounding bonuses. Games in the 6th grade and under division will consist of sixteen ten-point tossups (with the possibility of fifteen for an early correct answer) and up to sixteen three-part, thirty point rebounding bonuses. I will slightly modify the questions for the latter division to make them more accessible for younger players. All teams will be guaranteed at least seven matches regardless of performance.

Entry fees are as follows:

base fee (first team from each school): $60
second or subsequent teams: $55
travel discount (100 miles or more one way): -$5 per team
buzzer discount (as needed, and must work for eight players; limit four discounts per school): -$5

To register, or if you have any questions whatsoever, please email me at jloy@tuscumbialions.k12.mo.us. I hope to see you in November!

Thank you,

Jason Loy

This tournament happened, thanks to all of our awesome volunteers. Thanks to Washington, Hallsville, and Camdenton for bringing large, capable, and friendly staffing entourages. Thanks also go out to Kyle Hill, Stephanie Hull, Meghan Knight, Dan Aronhalt, Ross Sparrow, Sam Huth, Luke Schuster, Dustin Bax, Emily Moeller, Preston McDowell, Shelley Swoyer, Mara Wilkerson, Steve Martonfi, Robin Martonfi, Brittany Gaines, Jan Harris, Dalton Smith, and Kathy Brandon for doing a great job staffing. (Don't recognize some of those names? We have a deeper pool of capable staffers in mid-Missouri than you might think.)

In the 7th/8th grade division, Washington A defeated West B 310-305 in an exciting final. West A, Tuscumbia A, Hallsville, and Washington C rounded out the MSNCT qualifiers. Audrey from Washington was the leading scorer, followed by Harrison from Osage and Ezekiel from West.

In the 5th/6th grade division, Hallsville went undefeated to win the tournament, followed by 7-1 Tuscumbia A and 6-2 Washington. Samantha from Washington was the leader scorer with a ridiculous 115 ppg (remember, this is on 16-tossup games) followed by Lauren from Hallsville and Davis from West.
