5.16--Pre-Nationals and MOQBA Singles Championship!

Post by bruins4life »

Rock Bridge High School is excited to announce its hosting of the Pre-Nationals and Singles Championship Tournaments. We will be using Division II SCT from NAQT for our question set, which is a slight step down from the HSCNT-level questions. Rock Bridge will host the tournament on Saturday, May 16th, 2015 at RBHS in Columbia, MO. This goal of this tournament is to prepare teams for Nationals so there will be a preference for those teams attending one of the national tournaments, although all teams may attend. B- and/or C- teams will automatically start on the waitlist, but I will open the waitlist Monday, May 3rd to non-A-teams.

We will run timed matches of two 9-minute halves, using experienced moderators, with a the standard round robin for the preliminary morning rounds of somewhere between 5 and 8 matches. Depending on the number of teams attending, the afternoon rounds may very likely finish up the round robin so all teams play one another.

There will be tie-breakers and an advantaged final to decide the champion. The top scorers will be recognized with a classic novel, and we will post stats at http://hsquizbowl.org/db/.

Registration will begin at 8:15AM in the Main Commons/Cafeteria, and matches will begin promptly at 9AM.

Be aware that this event does count toward the 14 tournament limit and can be your only tournament between districts and Memorial Day weekend (other than districts/sectionals/state).

Fees:
Base fee for the first team from each school: $65
Second or subsequent teams: $55
Travel discount for 100 miles or more one way: -$5 per team
Buzzer discount (buzzers must be functional): -$5 for each buzzer system
Experienced Moderator discount (upon approval -$10)

Right now, the field is capped at 18 teams, so register soon to guarantee your spot. Email me at girwin@cpsk12.org to reserve your spot(s), and we can finalize how many teams you will bring. We look forward to seeing you in mid-May.

Immediately after the main event, we intend to host the MOQBA Singles Championship, which is a tournament in which students play solo against each other in games consisting of 20 tossups. Because this event will only use tossups, it should run very fast. Also, because MSHSAA jurisdiction only involves team-based events, this will not count towards a player’s 14 tournament limit. This event has proven very popular in the past, and players who weren’t even in the main event have traveled in to participate, so we hope to see this year attract a very competitive field again. There will be an 18-player cap. Once we have secured a question set, a separate announcement will be posted to moquizbowl.com with additional details. We expect the entry fee for this event to be no more than $10 per player.

The MOQBA Singles Championship will be held on Saturday, May 16 in the late afternoon/early evening at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, immediately following the Pre-Nationals tournament. This is a tournament in which students play solo against each other in games consisting of 20 tossups. Because this event will only use tossups, it should run very fast. Also, because MSHSAA jurisdiction only involves team-based events, this will not count towards a player’s 14 tournament limit. All students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate, even if they do not play in the Pre-Nationals tournament.

This tournament will use the Harvard Fall Tournament IX set and will be scheduled similarly to other MOQBA events, with approximately 9 rounds guaranteed to all participants and the standard provisions determining the type of final. The field is limited to 18 players to ensure that the tournament can be completed in a timely manner.

The entry fee per player is $8. Payment of the entry fee for this individual event must be separate from any payments for the main Pre-Nationals tournament.

Email moqba@moqba.org with any questions or to reserve your spot.

Hickman won the Pre-Nationals tournament over Hannibal, going into the finals with an advantage after the round-robin prelims.

In the post-lunch "Staffers vs Coaches" fundraiser game for Matt's Buzzers, the staffers (Jeffrey Hill, Matt Chadbourne and Alex Dzurick) were up at halftime but the coaches (Greg Irwin, Ryan Kennedy, Michelle Conrad, David Dennis and Bob Odzinski) came back to win it on the last question.

Singles tournament is currently happening!

In the Singles Championship, after a full 12 player round robin, Parth Parikh was 10-1, and Alex Harmata and Robby Schmidt were 9-2. Robby won the play-in game 90-70 (with Alex finishing in third place), then Parth won the first game of an advantaged final against Robby 120-60 to win the 2015 MOQBA Singles Championship! Congratulations and thanks to all who participated!

Stats

We got off to a slow start with a couple of issues slowing down some rooms, but once we got those worked out, everything was flowing smoothly by the fourth or fifth round at about a 15 minute pace. I hope everyone had a great experience today! Feedback is always appreciated.
