I just noticed this, but School of the Ozarks had to travel all the way to Bismarck for sectionals? That has to be at least a four hour trip.

Seneca (on the Oklahoma border, south of Joplin) didn't bother making the trip to Salem.

Meanwhile, Kirksville made the hour-long drive south to Hallsville.

Game One: Hallsville 510-300 Kirksville

Game Two: Hallsville 510-300 Kirksville

I wonder if this isn't the score of both games combined. That score adds to 900, which implies that the two teams scored all of the possible points in one game.

They fixed it to read 2-0.

Good point. That seems more plausible.

Google shows right at 4 hours. (Looks like a drive to Leopold would have been even worse at more than 4 1/2) Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's a good way to divide the Class 1 schools south of I-44 to avoid that.

Quote:

Guessing it was largely because this was one of the longest possible trips at 3 1/2 hours each way.

That and outside Joplin proper, the quiz bowl scene has been barren in that corner of the state. McDonald County's program went inactive this year.

That's possible. According to Alex, CIS won game one 360-340.

Games 2 & 3, Tuscumbia (Red) Lions beat the CIS Lions (of a different color).

Hosts sweep in Class 1. If my records are correct:
  • Bismarck, Appleton City, Tuscumbia, Green City, and DeKalb are all making their first State appearances!
  • Princeton making their first State appearance since 2002.
  • New Franklin making their third consecutive State appearance, placing fourth the past two years.
  • Thomas Jefferson making their seventeenth consecutive State appearance, with a Class 1 best 8 state championships and 15 top 4 finishes.

All Class 4 representatives sweep their opponents 2-0.
  • Farmington is making their first State appearance!
  • St. Joseph Central making their second consecutive appearance, placing 7th last year.
  • Springfield Central making their third appearance, with a sixth place finish in 2012 and fourth place finish last year.
  • Park Hill South making their third appearance, with third place finishes in 2011 and 2014.
  • Lee's Summit West returning for their third appearance, after placing 7th in 2012 and 8th in 2013.
  • Clayton returning to State after third place finishes in 2009 and 2010.
  • Marquette returning to State after placing third in 1997 and fourth in 1998.
  • Hickman making a field-leading fourth appearance, with a fifth place finish in 2008 and two consecutive runner-up finishes behind Ladue the last two years.

None of the Class 4 teams made a single appearance between 1999 and 2007. Class 4 has no previous state champions, so one of these schools will be taking home its first state championship!

Ladue's streak of 9 consecutive top 3 finishes and four consecutive championships ended before the district playoffs.

It's double delight for Monroe County schools, with both Paris and Monroe City advancing in Class 2. They won't have to worry facing each other until the semis... if they make it there.

Class 2:
  • Gainesville is making their first State appearance after their first nationals appearance last weekend! Archie and Paris are also making their first State appearances!
  • Lathrop returning for their second appearance, last participating in the very first MSHSAA state championship in 1996.
  • Monroe City returning for their third appearance, looking for their first win after appearances in 1997 and 2010.
  • Saxony Lutheran making their fourth appearance, after a fourth place finish in 2006, first place in 2013, and second place last year.
  • College Heights Christian making their sixth consecutive appearance and ninth overall, with five top four finishes.
  • Richland maintains their status as the only school to appear in every single MSHSAA state championship, with fifteen of nineteen previous appearances, including last year, resulting in a state title.

Class 3:
  • Lafayette County making their first state appearance!
  • Strafford returning in search of their first win, after one previous appearance in 2004.
  • Lutheran South returning to state after a seventh place finish in their first appearance in 2011.
  • Orchard Farm returning for their third appearance, after placing fourth in 2011 and seventh in 2012.
  • Salem returning for their fifth appearance, with previous non-playoff appearances in 2000, 2008, 2009, and a state championship in 2001.
  • Hallsville making their fourth consecutive appearance and seventh overall, and will be defending their 2014 title won in overtime.
  • Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) making their eighth consecutive appearance and twelfth overall, with a state championship in 2008 and five other top 4 finishes.
  • Savannah making their fifteenth appearance in the last sixteen years, only missing in 2009 when they were in North Kansas City's sectional in Class 4. They've won six state championships and have only missed the top three twice.

Overall:
  • Ten teams are making their first appearances at State! (5 in class 1, 3 in class 2, 1 in class 3, 1 in class 4)
  • Only twelve teams are returning from last year's State championship (2/3/3/4). Three of the four Class 4 teams are the only ones that did not also appear in 2013.
  • Seven have previously won state championships (1/2/4/0), including three returning champions
  • Only nine of the 32 teams have 3 or more previous appearances at State. (1/3/4/1)

Post Re: 2015 MSHSAA Sectionals/State
I just checked the state rulebook in advance of state. There appear to have been two changes in the past month:
Rule D.5: IRREGULARITIES, ERRORS, MALFUNCTIONS (as underlined) wrote:
If any other malfunction of the buzzer system occurs, human or mechanical, the judges panel, in consultation with the coaches (as needed), may determine who attempted to signal first and shall recognize that player. If the officials are unable to determine who attempted to signal first, the question shall be thrown out and replaced.

Rule L.3: ADVANCEMENT, SEEDING AND TIE BREAKING PROCEDURE (emphases retained) wrote:
For seeding and advancement purposes, if after the preliminary rounds there is a tie between teams on records and point average, the tie would be broken by using the following criteria (in order):
  1. The winner of any Head to Head competition (if the teams played each other in the preliminary rounds) will be seeded higher or advanced forward.
  2. Total points scored against common opponents will be compared and the team with the higher total will be seeded higher or advanced forward.
  3. Total toss-ups answered correctly against common opponents (not to include overtime questions) will be compared and the team with the higher total will be seeded higher or advanced forward.
  4. If seeding (only) is to be determined, a random draw or a coin flip will be used to resolve the tie.
  5. If advancement is in question, a play-off will be used to resolve the tie. Three unused toss-up questions would be asked; if after these three questions have been asked, the teams are still tied, the play-off would become sudden-death. Questions will be asked until the tie is broken and advancement is determined.
  6. Play-off procedure to be used only if a tie has caused more than 4 teams to still be eligible for advancement. A three-way tie for third or fourth place advancement would be determined by a three question round robin with each of the three teams. The winner would be the team(s) with the highest total number of questions answered correctly. This procedure would be repeated if the three-way tie still exists. If, after determining which two teams advance in a three-way tie, the two qualifying teams are still tied, a coin toss shall determine 3rd and 4th place seeding. If a three-way tie for 1st or 2nd place exists, then simply a coin toss would be done to determine seeding.

Post Re: 2015 MSHSAA Sectionals/State
The changes from last season are listed here.

D.5, as well as the words "or a coin flip" in L.3.d are new this year, but were already present in the copy I downloaded in September.

L.3.b and .c regarding common opponents are new in this version.

It's straightforward for two way ties:
a. If the teams are on opposite sides of the schedule and played each other, use head to head.
b/c. If the teams are on the same side (left/right) of the schedule, they've played 2 common opponents. (It looks like this happened twice last year: New Franklin and Mound City were tied at 2-1, 850 pts, and Savannah and Hallsville were both tied at 3-0, 1460 pts., and my understanding is a coin flip under the rule now numbered L.3.d was used to seed the teams since this rule didn't exist.)
d/e. If the teams are on opposite sides of the schedule and didn't play each other, there are no common opponents.

I'm trying to comprehend how the common opponent determination works for a 3+ way tie with the way these schedules are set up. A three way tie is simple if all teams are on one side since they will all have one common opponent (the team that the fourth team on that side didn't play). It's not clear how it can work when there are teams from both sides of the schedule.

Theoretically, suppose that in the above Class 1 schedule, Bismarck, Appleton City, and DeKalb are tied.
- Bismarck has played: Princeton, DeKalb, and Green City
- Appleton City has played: Green City, New Franklin, and Princeton
- DeKalb has played: Tuscumbia, Bismarck, and Thomas Jefferson

Bismarck and Appleton City have 2 common opponents, and Bismarck and DeKalb have a head-to-head result, but I don't see how you can compare DeKalb and Appleton City since they had no common opponents nor a head-to-head result.

I also don't see how a four or more way tie could be broken with common opponents since each team only played 3 games.

Granted, points are already used as the first tiebreaker, so a three or more way tie reaching L.3 isn't likely, but if it did happen, it seems likely that the fair definition of "common opponents" could be that there are none, and the tie will have to be broken by some form of D, E, or F.

I thought L.3.b&c were brand new additions, considering the genius scheduling where four teams could end up 3-0.

Correct.
Jeffrey Hill wrote:

In the case where four teams go 3-0, the common opponents rule doesn't even help if they all have the same number of points since it is impossible for there to be a common opponent that all four played.

Have a deck of cards ready for that scenario, because it'd have to go to that.

Also, it seems that whoever decided on this new tiebreaker language decided that bonus conversion isn't as important? In the event the combined score is the same then it comes down to tossups? Probably easier to count tally marks in the middle of the scoresheet, but it has me wondering why else this was picked instead of bonus conversion.

I've added room assignments to Jeff's initial state schedule. These are from each of the class bracket pages, linked in the original post. All games are in Memorial Union, on Hitt Street on the University of Missouri campus. (For those attending, please be mindful of campus tradition and remain silent as you pass through the archway.)

Looks like both the Class 1 and Class 2 defending champions fell short by 20 points this year. Congratulations to state champions Tuscumbia for their 320-300 win over Thomas Jefferson, and Saxony Lutheran for their 350-330 win over Richland!

In Class 1, Princeton took third place with a 270-180 win over Green City, and in Class 2, Monroe City took third with a 330-160 win over Gainesville.

Congratulations to all of these teams for advancing to the state playoff rounds and finishing in the top 4!

Class 3

Semifinals:
Hallsville 650, Notre Dame 100
Savannah 390, Orchard Farm 390 (Savannah wins tiebreaker 3-0)

Championship Game is a rematch of last year's game that was decided in overtime

Class 4

Semifinals:
St. Joseph Central 410, Hickman 350
Clayton 410, Marquette 350

Both St. Joseph Central and Clayton are making their first championship game appearances! If my table reading skills are good, this is the first time that has happened in any class since Cape Central and Parkway Central met in the 2002 Class 4 final.

Whoops, thanks for catching that! I'm busy working on other stuff and I just saw "Central (S..." My apologies to St. Joseph Central for the mixup.

Are tossup totals available for the playoff rounds, to compare to overall totals from previous years?

Jeff, to answer your question - yes. I have a spreadsheet of all the individual statistics.

This year, MACA also decided to award medals ("All-Star") to the top 4 individuals in each class based on the whole day, in addition to the All-State medals based on prelims only. [In order to get an All-Star, the player must have played all 5 games.] The list of those All-Star award winners is below:

Class 1 All-Stars:
1. Ross Sparrow, Tuscumbia, 20.6
T2. Noah Dickinson, Thomas Jefferson, 10.00
T2. Christian Atteberry, Thomas Jefferson, 10.00
T4. Cameron Albrecht, Green City, 8.0
T4. Noah Wells, Thomas Jefferson, 8.0

Class 2 All-Stars:
1. Josh Vogel, Saxony Lutheran, 17.6
2. Trent Homan, Richland, 14.6
3. Thomas Poiter, Gainesville, 9.2
4. Tim McKeone, Monroe City, 7.6

Class 3 All-Stars:
1. Jared Lockwood, Hallsville, 17.6
2. Evan Heronemus, Savannah, 15.0
3. Tyler Woosencraft, Orchard Farm, 9.2
4. Josh Null, Hallsville, 9.0

Class 4 All-Stars:
1. Omkar Venkatesh, Clayton, 14.4
2. William Gentry, Central St Joseph, 13.4
3. Alex Harmata, Hickman, 12.2
4. Mason Smith, Marquette, 9.4
