Tuscumbia Spring Elementary Academic Competition - 5/2/15

Post by Jason Loy »

Hello all,

I am pleased to announce that Tuscumbia High School will be hosting an elementary academic tournament on May 2, 2015. For the first time, we will have separate divisions for 5th/6th grades and 3rd/4th grades. As we have done in the past, the 5th/6th grade division will use a modified version of NAQT's MS-14 question set. Each game in the 5th/6th grade division will consist of 16 tossups followed by up to 16 three-part, 30 point rebounding bonuses. We will be writing our own 3rd/4th grade set, an effort headed by Tuscumbia's middle school quiz bowl team and edited by myself. We are as of yet undecided if the 3rd/4th grade set will consist solely of 20 tossup games or if one-part, rebounding bonuses will be used. We are leaning towards a tossup-only set so as to make the rules as simple as possible for students who are almost certainly brand new to quiz bowl of any kind, and also to lower the bar of entry for new moderators and scorekeepers. The 3rd/4th grade division schedule will also feature more frequent breaks as well as shorter games, the details of which will be worked out soon.

Since we anticipate that most schools will bring multiple teams, we encourage you to bring as many buzzer systems as possible.

We ask that you limit teams to eight students each, with up to six being able to play in each game.

As of now, the field cap for the 5th/6th grade division will be 18 teams, while the 3rd/4th division will be capped at 12. Our facilities can accommodate a maximum of 36 teams, so any field expansion will be balanced with that in mind.

Entry fees are as follows:

First team from each school: $55
Second and subsequent teams: $50 each
Buzzer discount: $5 per working set (no limit)

Please email me at jloy@tuscumbialions.k12.mo.us with the number of teams and buzzer systems you plan to bring.

I'm going to hold off on taking new registrations for now in the 5th/6th division to give Holden the time to verify their attendance. We will consider field expansion/realignment if more registrations come in.

Edit: We're three teams away from filling the 5th/6th grade field. Keep the registrations coming!

Due to Tuscumbia being the only school in the 3rd/4th grade division, it has been condensed into the fifth/sixth grade field. The field is now closed.
