On behalf of Coach Kathy Brandon and the Moberly High School Scholar Bowl team, I am pleased to invite all Missouri teams to the inaugural Outstate Missouri Academic Rendezvous (OMAR), which is set for March 21st, 2015 at Moberly High School. This tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in a modified NAQT/national format:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each, with an additional five-point “power” awarded for a correct answer given before a pre-determined point in the tossup.
  • Unlike other NAQT/national tournaments, we will NOT assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer.
  • Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. Incorrect bonus parts shall immediately rebound.
  • MSHSAA timing rules shall apply with the following exceptions:
    • Teams shall receive only five seconds to answer a bonus. Moderators will be instructed to prompt after four seconds.
    • Math calculation tossups and bonus shall receive ten seconds instead of 15.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 60-second and one-30 second timeout per game. Teams may substitute at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. However, coaches may not confer with their players during a 30-second timeout.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players. Rosters shall be submitted at registration the morning of the tournament, and players may not change teams during the tournament.
NAQT (the provider of the questions for the MSHSAA district and state tournaments) has assigned us the question set 145A. Teams that finish in the top 15 percent can qualify for NAQT’s High School National Championship Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois on May 29-31. Also, teams in the top 15 percent which meet NAQT's definition of a small school can qualify for NAQT's Small School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia April 25-26. (Edit: Please see clarifying posts below.) As we are hoping to include teams that rarely attend NAQT-style tournaments, we will limit participation to players that have never competed at a national tournament. (HSNCT, SSNCT or PACE.)

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the coaches meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m. We are currently limiting the field to 18 teams. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • First team: $60
  • Additional teams: $55
  • Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 (maximum $10)
  • Discount for providing competent staff: $5 per staffer (maximum $10)
Moberly High School is located at 1625 Gratz Brown Road, best accessed by taking Highway 63 to the Route M (Middle Grove) exit, then turning west into town about a half mile before turning right onto Gratz Brown Road. The high school will be on your left. Most lunch options will be on North Morley/Business 63.

In addition to myself, Coach Brandon will also serve as tournament director. We have also asked for additional support from members of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/OMAR2015Registration and fill out the online form. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Kathy Brandon at kbrandon@moberly.k12.mo.us or Kyle Hill at either kyle@hillonline.net or kyleh@digity.me. Please include “OMAR 2015” in the subject line.

I look forward to seeing you at Moberly High School on March 21st.

For clarity: the qualifiers for SSNCT are the top 15 percent of the small schools (not the overall field). This means that the highest-finishing small school always qualifies to go to Atlanta.

Technically, both are correct, right? Small school eligible teams in the top 15 percent of the overall field qualify for both HSNCT and SSNCT (qualification method #4), and the top 15% of small school eligible teams qualify for SSNCT no matter where they place in the overall field (qualification method #1).

With 17 teams confirmed and an 18th expressing strong interest in registering, we are now wait-listing future registrations. If we're able to secure enough staff, an expansion of the field will be considered.

We have our 18 teams! Of course, we will happily accept additional teams on our waitlist, should openings occur in the next three weeks.

One team has dropped, meaning we have room for an 18th team.

With recent drops, it's looking like we'll have 12 teams this weekend. If the field holds, it should make for a straightforward tournament.

12 teams are currently competing. After Boonville dropped, Montgomery County offered to split their squad. Not only does this result in a dozen teams, but also seven small school teams in the field resulting in two bids for next month's SSNCT.

At the time of this post we are about to wrap up round three of a five-round preliminary. Top three from each pool will advance to the playoff pool for three more games, bottom three will be in the consolation pool. I will attempt to post further updates when I can.

The championship pool consists of Hannibal, Hallsville, Fort Osage A, Montgomery County A, Monroe City and Smith-Cotton.

The consolation pool consists of Fort Osage B, Montgomery County B, Pilot Grove and Moberly. Harrisburg and Higbee finished last in their respective pools and elected to not return for the afternoon.

Championship pools are entering the last round.
Hallsville and Hannibal are 4-0 and will begin a best-of-three, with game two beginning the advantaged final portion of the tournament.
Montgomery County A and Monroe City A are 0-4, with the winner of their upcoming game determining the second bid for SSNCT.
Fort Osage A and Smith-Cotton are 2-2, with their upcoming game determining third place.

Hannibal defeated Hallsville in both games to claim the championship. Smith-Cotton beat Fort Osage A for 3rd. Monroe City defeated Montgomery County A for 5th place and the second SSNCT bid, if our math is correct for how many bids should be available.

I extend special thanks to our tournament help today: moderators Stephanie Hull, Jeffrey Hill, Scott Allen, Tara Winn, Bob Brandon and Holly Wooldridge from Westran; scorekeepers Amy Smith, Jeremy Smith, Isabella & Karsyn from Pilot Grove, and Emily Mullen. I also want to express my extreme gratitude to coach Kathy Brandon, principal Aaron Vitt, activities director Kenny Seifert and the administration of Moberly Schools for allowing us to put together this tournament and expand playing opportunities for teams across Northern Missouri. Reception was positive, and if all went as well as I think it did for an inaugural tournament, I anticipate a 2016 iteration of OMAR.
