Missouri Fall Academic Tournament (10/22/2011)
Hello Coaches,
The University of Missouri Quizbowl Club is pleased to announce that we are planning on hosting our fourth annual Missouri Fall Academic Tournament on October 22th, 2011. This is the first varsity invitational tournament of the year, and we hope you will consider our event as a season kickoff for your team. In our past three years, thanks to our central location that allows for most teams from around the state to make the day trip to Columbia, we have had the incredible fortune to be able to attract many of the very best teams in the state from both major cities and all places in between, so we hope to be able to offer you another chance to play many of this year’s most competitive teams.
We will be using an Invitational Series set written by National Academic Quiz Tournaments, and we will use the same game format as last year (20 tossups with 30 point rebounding bonuses, and tossups will have -5 point penalties for an early buzz that is incorrect, and powers, or an extra 5 points for a correct early buzz). These are the same style of questions that NAQT will be using in the MSHSAA State Championship.
We will be giving out trophies to the top 3 teams, and if we have a large enough field of small schools, we will also give out an award to the top placing small school team. We will be using NAQT's definition of a small school, which is any non-selective public school with 500 or fewer students in grades 10-12.
Our tournament has been certified by the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, a statewide group promoting high quality quizbowl. Criteria for certification include pyramidal questions, a guarantee of six rounds minimum per team, and other factors that MOQBA considers valuable for high quality quizbowl. Details on MOQBA and its certification procedures can be found online at moqba.org.
This tournament will be using a rule where each team can have a maximum of 6 players. If you have more than that, do not feel hesitant signing up an extra team so that every player gets more opportunities to participate in games.
The field will be capped at 18 teams, although if there is demand and space we will consider expansion of the field. Spaces will be allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will form a waitlist, and if teams drop, we will proceed down the list in order. If the field fills, then we will be able to guarantee you a 10 game schedule, which we are very excited to offer your team to allow them to get increased early season playing time. Also, if we fill the field, then the top 3 teams and possibly the top small school will qualify for the 2012 NAQT High School National Championship. Additionally, the top teams will qualify for the 2012 PACE National Scholastics Championship.
Entry Fees
First team from a school: $70
Additional teams from the same school: $60
Buzzer system discount*: -$5 per system per team, up to $15 off.
Staffer discount: -$5 per team that brings a scorekeeper the morning of the tournament. This can be a coach, parent, or any other person attending who isn’t playing. We will provide the scorekeeper with a lunch.
* In order to receive the buzzer system discount, the system must be fully functional for 8 players.
To register, please email me at mizzouquizbowl@gmail.com with the name of your school, how many teams you wish to enter, and the best way to contact you with any questions.
Don't hesitate to respond early! We will work with you every step of the way, allay your concerns, and answer any questions you may have.
Also, be sure to look out for our other tournaments on December 3rd, and on February 11th. Our campus will also be hosting the Missouri NAQT Qualifier tournament on March 5th. We also recommend you look into attending other MOQBA events, which can be found on our website at http://moqba.org/calendar/.
We hope to see you in Columbia on October 22th to kick off the new quizbowl season!

If I can get up there (Friday night football means I'm stuck at the station until 10), I'd love to help where needed.

The field is already (edit: over!) half full and I don't even see some of the usual suspects like NKC, Ladue, Rock Bridge, Clayton, Parkway West, etc. so you all should sign up quick if you want to guarantee your spot! Also, we've gotten an out of state team!

That's definitely interesting, given the state of Kansas at the moment.

We only have 2 spots left. This is a wildly fast filling field.

I'm expanding the field to 21 teams. We already are at 19. This is going to be an awesome tournament.

This expands the number of teams that qualify to HSNCT to 4, right?

Re: Missouri Fall Academic Tournament (10/22/2011)
Yes. It will also make the minimum number of teams that get bids to the PACE NSC go up from 2 to 4, (and that will increase if we get gold or platinum certification).

Re: Missouri Fall Academic Tournament (10/22/2011)
The new field size is full with 2 Clayton teams signing up. We will certainly be looking to expand once we get a chance to figure out how many staff we can draw, but we need to wait until the MU quizbowl team starts meeting to do that. In the meantime, teams should still sign up to fill out our waitlist, because we always have some drops and could potentially let your team in if we expand.

Excitingly, I think we have enough staff now that we can safely expand the field to 24 teams.

I must say, it is VERY nice to see Dixon, Hallsville, Richland and Tuscumbia in the field. One of my personal goals is to get more small schools involved with MOQBA events, and I think Mizzou is in a particularly good location to do this. I highly encourage all schools, no matter the size, to attend events in your area. You have a bonus chance to earn a trip to nationals with the small school titles, so take advantage of it. We'd love to see more!

Just so nobody thinks Centralia is fading away, 10/22 is my wife's birthday, and, strangely enough, a day at Quiz Bowl wasn't her ideal gift. I tried to find another staff member to escort my team, but to no avail. We'll see you all in the Spring, if not sooner.

We have the staff to safely expand to 28 teams. I think it is very likely we will go up to 32 in the near future, but for now we for sure are secure at 28.

This is the first event in Missouri that will be receiving platinum certification from PACE. The top 25% of teams will be awarded bids to PACE Nationals.

Re: Missouri Fall Academic Tournament (10/22/2011)
Congratulations to Ladue! Their program put on quite a dominating performance to start off the year, having their 3-man A-team go undefeated through 13 rounds to win their 3rd consecutive title at the Missouri Fall Academic Tournament. Their B team placed 2nd, losing only to their A-team twice, Rock Bridge A placed 3rd after losing a tiebreaker tossup to Ladue B, and Parkway West A placed 4th. Teams that did not make the superplayoff rounds but rounded out the playoffs were Ladue C and Liberty, who tied for 5th and got bids to NAQT Nationals, and North Kansas City and Clayton A. All playoff teams got platinum bids to PACE Nationals! Pilot Grove was awarded the small school title, which meant they also are awarded a bid to NAQT nationals.
I want to thank the staff that came out and made this event possible. Especially big thanks go out to Jeff Hill, who did all kinds of help wherever he was needed, and also to Tuscumbia and Parkway West for providing staff. As usual, the local college teams from Wash U, Rolla, and Truman State, along with assorted independent staffers are also huge helps and I can't thank them enough. I am really happy with how well this event went, especially because I am so happy we made a lot of improvements on Tiger Bowl, our last attempt to run an event this size (that one was even smaller). I again want to thank all the teams that made this event a success, and look forward to seeing everybody at future MU events.

Re: Missouri Fall Academic Tournament (10/22/2011)
To follow up on what Charlie said, I was impressed by Ladue's performance as well as that of all the other teams! Scores were impressive and I was glad to see some relatively new and smaller teams making a statement today! I personally look forward to seeing everyone improve during the season; working with high school quizbowl teams is a humbling experience and showcases the best of what Missouri has to offer.
I'd also like to echo his sentiments about the staff. I'd usually be helping him TD, but unfortunately we were forced to schedule this event on a home game day (or not run it at all), and I am also a section leader in Marching Mizzou, forcing me to be at the game and all associated rehearsals. While I was able to make it to MFAT at the end and even moderate the superplayoffs and finals (while still wearing my marching band shoes, hat, and shirt!), the event couldn't have run at all without the volunteers who made it happen all morning and afternoon. Personally, I want to give a shout out to my friend, roommate, and successor as president of the club, Jacob Billingsley, who graciously helped me to coordinate things from home and transport all our supplies this morning, since I had to leave quite early. Everyone else deserves just as much praise for their contributions - honestly, every little thing that a tournament coordinator can entrust his or her staffers to take care of is a huge load off the TD's shoulders. To anyone today who helped set up or break down buzzers, carry boxes from room to room, keep track of win-loss records on the chalkboard, and keep scoresheets and packets organized: THANK YOU.

For 2 years in a row now MFAT has seen a big jump in scoring. Kudos to all these teams putting in the work to get better and to MOQBA for continuing to improve the state of Missouri quizbowl.

Thanks for running yet another incredible tournament!
Just a small note on individual stats; I had 8/9/1 in the 3rd round against Raytown, not 8/8/-5 like it says on the stats.

This has been fixed (your stat line matches up with the bonus possible values entered so it was easy to verify without the scoresheet). I also fixed incorrect tossup heard entries. (Note: I only entered about half of round 10 and later, and don't have the scoresheets.)

Is it just me, or did Rock Bridge A get 420 points in their seventh game while only answering 5 tossups?

Re: Missouri Fall Academic Tournament (10/22/2011)
Yeah, something's definitely wrong there... the picture of the chalkboard grid I have shows a score of 500 for Rock Bridge in round 7. 420 bonus points possible implies they got 14 tossups; adding 90 points would put them at 510 points. I would need to see the scoresheet to figure out what was entered wrong.WilliamofOrange wrote:Is it just me, or did Rock Bridge A get 420 points in their seventh game while only answering 5 tossups?

I'm pretty sure I had 4/7/2 in the game against Tuscumbia B, not 4/5/2, according to my notebook and the fact that the number of bonus parts heard (42) does not compute if Ladue B only had 12 tossups.
Edit: In addition, one of my tossups in the game against Rock Bridge A should have gone to David A.
