2012 NSC: June 9-10, 2012, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri
August 29th, 2011 in PACE News

PACE is pleased to announce that the 2012 National Scholastics Championship (NSC) will be held at Washington University in St. Louis on the weekend of June 9th to June 10th in partnership with the Washington University Academic Team. Washington University is easily accessible from the St. Louis airport via public transportation, and is able to provide a large number of classrooms in two buildings in close proximity to each other.

The tournament will be directed by the PACE VP of Tournament Direction, Matt Weiner. Matt has extensive experience directing high school and college quizbowl tournaments, including previous iterations of the NSC. Matt and the rest of the PACE organization will be taking several steps to rectify the logistical issues at previous iterations of the NSC, particularly the major issues of the 2011 NSC. Matt will be making a follow-up post shortly that outlines the steps he plans to take to ensure that this year’s NSC will run with the efficiency and fairness you expect from a premier high school quizbowl national championship.

Like previous NSCs, the question set will be produced in-house by PACE. Chris Ray will be serving as the head editor of the set this year. Chris served in the same role for the 2010 NSC and has edited numerous high school and college tournaments. The distribution will be largely similar to last year, although the final details are still being worked out.

Note that unlike in previous years, there will be a two week gap between the NAQT HSCNT and the PACE NSC. The tournament will still take place over two days. Teams are advised not to book flights prior to at least 7 PM on Sunday if they wish to attend the finals, awards and all-star game.

We are initially limiting the field size to 48 teams. However, we will be reevaluating the field size in late January or early February. If there is sufficient demand, we will increase the field size by up to 16 teams, for a maximum possible number of teams of 64. It’s also possible that the field size may be increased by a smaller amount, such as 8 teams. The list of affiliated tournaments, qualified teams and registered teams can be found linked from the homepage of this site.

The tournament will be conducted with the same general format as last year. Namely, games will continue to consist of 20 tossups and up to 20 bonuses, with missed bonus parts bouncing back to the other team. PACE will be posting an update to the rules in order to better handle protest resolutions with bounced back bonuses. We will also be keeping the All-Star game, which will be played on academic questions, although there will be some small changes to the all-star team composition. PACE would like to thank the players and coaches who provided valuable feedback on the issue of bonus bounce backs and the format of the All-Star game.

The fee structure for this tournament will be the same as last year. Please see this page for details on last year’s fee structure.

Registration dates will also be the same as last year. Please see the Tournament Affiliation Guide for a breakdown of when teams are able to register. We will be announcing the specific steps necessary to register your team in the coming months.

PACE will be posting additional details regarding schedules, transportation, hotels, how to get the campus, food options, etc. as the date of the tournament gets closer.

If you have any questions about the NSC or PACE in general, please e-mail PACE’s Vice President of Communication, Sarah Angelo, at sangelo147@gmail.com.

We look forward to welcoming teams, coaches, and parents to the 2012 NSC in St. Louis.
