Post Truman High School sKnowbowl 2010
Just got this from Mr. Tarvin via group email for the Truman scholar bowl alumni, so I am just passing it on to you all.

"Hey everyone. I just wanted to remind you all that sKnowbowl is January 9, 2010 and I will need moderators, as always. Right now we are at 24 V and 24 JV, and we will probably expand to 28 each. Also, we are expanding to 6, slightly shorter rounds, so a few change-ups. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. -Mr. Tarvin "

Heard today that the tournament is now up to 32 varsity and 32 JV teams. SO...a lot of teams are showing up to play. If anyone wants to read questions please let me know and I can relay that info to Tarvin. This size of a tournament I would imagine needs a lot of help!

Do you happen to have a full list of teams? I know we'll be there, even though we will be missing a lot of people.

I do not have the full 32 team list. I do know that Park Hill South will not attend but usually most schools with a team in the KC area attend this tournament. I talked to my ex-coach about a week ago and there are a few teams from around Joplin who are attending as well, I think Webb City and Thomas Jefferson. I also think Helias out of Jeff City will be attending as well...last year both Rock Bridge and Hickman from Columbia came.

Long story short: expect most Kansas City teams (including Truman's) to be playing, as well as a few from other places from around the state.

Got this today from Mr. Tarvin in an email to all former Truman High School Scholar Bowl team members

Hello everyone,

Much to my chagrin and yours, sKnowbowl, for the 2nd time in current memory, is going to be postponed to an undetermined date. We received a call from the superintendent that all operations involving students are shut down for the rest of the week, so we will not be able to have everything together and get teams here for the tournament this Saturday, Jan. 9. The tournament will be rescheduled at a later date, so any of you who are local and can help, it would very much be appreciated.

Any questions, just e-mail or call me.

Thanks,

Lynn Tarvin

This is tomorrow so I figured I'd bring it to the top, and I'd also like to know if the field is still as large as it was before it was postponed?

This is my first run in with QG, and they were the worst questions I've ever played on, including the one liners we played in Middle School. There was a translation worksheet, as awful as that is, where most of the answers they provided were technically wrong, we spent about 5 minutes going through all the challenges associated with it. I'm going to stop myself before I go on a long rant, but really? The translation worksheet was like they ran it through babelfish and didn't check at all, and that's not including the fact that the use of translation questions in scholar bowl is preposterous. I thought the questions we had at quads this year were bad (which apparently aren't QG) were bad, but this was ridiculous, in our games there were at least 5 challenges because the writer put the wrong answer, or simply ignored the fact that a question might have multiple answers, and that's not even including the language worksheet. Also, we had an ENTIRE WORKSHEET of Medical TV Drama questions, seriously, what on earth would inspire you to even allow the outrageous spot that TV drama has ANY place in Scholar Bowl, yet alone decide to write a whole worksheet about it. The best I heard anyone say they got on this worksheet is 6/20 by NKC, and they almost lost a game because a worksheet did not ask for full names on the worksheet, but the moderator's instructions were to only accept full names. Luckily our moderator decided that this was ridiculous and decided to accept partial names. Well I could go on more, but I'd better stop. Why on earth does Missouri accept their bids?

I'd like to point out this was the first time Truman did not play in their own tournament on either the varsity or JV level.

I read questions today (3 rounds of varsity, 3 rounds of JV) so I have some idea of how the questions were.

The medical TV worksheet was QG, I remember going over them in my round. The varsity questions were QG, I know that for a fact. The JV questions were written in house by Truman's varsity team during practice.

As for the work sheet where NKC almost lost due to the names or something... I remember it stating that the reader could only award points for FULL NAME. The was the round right before lunch if I remember right. That was not a problem in my room, sorry it was for NKC but it sounds like they won anyway so it's not a big deal

for anyone who would like to know, I did right down the list of teams, not in ABC order but the listing is in the order of who played who in the first round of the varsity level. JV teams are the same as far as I know. No team did not not send a JV team. Marshall had the only B team playing in varsity

Marshall
Platte County
Smithville
Lee's Summit West
Hickman-Columbia
Lone Jack
Staley
St. Mary's
Park Hill
Lee's Summit North
Van Horn (first ever scholar bowl tournament for school)
Oak Park
Barstow
NKC
Lee's Summit
Marshall B
Mound City
Oak Grove
William Chrisman
Team X

Dakota, I'm sure i saw excelsior springs there, did they possibly bring only JV? And I thought Marshall brought 2 JV not varsity, I remember seeing a Marshall B on the JV bracket? The problem with the names was that it was not noted on the worksheet that only full names would be accepted, if it would have simply said that on the Worksheet there would have been no problem. That also explains why the JV didn't have a problem with their questions, and it is probably good that they get better questions because they need good practice, and I understand the use of QG here, and I have no problem with the way the tournament itself was run other than that some teams played each other twice, which is simply a sacrifice for fair schedules over round robin. My biggest issue is QG, and as I said this is my first experience with them, as I was spoiled my JV year with all NAQT tourneys. Do you happen to know why quads decided not to use NAQT this year by the way?

It's possible, I just quickly entered the varsity teams into my phone so I might have missed some. I only looked at the varsity teams too so I'm not sure.

I know the reason why Truman went with QG. Truman's coach always uses the state provider for questions at the varsity level. Always have. As for why quads used something different, again I'm not sure. I know they have different providers every year. They used NAQT for conference as well.

I think it went well, one of the better run sKnowbowl tournaments then in the past. I'm not sure what teams placed where though so if you know, that would be great :)

We left in a hurry because of weather, so I don't know who placed where, just that we went 3-2 and didn't rank that high.

If I were a betting man... I'd say NKC won. LSN and Columbia Hickman are great schools too so I would say they rounded out the top 3. But, like y'all I left quickly after the last round due to the weather.

This is not true in the least.
